In a move many Bengals fans have been asking to happen for nearly two decades the team on Saturday formally announced the hiring of a new football chief, New Orleans Saints front office man D.Geezy, to serve as their General Manager/Executive Vice President of Player Personnel. The move comes less than a week prior to the Bengals' 2009 preseason opener, coincidentally against Geezy's Saints. Citing Geezy's knowledge of the salary cap and his firm plan for changing the franchise, Bengals owner Mike Brown thought the moment was right to hire the New Orleans native despite being just days away from the start of the 2009 season.

"D.Geezy brings rare blend of years of cap knowledge, scouting knowledge, and coaching experience to the table and displayed a pretty impressive knowledge of our roster and our needs to turn things around. He also comes highly recommended," said Brown in a two-paragraph statement released to the media.

Geezy reportedly takes the place of Brown's brother, Senior Vice President of Player Personnel Pete Brown, at the top of the team's football operations staff as he was shockingly fired after years of futility which saw one winning season since he took over in 1991. In addition to Pete Brown's firing, the team's Vice President of Player Personnel, Paul Brown Jr., resigned according to media reports. Brown Jr. is also the brother of Mike Brown.

"It was time to make a change," said Mike Brown in his statement.

"I love my brothers with all of my heart but we just aren't getting it done on the field. Our results speak for itself and it is time to go in another direction.

"I really feel like this organization just acquired one of the bright young minds available out there and he will turn this thing around."

Geezy's introductory press conference is scheduled to be held on Monday at 9:30am.

BENGALS NEW GM/EXECUTIVE V.P. OF PLAYER PERSONNEL D.GEEZY'S INTRODUCTORY PRESS CONFERENCE TRANSCRIPT​

The Bengals hired a new lead man this past weekend, new GM D.Geezy. Monday morning, Geezy held his first press conference since his hiring. Below is the official transcript of the press conference, courtesy of Bengals.com.

Geezy: Before we get this thing started I just want to first say that I thank Mr. (Bengals owner Mike) Brown for giving me this opportunity. I feel like I have been training for this moment since I started playing football in little league and I promise the city of Cincinnati and the Bengals fans that I will not rest until a championship is brought to this city.

Q: What are your thoughts about the timing of the move and how the players and coaches may react to your hiring?

A: While it certainly isn't an ideal time to be hired I certainly don't believe it will have an adverse effect. I've already met with Coach (Marvin) Lewis and we're both on the same page and I think it will be a good relationship moving forward this year.

Q: Do you plan to bring in your own head coach at some point?

A: Well even if I wanted to at this time I wouldn't be able to because of where we're at on the calendar but with that said, I have great respect for Coach Lewis and I think he is one of the great minds of our game. We both have the same goals for this team and I think that is important. Coach Lewis has had successful moments throughout his career & I think he is a heck of a coach and someone I think could help turn things around.

Q: Could you talk a little about this team's reputation for bringing in guys who may not have the best off-the-field background and what your philosophy is on that?

A: I think having a good locker room is a key component in this business and I think in some aspects that that's been lost here in recent years. I haven't met with any of the players outside of Carson Palmer yet so I can't comment too much on that because I don't speak about people's character that I don't know however I do know that a premium will be placed on getting good, blue collar workers into the locker room & identifying and removing anyone that isn't on board with our vision for this franchise.

Q: Is Chad Ochocinco in your plans?

A: It took longer than I thought for that name to be brought up (laughter in the room). Look...Chad's one of the greatest wide receivers in this franchise's history and one of the top wide receivers in the game today. My job here is to acquire great players, not get rid of them. Every player is on equal footing in my eyes and Chad will be evaluated on a day-to-day basis just like every other player on the roster. Can I sit here and say that I know with any degree of certainty what the future holds? Of course not. But I do know this; We're not interested in giving away great players.

Q: With guys out there like Plaxico Burress and Brandon Marshall causing disturbances with their respective teams, are you worried about Chad's effect on the locker room?

A: First of all, I think it is unfair to even mention Chad in the same sentence with those guys. Chad's not out there breaking laws or going to jail. Has he been a model NFL professional? As far as I know, probably not. But I do know this...Chad's goal is the same as mine and it is to win a championship and I'll take that in my locker room any day.

Q: This franchise is notorious for being frugal and also for not having a fully staffed, full-time scouting department. Do you plan to or have the authority to do what you'd like to in that regard?

A: Financially you always have to keep in mind, no matter what team you work for, that you are not spending your own money; You are spending someone else's money. I don't agree that this organization has been frugal per se rather I think the money should be spent differently and in different areas. A scouting department is one of the things we spoke about and something I think Mr. Brown is extremely open to. We have plans for changing the structure here and improving our personnel support group in terms of numbers is a given as something we need to do and plan to do.

Q: You mentioned earlier that you had a conversation with Carson Palmer. How did that go?

A: It went great. I've always said that when and if I finally get this type of position, one of my first moves would be to call the starting quarterback. I just saw it as an opportunity to reach out to this team's on-the-field leader to see where his mind is and to let him know I am behind him. He is a great quarterback and in the midst of his prime and I wanted to let him know that I am going to do everything in my power to surround him with talent so that we can add Super Bowl championships to his resume.

Q: What is your ultimate vision for the style of team you want?

A: I have a vision for the type of team I want but I've always believed that it is important for you to craft your visions and adapt them to a certain extent to the personnel you have available to you. I consider myself a big fan of a rugged, smash-mouth, power-running approach but with that said, here we have a top flight, Hall of Fame caliber quarterback and that's something you need to take advantage of and build around. We're going to put players around Carson to make him better & Coach Lewis and (defensive coordinator) Mike Zimmer are going to continue developing the talent on the defensive side of the ball and we're going to get Bengals football to the next level.

EVEN WHEN GETTING IT RIGHT, BENGALS OWNER MANAGES TO POSSIBLY GET IT WRONG
Timing of Mike Brown's decision to hire GM perplexing | Distraction, awkwardness likely at Bengals camp during '09 campaign​

Now that the sea has settled and the aftershock has subsided following Cincinnati Bengals owner Mike Brown's abrupt mini-house cleaning and subsequent hiring of new GM/Executive V.P. D.Geezy, it is now time to put into focus and examine just what this means for the entire Bengals organization.

For years Bengals fans and followers have been lobbying for Brown to place a true football mind at the top of the organization since the passing of his father, Paul Brown. Following the elder Brown's departure from us, the Bengals have been abysmal posting a whopping 1 winning season (2005) since his passing in August of 1991. Fans and media have congratulated Brown for finally making the switch and removing his brothers, former Senior VP of Player Personnel Pete Brown and VP of Player Personnel Paul Brown Jr., from the top of the team's football food chain. However, curiously the move comes about 6 months too late. At a time when NFL teams should be free from off-the-field job related distractions and 100% focused on football, Brown's sudden move diminishes that percentage mark ten-fold.

Let's be clear about one thing: Bengals coaches and players have all been put on notice and have to be facing a strong sense of insecurity following the move, just days prior to the opening of the 2009 NFL preseason. In particular, Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis' hot seat just reached hell-like heat levels. Without a doubt Lewis could not be 100% comfortable with Geezy's proclamation (or lack thereof) that Lewis' job is safe during his introductory press conference. Newly hired NFL general managers almost never stand-pat with the current coaching regime, particularly when that regime has not yielded satisfactory results in years prior. There is no question that Lewis must improve on his 46-49-1 record going into this season and to save his job, it is postseason or bust for him and his assistants.

With the Bengals being notorious for signing players with checkered pasts and putting up with the antics of Chad Ochocinco, the lack of team success followed by the hiring of Geezy is sure to send a message to the entire organization. It will be interesting to see just how the Bengals football staff and players respond as we head into the season.

Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports that Bengals GM D.Geezy has indicated that the team's starting units are expected to play about one quarter before giving way to the team's reserves in tonight's preseason matchup against the New Orleans Saints. "We know what we have in our starters but we have several young guys that we'd like to get a good look at," said Geezy. "Tonight is the first of three chances for several players to make an impression prior to the first cut-down in a couple of weeks."

Yeah he played the whole first half. I guess the game's logic doesn't allow for subs to happen until halftime in the preseason. It definitely felt weird seeing Brees out there in the second quarter. I took my starters out after 1 1/2 quarters and Palmer played only 3 series.

Coles had a nice game, but other than that, it seemed like you had a rough go of it. Thankfully, it is the preseason...that's what these games are for - to work out the kinks in our overall game. I had major pass rush problems on offense. I feel good about the quarterbacks. The INTs were all USER error. This was my first game on All-Madden since I bought it so a lot of it was just timing.
