Back on topic......my and few friends of mine ended up at the local bar the night Rampage fought What's his name recently. I didn't have much hopes for Rampage, figured he would put on a show by throwing wild phantom haymakers and the other guy would submit him at some point.

My buddy, played Div II football, can't stand MMA. He loves boxing, he thinks a bunch of guys huggin each other half the time, is pretty homo-erotic. I just think it makes for craptacular fights.

You know you are going to see a good fight atleast 50% of the time on these cards usually, its the other 50% of the fights that most people who don't understand MMA base their criticisms.

Yeah, a much bigger problem for the sport is getting the casual fans like yourself and your buddy to understand what is happening when they are "gay hugging". Pretty clear you are a casual fan. But that's no biggie, once people start getting into the actual styles of martial arts you will start to see how the much skill these guys have. Not to mention understand the match ups that are shown between styles. Rampage looks like a wild brawler, but his boxing is actually great, and not only "wild phantom haymakers". That's just one way to tell for me that MMA to you is UFC.

I could give a shit less about MMA and I completely agree with Siciliano. I never really saw any intrigue in watching a fight, it's always been "meh" to me, whether in person, on YouTube, or at the professional level. I won't hate on MMA, but I don't think it's the same kind of competition as team sports and that really disinterests me. I lump it together with boxing, wrestling, golf... really anything that has to do with 1v1 instead of team vs team, and none of this shit I really care about. I like being able to support a team and feel almost a member of it, I'm not the type of dude to have a "favorite fighter/boxer/wrestler/golfer." I don't think this detracts from any type of manliness and I think this kinda explains a lot of other anti-MMAers, from my experience.

I can see why he thinks that though, my original post I said dudes hugging each other was a craptacular fight. I understand what they are doing but I have 3 problems with that....

1) It doesn't make for an exciting fight for the casual fan like my buddy to get into.
2) I think some of these lesser fighters use that to, prolong their fight vs a superior fighter, I think it's cheap to do that. Especially when they are standing there against the fence.
3) My instructor actually would commend me on my ground fighting, but I hated it. He said you are quick as shit, keep going, my reaction is "If some asshole at a bar has me on the ground, than obviously he's better than me, I ain't sticking around if I get up, I am running"

Following the UFC only makes you a casual mma fan and a hardcore ufc fan, there is a difference

I'd consider somebody like Blade, who has participated in a sport where it's performed on an individual basis, as somebody more knowledgeable about the sport than some armchair fatass who studies the fighters and their individual styles and considers themselves a "hardcore MMA fan," (not saying you're some fatass or something, Rob).

Fighters come and go, experience will never leave you.

You would be wrong (not saying blade), a 20 year plus kung fu or karate guy that has no wrestling, bjj, ground fighting, etc...that did karate tournaments which are not full contact, practices on self defense, and does katas has no idea what's going on in MMA just from training a martial art

MMA itself is a totally different sport, it's not really 'style vs style' like in 1993, which showed the myths of the karate/kung fu man in an actually fight environment with minimal rules

A 'hardcore fan' follows the sport, that's pretty much it, if you train it's a plus, but usually in disciplines that have strong MMA roots

Well when you are at work and its getting to be quitting time, you kinda forget a lot of things except for getting the fuck out of work

By the time I got home I was like oh yeah!!! That's dude I have been calling The Martian this whole time, if you follow DC comics you would know what I am talkin about

The thing that really kills me when I am out and about and it happens to be a UFC night, is that the bars and clubs are filled with these d-bags who more than likely don't even know how to throw a punch and stand around watching the one big fight of the night and empty out like it's curfew time once the fight is over. I mean I am pretty sure a lot of these morons have never been in a fight or even know what it feels like when you get punched in the jaw or gut.

Rampage/Jones fight was prime example of that, all these people hanging out yelling and screaming whenever Rampage did any of his futile attacks that missed even though from my count he might have landed 10-15% of his punches where as Jones was moving around and throwing some effective jabs that can disorient a person, but the crowd didn't go "Oooh"or "Ahh" when Jones did that, terrible. As soon as the fight was over 90% of the bar cleared out, these are the fans that annoy the hell out of me when I go out for a UFC night or any other promo. I rather just watch this shit on PPV at home with a bunch of friends.
