Officer delayed Moats as relative died

PLANO, Texas -- A Dallas police officer who delayed Houston Texans' running back Ryan Moats from visiting his mother-in-law before she died in a Plano hospital has been reassigned to dispatch pending an investigation.

On the Web site of the Dallas Morning News, video from a police dashboard camera shows a Dallas police officer stopping Texans running back Ryan Moats in front of the hospital where his mother-in-law lay dying of cancer. Watch Video

Moats, his wife and other family members rushed from their suburban Dallas home to Baylor Regional Medical Center at Plano during the early hours of March 18 after getting word around midnight that Moats' mother-in-law, Jonetta Collinsworth, was dying. She had breast cancer.

"As Moats signed the ticket, Powell made another point.

"Attitude's everything," he said, the newspaper reported. "All you had to do is stop, tell me what was going on. More than likely, I would have let you go."

Powell, hired in January 2006, did not return a call for comment, the newspaper reported. But Dallas Assistant Chief Floyd Simpson said Powell told police officials that he believed that he was doing his job.

"When people are in distress, we should come to the rescue," Simpson said, according to the report. "We shouldn't further their distress."

Earlier in the story, "My mom is dying," Tamishia Moats replied.

That officer is so stupid and should be reprimanded.

sounds to me that instead of just explaining to the officer what was happening he started getting attitude. so instead of it just being a miscommunication that could have been easily avoided, the cop will have to publicly apologize to black people everywhere, go see Jesse Jackson, lose his job and have to deal with everyone harassing him and his family for being a bunch of racists. but he is a cop, so he is a piece of shit and had it coming, right?

I guess every officer should just allow any moving violations if the person claims a relative is dying. The officer was just doing his job and because Moats didn't have his insurance, he got detained longer than expected.

I feel sorry for the loss, but in reality, the officer was just following protocol.

I think he was doing his job. You're not allowed to run red lights, stop signs, and speed no matter what. Give him his ticket with minimal delay, and let him go. That's what the cop should have done.

They were in a hospital parking lot flipping out. A nurse even came out and said that her mother was dying. Once that happens, you say ok I'll leave the ticket on your car, go inside. After the cop heard that, he should've let them go. This was some bullshit and I agree with Moats, I find it hard to believe that race wasn't a factor in his decision.

You guys gotta read the whole story, not just the clippings in the first post. A nurse came out and backed them up, the woman's father even came out and tried to explain what was going on. Then they let Moat's wife go back in but not Moats. The cop said I'm almost done after this instead of just saying I'll leave it on your car, what a fucking dickhole. I'm with Moats here, this was probably racially motivated.

Nice to see them admitting their mistake instead of just taking some we were doing our job approach. Their was a longer article on yahoo's homepage that I read today. The clippings in the first post don't give everyone the full picture.

Just to correct everyone. From the stories I read a nurse didn't come out. Another officer came to te car and said he had talked to a nurse.

A. Moats not breaking the law.
B. Moats having his insurance on him.

Or by the officer realizing that Moats and his wife were obviously upset and when the other officer went and asked the nurse he could've let them go so they could be by the mother's side during her final moments.

That officer was a DICK! I know he was doing his job, but thousands of officers everyday decide to let somebody off the hook for far less. I blame the economy.
