New York Knicks 2010 Free Agent Watch

Who says LeBron and Wade are even leaving?

If Cleveland wins the championship, I don't think there is much of a chance LeBron leaves.

If Miami signs Chris Bosh, I don't think Wade will leave.

You're acting like ALL these players care about is Money. LeBron gets the money regardless where he goes, he wants the championship and the legacy. Same with Wade. The two are so insanely rich, max contracts don't really matter.

Also, you do realize Miami has their entire team expiring minus a player or two this year correct? IIRC, Miami is going to have the most spending money this offseason and will be able to offer Wade a max and bring in other players.

If Kahn gets Wall... I don't know. Turner would play great with Flynn.

But, if Flynn goes, Rubio comes to Minny. Kahn basically has the choice on who he wants to keep. Rubio has more value, though.

woah woah woah! RED FLAG! Flynn is not holding Rubio back. NOT AT ALL! Until you find a good source to have said that lately I'm not buying it. He wanted to play with Jonny and vice-versa. If we get Wall, Flynn is gone automatically. That's the only way Flynn leaves at least until Rubio comes over, however, Flynn has a great shot at still playing. You need to touch up on your Wolves info.

When did I say it's the money? It's the amount the team has under the cap to get more max's. The most you can offer someone is 16.5, so the money isn't a factor. LeBron/Wade + Bosh/Amar'e>>>>>

Yeah, that's what I'm saying. I never said it's about the money. Agrott is talking to a wall, I guess.

The only reason you have given from LeBron going to NY is because they can offer a max contract. Why would he go from such a good of a team as Clevelands, to such a shitter like New Yorks? If anything, LeBron goes to a team that is a Championship contender NOW, not after a few years.

PG: Flynn/Sergio/Dyson
SG: T-Mac/House/Dyson
SF: LeBron/Landry/Singler
PF: Gallinari/Dorsey/Singler
C: Bosh/Camby/Dorsey

I'm pretty much sold that this is the team we will have. Flynn is the only one I'm not sure about, but we will have a new PG, unless Toney/Sergio step up.

Draft:
Kyle Singler and John Scheyer

Trade:
Jonny Flynn for Wilson Chandler and Toney Douglas

Sign:
LeBron/Bosh to max's, Camby to a 2 year 6 million deal, T-Mac to a vet minimum, Joey Dorsey to LLE, and renounce Bill Walker and Sergio Rodriguez.

Buyout:
Eddy McCurry

Seriously, first you say they'll not only draft Kyle Singler in the first round, but also draft Scheyer. Then you say Minnesota will give up Johnny Flynn for Chandler and Toney Douglas. Two glorified bench players AT MOST. Are you fucking kidding?

You're just as bad as the BUCK3YE5 faggot. Your argument is invalid.

We have been teased. As NBA fans, we were told we would get to see Ricky Rubio, one of the most exciting players on the planet, evolve into greatness before our eyes. Now plenty of people are suggesting -- insiders around Rubio, the GM of the team that drafted him, the father of the player himself -- Rubio may be headed back to Europe for a year or two.

If he wanted to play with Flynn he'd be in Europe. Rubio isn't coming over to split time at PG.
All this just two days after Rubio stared into the camera and said he wanted to come to the NBA so badly he'd play for free.

Now, instead of elite basketball, we get to watch elite poker. Bluffs, counterbluffs and gamesmanship -- perhaps, as sources suggest, with all parties: Rubio, his agent, and the Timberwolves working together to find a new NBA home for the young point guard.

David Kahn sent a letter to Timberwolves season ticket holders that included this:

With the sixth pick, we selected Jonny Flynn. I truly believe that Jonny is as much a scorer as a playmaker and will thrive playing off of Ricky. I also believe that, together, we will have one of the most dynamic defensive backcourts in the NBA over time. You will love Jonny Flynn. He, too, will be special.

And I also believe that there is a tendency in the NBA for all of us (myself included) to become too formulaic in our thinking. If you think of the Detroit Pistons backcourt during their championship run, with Isiah Thomas, Joe Dumars and Vinnie Johnson, or the Celtics with their backcourt of Danny Ainge and Dennis Johnson (and before Ainge there was Gerald Henderson), or the Lakers with Jerry West and Gail Goodrich, or the Knicks with Walt Frazier and Earl Monroe, there are many instances of championship success that is not so paint-by-the-numbers.

It can and will work.
I have talked to sources in several NBA front offices -- and elsewhere -- who are knowledgeable of the situation. Want to know how many of them buy Kahn's reasoning? None. Not one believes it even a little bit. Collectively, the executives rank the likelihood of a long-term Rubio and Flynn tandem at precisely zero.

This game has a lot more cards than may have been immediately apparent. Here's my attempt to frame the game in its current state:

Rubio's reluctance to go to Minnesota, all agree, probably has not all that much to do with the cold. Lots of NBA cities are cold, and Rubio would be unlikely to delay his dream because of an aversion to a city he has never visited. (Quick! Get him to visit before winter returns in September.)
There is an idea that had Minnesota traded up to draft him second, instead of fifth, he would have been much happier. Over four years, the difference in income between the second and fifth picks is around $5 million, which roughly approximates Rubio's buyout from DKV Joventut. Executives suggest the buyout is something of a red herring. The team that Ricky Rubio plays for in Spain does not sell a ton of tickets, does not have much of a fan base, and does not make a lot of money. Yet Rubio has global star power. That sets up a dynamic where everyone involved -- Ricky Rubio, his agent Dan Fegan, Nike, David Stern, the Spanish IRS that may or may not hold his contract now, even DKV Joventut himself -- is better off financially if Rubio comes to the NBA where he can realize his star value on and off the court. In the event Rubio can't get those other parties to pay some or all of his buyout, there are plenty of people willing to float him a loan for the difference.
Therefore, sources suggest that the reason Rubio is not pro-Minnesota is the presence of Flynn.
Now here's where things get interesting. The conventional wisdom is that teams won't bid high to a GM holding a player he has to move. But sources like Kahn's position for counterintuitive reasons. They suggest his cards aren't bad now, and could improve with time. Rubio would have more value if his buyout was finalized, for instance. Likewise if Rubio's wrist was proven wholly repaired, other teams might be readier with good offers. Even in the scenario where Rubio returns to Europe, he's at an age where he's almost certain to improve. An improved shooting ability, for instance, could set off a frenzy. Meanwhile, the list of suitors could evolve. Through injuries or trades, more teams might find they could use a young point guard, raising his value still further. And the worst-case scenario probably isn't so bad. If the best offers don't come in for Rubio, Kahn could always trade Flynn.
How's this for playing patient poker? Here's Kahn at a Friday press conference, asked about Rubio's father's comments about staying in Europe: "To the extent that if it means we have to wait a year, we wait a year. If it means two years, two years. He's 18. If we had to wait, god forbid, two years, he'd be 20 when he got here. That's pretty young. The last thing we need to do is become overwrought today. The way I look at it, this was a gift. I didn't see any plausible scenario this occur. When you also want to examine it from the standpoint of the Foye/Miller trade, we trade Randy and Mike in the last year of their contract for Ricky Rubio."
Kahn has an unusual asset: No coach. Kahn said in a press conference that "one thing I'll guarantee you: It won't be an easy ride. It'll be a bumpy ride." As Kahn fields offers from other teams for Rubio, he can convincingly tell them that if Rubio stays in Europe, it's no big deal to him. So the Wolves might lose a few more games. It'll help their long-term strategy. On any normal team, the person who would be irate when expressing a willingness to lose games would be the coach. But there is no coach to worry about. If he wants to, Kahn can make a strong case that what happens this coming year is of no real concern.
Several teams remain eager to employ Rubio, and Kahn has been frank that he has been fielding offers. Worth noting is that in Indiana, for years, Kahn worked very closely with ... current Knicks honcho Donnie Walsh. And the Knicks are one of the teams that is said to be most enamored with Rubio (although it's very hard to imagine what the Knicks could offer of equivalent value). The point: Minnesota fans know personal ties can play a role in big trades.
If anyone is to blame for the dilemma, how about the Kings' front office? The Kings need someone to distribute the ball. The Kings need perimeter players who play defense. The Kings need someone to sell tickets. The Kings had the fourth pick, and the sun. Yet they passed on Rubio. Much to Minnesota GM David Kahn's surprise, Rubio fell all the way to the fifth pick, where he was blatantly too talented to pass up. And of course, Minnesota also had the sixth pick, which means Kahn barely had any choice at all. If you're attempting to rebuild a franchise on the fly, you can't very well pass on Ricky freaking Rubio twice, and let him fall to seventh. What's the likelihood Rubio becomes an All-Star? 30 percent? 60 percent? Whatever the number is, that's about the same likelihood David Kahn would have become an NBA laughingstock if he hadn't take Rubio.
this guy srs?

IMO the Wolves would be stupid to draft Wall. Why not just draft a legit swingman instead? I know Wall is the most highly-touted prospect, but they need to let Flynn develop; he's gonna be a star.
I agree. Even if we win the lottery, I would want Turner over Wall.

30 percent? 60 percent? Whatever the number is, that's about the same likelihood David Kahn would have become an NBA laughingstock if he hadn't take Rubio.
hey dumbass. did i not say a recent article. The whole thing was because of his dad not wanting Ricky to come over yet. Now go find me a RECENT ARTICLE. From what I can tell your not a very intelligent NBA poster.
The only reason you have given from LeBron going to NY is because they can offer a max contract. Why would he go from such a good of a team as Clevelands, to such a shitter like New Yorks? If anything, LeBron goes to a team that is a Championship contender NOW, not after a few years.

Thanks, he is most definently terrible.

I skimmed over most of this but it seems you think the ONLY reason Rubio is not playing in the NBA is because of Flynn.

You do realize that if Rubio came over here, he'd probably have to live with a roommate or at the Stadium.. His contract with Spain was so big, it would have consumed his entire NBA contract. What he was planning on doing was hopefully going to New York and being able to live off of endorsement money. Not to many endorsements come when you're playing in Minnesota.

It's about time an intelligent poster commented. That's exactly why he didn't come over. It will also help him get stronger and mature more as a player. He will be 20 when he comes over. If he did come over, he would be rooming with someone and most of his contract would be going over to Spain for a buyout. Kahn went over with a couple million trying to negotiate over the summer and a deal didn't get done because Barcelona wanted 5 million from the Wolves. Not including the money Rubio would have to pay.

Hey dumbass, how about you watch some ball, for once, no? Why isn't Rubio in Minny yet? LOLOLOLOL He's staying in Minny because he doesn't want to split time. Ricky Rubio articles don't grow on trees.

Yeah, his buyout was bad, but he wouldn't have entered the draft, if that was true. He wasn't entering the draft to only hope to play in NY. He was planning on leaving, but playing in Minny didn't help.

After Rubio's contract with Spain is up, he'll come over stateside and play in the NBA like all other rookies. It's not like the dude was that old anyways. he's got plenty of years left in him.

lmfao at your terrible lack of NBA knowledge. Did you read any of the above posts? you should read them before posting here again because you're terribly wrong. LeBron isn't going to a place where there is no help, it'd be him back in the old Cavalier days. Go read some current stuff. David Lee most likely won't resign if you do get a big name guy, I think you're trying to relive the glory days too soon. The Wolves will get to the playoffs before the Knicks get LeBron.

Primetime, read what I posted for the other idiot from earlier in this thread.

Why the fuck would he go to a team that has to rebuild around him AGAIN when Cleveland has already done that? With this Cleveland team, they should win a title within the next 3 years. I'm sure it will take way longer than that if he leaves, especially to fucking NY. There's more than just bringing in players to build around him, chemistry is the key, and Cleveland has that.

Click this and have a good day. It's a nice read.

NBA.com: Reports: Rubio to stay in Spain for 2 more years

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Ricky Rubio's Spanish pro team has agreed to trade his rights to Regal FC Barcelona in a deal that will prevent the 18-year-old point guard from joining the Minnesota Timberwolves for two years, according to two internet reports.

Yahoosports.com and ESPN.com cited anonymous sources in reports that said DKV Joventut informed Timberwolves vice president of basketball operations David Kahn on Monday night of the agreement, dashing the team's hopes that Rubio would be in the United States this fall.

The Timberwolves selected Rubio with the fifth pick in the June draft. Kahn was aware that Rubio was under contract with DKV Joventut for the next two years and said he would be fine waiting for a season, or even two, before the prodigy comes to Minnesota.

But Kahn made three trips to Spain in hopes of negotiating down an $8 million buyout that would allow Rubio to join the Timberwolves this season, bringing some excitement and pizzazz to a team, and a ticket box office, that sorely needs both right now.

NBA rules limit the Timberwolves to contributing just $500,000 toward the buyout, meaning Rubio was on the hook for the remaining $7.5 million himself. The steep price tag has been the main reason for his hesitation to leave his homeland and realize his dream of playing in the NBA right away.

Under his agreement with the Regal Barcelona, according to the reports, is a stipulation that would allow him to leave after the 2010-11 European season without having to pay a buyout.

The Associated Press left messages for Kahn, who was in Spain, and Rubio's agent, Dan Fegan, seeking comment.

Kahn has spent the last two months doing a dance with Joventut and Rubio's agents to try and secure his services for the upcoming season, so this news no doubt comes as a disappointment.

But he covered himself nicely in the draft, selecting Syracuse point guard Jonny Flynn right behind Rubio with the No. 6 pick. At the time, the move raised eyebrows.

Two point guards?

Even new coach Kurt Rambis, who was hired earlier in August, wasn't quite sure how the two would fit together in the same backcourt.

"It's not going to be easy. Not necessarily from an offensive standpoint, but from a defensive standpoint," Rambis said when he was hired. "But I do want to play them as much as possible, particularly this year so that they develop as quickly as possible."

Now, provided Rubio stays in Spain until the 2011 season, the Timberwolves aren't faced with having to give two young point guards heavy minutes.

They can hand the keys to Flynn, who excelled at the Las Vegas summer league, while Rubio gets two more seasons of development in one of Europe's top professional leagues. Presumably, he will either drive his trade value higher as he matures so the Timberwolves can reap a windfall while staying with Flynn, or Rubio will join the rebuilding team in two years with more talent around him to allow him to flourish.

Since he was hired in May, Kahn has been open in his assessment that the Wolves' rebuilding plan will take at least two years before they are in a position to compete for a playoff spot in the Western Conference. That, he has said, is why the team can afford to wait for a prospect that in June was called one of the most exciting point guards to enter the draft in years.

The Timberwolves hold his rights in the NBA as long as Rubio is playing professionally, so Rubio's decision to stay in Spain rather than pay the buyout money himself doesn't affect Kahn's leverage in trade talks going forward.

Earlier this month Kahn reiterated his stance that he can "think of a lot worse things than we have to wait a year or two."

Staying in Spain might save Rubio money in the short term, but it does have a negative financial impact for the long term. Coming to the United States in 2011 means he will have to wait another two years before he can become an unrestricted free agent and sign the lucrative second contract that players who produce covet.

Coming to the NBA this season, Rubio would sign a four-year deal worth more than $15 million. If he played the way many expect to him to, Rubio would be in position to sign a big-money extension that kicked in at age 23.

Now that deal, like the Timberwolves, will have to wait.
