Game 9, Year 3: Buffalo Bills at Cincinnati Bengals
Game 9, Year 3: Buffalo Bills at Cincinnati Bengals
23 -- 5-4
28 -- 6-3
TOP: Bengals RB C.J. Spiller follows the cut-block of FB Jacob Hester on his way to a game-winning 62-yard touchdown run with 3:46 remaining in the fourth quarter. The touchdown made the score 28-23 and was a career-long run for Spiller. BOTTOM: Spiller also scored the game's first touchdown. The Bengals came out with an EMPTY 5-wide set with Spiller lined up at wide receiver. Before the snap he went into motion then took a handoff and spun his way out of a gang tackle on his way to a 6-yard touchdown that made the score 7-0 in the first quarter.
Bengals RB C.J. Spiller's career-long 62-yard touchdown run provided the game-winning points as Cincinnati overcame a 23-14 fourth quarter deficit to defeat Buffalo 28-23 at cold & rainy Paul Brown Stadium. Spiller, who had carried the ball 14 times for just 16 yards up to that point, scored the game's first and last touchdowns as his team won their sixth game out of their last seven. The second year running back out of Clemson finished the game with 17 carries for 84 yards and 2 touchdowns and also added 3 receptions for 36 yards on the day.
After storming out to 14-3 lead, Cincinnati fell behind in the second quarter and the Bills scored the game's next 20 points. The team had problems holding QB Kevin Kolb in check as the Bills off-season free agent pick-up went 23 of 28 for 354 yards and two touchdowns. In the end though, it was the Bengals who made just enough plays to come away with a victory.
Bengals QB Carson Palmer, who posted a season-low 46.4 passer rating and just 158 passing yards in the stormy conditions, stepped up in the fourth quarter along with WR Chad Ochocinco. Ochocinco was held without a catch through three quarters but came to life with 5 fourth quarter receptions for 49 yards, including a 7-yard touchdown catch that made the score 23-21 with 11:25 to go in the game.
Palmer saw intense pressure throughout the game and was sacked 6 times. Bills DE Aaron Maybin, the league leader in sacks with 13, abused Bengals first round pick RT Anthony Davis and took down Palmer 4 times.
"This was about as ugly as it can get but there will be games like this and a win is a win," said Bengals head coach Mike Martz.
"Coming into the game, we were tops in the league as far as not allowing sacks but Buffalo did a great job. Fortunately for us though we made just enough plays to come out with a win."
The Bills would get one last chance to come away with a win. After trading possessions, Buffalo got the ball back with under a minute remaining in penetrated to the Bengals' 34-yard line. However Kolb's desperation heave with :58 left to WR Lee Evans in the end zone was batted away by the out-stretched hand of Bengals FS Taylor Mays to preserve Cincinnati's win.
"This is the mark of a good team. Good teams find a way to win games when things aren't going their way and we did just that today." said Martz.
Cincinnati (6-3) will host three-time defending NFC Champion Arizona (3-6) next week on ESPN's Monday Night Football. The Cardinals are struggling following the retirement of QB Kurt Warner and the departures of WR Anquan Boldin to the Giants in free agency and head coach Ken Whisenhunt to Houston this past off-season. New QB Jason Campbell and new head coach Mike Solari's crew have lost 5 straight games after starting the season 3-1.
