New contract for Alex Smith?

I'm one of those fans who think Kaepernick will be good someday. I watched a few of his Nevada games and he was phenomenal. But... I do think that holding on to Alex Smith for another 2-3 years is the smart plan. Having a high ceiling is great and potential is awesome, but we now know that a 49er team with Alex Smith taking snaps at QB can win the division and take a number 2 seed into the playoffs.

As for the figures being thrown around, no contracts talks have happened yet. They already said they won't handle it until after the season. Fitz got his in the beginning of a season that he started hot and look what happened... If the Bills had waited until the end of the season they might not have overpaid.

Right now, I dont want to go off potential. I hope Kaep is good, that's why they drafted him but at this point, he needs to sit and Smith is doing well. 2 or 3 years for Smith is fine imo. Then Kaep can get his shot but unless we get him some more targets and change up the offense and open it up more, I dont see how he'll be that much better than Smith when he finally gets his chance.

First of all I never said SF was "old" I said they weren't getting any younger and although they are clearly the best team in the division this season, Seattle and Arizona aren't that far off and St. Louis could be due for a quick turnaround as well if they hire a competent head coach this off-season.

Obviously bringing him in would be contingent upon his neck being healthy but you could always franchise or transition tag Smith until you were confident enough to bring in Manning.

As far as him not "fitting your style of play" I've now seen Jim Harbaugh's offense work under Josh Johnson, Andrew Luck and most recently Alex Smith... I'm pretty sure he could find a way to make one of the most prolific passers of all-time "fit".

And LOL @ Manning's cap number being the reason the Colts collapsed. Go look at the past 5 or 6 Colts drafts (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indianapolis_Colts_draft_history) and tell me just how many impact players we're looking at there. Throw in the fact that Manning actually made Wayne and Clark look better than they actually were (as evidenced by their play this season) and those picks don't look too great either.

Hell, without Manning putting up big leads year after year we were all able to see just how one-dimensional Freeney was when he had to do something other than just pin his ears back and come after the passer.

Tom Brady was making a shitload of money when he went down, and New England still won 11 games. It was the Polians shitty construction of this roster and total reliance on Manning to make everyone around him better that led to such an epic collapse. Not Peyton Manning's cap number.

Well if you're not calling a team old then saying "they aren't getting any younger" is redundant because everyone ages. Seattle is the team in the division that I see following the 49ers heels the most out of those three. STL has more problems than just a head coach as I'm sure their fans on this site can tell you.

That's right. I can just imagine Indy asking for the minimum of a king's ransom and I don't think that San Francisco's QB need is extreme enough for a move like that. Of course Peyton Manning would be an insane upgrade over Smith, but I fear the cost. Especially considering that this team doesn't seem to be being held back by the current QB. I am confident that they are still growing and Justin Smith's contract will be up after this season. There is a definite possibility for significant differences between this year's 13-3 team and whichever team shows up next September.

It wasn't me that brought up concerns about Peyton Manning's ability to be success in a 49ers jersey. If you read one of my earlier posts in the thread you'll notice that he's the only option I pointed to as a logical and attainable upgrade.

I didn't say his contract was the reason why the Colts are terrible without him. I suggested that it might (and I do think it is) one of many contributing factors.

So again, he doesn't fit. He probably can learn and master it but he still isn't in the mold of what JH wants. He prefers more athletic QBs. Again, if we got Manning I wouldn't be upset but it would have to be for the right price and deal. Of course Peyton Manning's cap hit is over twice the highest paid player on the 49ers roster...the Niners don't have a QB. You say that Manning's contract is 3 times the amount of Smith's...so? Would you trade three mediocre Alex Smith's for one Peyton Manning? Every GM in the NFL would.

And, you are assuming 1) that Alex Smith is a talented player, and 2) that you would be able to obtain two more talented players, as if its as simple as "spend the money, get the production".

The final irony of all this is that Alex Smith's rookie contract was a huge albatross on the Niners organization. They were paying a big contract to Smith and getting zero production. My point is that while the Colts were paying Manning top dollar, they were getting top production. THAT wasn't/isn't the reason for the Colts' woes.

The "he should play better in his second year in the system" has proven to not be true all the time. I can totally see a dip in Alex Smith's play given his inconsistencies in the past.

The biggest inconsistency in SF has been at Offensive Coordinator. Last year was the first time Smith had an OC make it into year two. The OC then got fired within 4 weeks of the 2nd season.
