I'm for it, especially if it means Florida State joining the Big XII. I would be very interested in seeing what would happen with both the SEC and Big XII going after recruits from Florida and Texas. It would be a very fun thing to watch.

Clemson, FSU and ND are definitely in (save for ol' Deloss derailing everything at the last minute), and I wouldn't be surprised if they add GT and some combo of UL, Miami, UMD, and Pitt before ND would join (I think their TV contract runs out in 2015) to get to 16... VT and NCSU would likely go to the SEC in that case, with the B10 sniping some of the AAU schools (UVA, UNC, Duke?) thus fully destroying the ACC...

TV contract runs out after the 2015 season is done. Frankly, I doubt the TV contract is an issue anyways as ND has been pushing towards it's own network for a while and it wouldn't surprise me if them moving to the Big 12 involves some sort of TV deal for them or they are allowed to have national broadcast rights to their brand. Will be interesting.

Not really. I've been all for ND joining a conference for a while. My pick was the ACC but it seems the teams I was most looking forward to joining the ACC for are moving to the Big12 anyways so...Oh well. I was looking forward to seeing some Duke-ND, Duke-UNC basketball but oh well.

I assume ND's hockey affiliation will stay the same though.

Also, FWIW.....I don't think any move is imminent. ND has a lot of shit to figure out football wise before this move and will wait for the other pieces to come together before making the jump.

edit: However, with the additions of ND, FSU and Clemson, the contract payout would jump to $28 million per team, per year, not counting the money from tier three rights (ND would make at least $10-15 million there per year) nor the money from a B12 championship game (additional $3-5 million per school)...

I doubt it really. UT and ND seem to have a pretty good working relationship going as of recently. If UT and Dodds really do feel they are the biggest baddest dues on the block..then they really shouldn't feel intimidated by ND

On Tuesday, Dodds confirmed in an interview with CBSSports.com that the conference has approached Notre Dame about joining:

We've talked to Notre Dame about the Big 12 ... They could put some football here [by playing a few non-conference games against Big 12 opponents].

Dodds is talking about the plan that would have non-football sports join the league, with football having more of a partnership by playing a handful of games against Big 12 teams, which would likely include Texas on a consistent basis -- a game, it seems safe to say, that fans around the country would love to see.

But what about expansion? Texas has been thought to be against it and Dodds confirmed that position as well, once again citing the advantages of not playing a conference championship game:

I don't think it needs to expand. It certainly can expand because there will be people that will want to be a part of it. That's another good thing.

We could expand to some number. You name the number -- 12, 14, 16. We could expand but the question is 'do we need to expand?' In my mind 10 is perfect because you play everybody in football and there is a double-round-robin in basketball.

When we get into whatever system we get in for a championship, I think those coaches that play in a conference championship are going to say 'What in the world are we doing?'

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. -- Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick said Wednesday that the school remains committed to the Big East for its Olympic sports, despite a recent report indicating that Texas AD DeLoss Dodds has reached out to gauge the program's interest in joining the Big 12.

Swarbrick dismissed the report, saying, "It's a mistake to treat this as some sort of pitch by DeLoss. We're two people who talk frequently and talk about where we think this business is headed and who's doing what. We've talked about playing each other more, scheduling each other in other sports. It's a conversation that's had all of those elements to it.

"No one should have an impression where there was a point in time where DeLoss was making a pitch to Notre Dame. It's been a more collaborative, collegial discussion about the 2 schools and how we can do more together."
