Purdue beat Penn State on a last second basket by JaJuan Johnson.

Was a horribly reffed game. First E'twaun Moore lost the ball out of bounds with 5 seconds left, right in front of the ref, but the refs messed up and gave Purdue the ball back. Then Johnson hits the GW to put purdue up 1 with 2 secs left clock is running, idiot ref stops the game to check if it was a 2 or a 3. Penn State had no TOs left.

Penn State would've had a hard time inbounding before time expired, they were just standing around under the basket after JJ hit the shot. Even if they got the ball inbounds they would've needed to chuck a long three...so it was completely irrelevant whether Johnson's shot was a 2 or 3. But ref stops the game, then puts 3.4 on the clock and Penn State gets time to draw up a play.

Purdue sweeps Penn State (sorry Woy) and ESPN is coming to campus on Saturday for the MSU game.

Huge game in the NEC tonight, as the top team in conference Long Island (5-1) and second in the league Robert Morris (4-2) battle for the second time at the Charles L. Sewall center.

Long Island's only conference loss is to the Colonials, as they knocked them off 70-69 behind 20 points from Velton Jones, who stepped up in the absences of Karon Abraham (who was serving his suspension then) and the only Colonial senior Gary Wallace (who broke his finger 26 seconds into the game). Since then, the Blackbirds have won seven straight, including destroying Wagner (4-2 in NEC) 84-54 last Saturday.

Robert Morris has won three straight since losing to the Seahawks in overtime on the 6th. Karon Abraham has averaged 23 points per game since we turned our calendars to 2011.

The Colonials have played Big 6 conference teams like WVU, Pitt and Arizona whereas the toughest match-up Long Island has faced is Northwestern. So Robert Morris comes into this game much more battle-tested.

I haven't watched Wagner, CCSU or Quinnipiac play this season, but as long as Justin Rutty is out for Quinnipiac, Long Island is clearly the best team in the NEC. They have the right mix of outside scorers with inside play and have a stifling defense that frustrated the Colonials all night.

That being said, there's no way Robert Morris is 16 points worse than the Blackbirds, even without the evidence that the Colonials were the last team to beat Long Island. LIU is a very aggressive ball club, and were overly aggressive tonight. I'm not going to pin this loss on the refs cause you can't blame them for a double-digit loss ever, but they were absolutely horrendous. Karon Abraham took two elbows to the face in the first half and had to sit out most of it, and when he was in and not getting smacked, his jersey was being tugged on every time coming through screens. I can see teams getting away with that a few times throughout a game, but not every single possession. He was never his "best player in the NEC" self after the shot to the face and only had 6 points in just 16 minutes.

The Colonial big men were awful and will ultimately be this team's downfall in the conference tournament if they lose. I've been trying to figure out who Lijah Thompson has been reminding me of all season and it became clear to me tonight that he's a very poor, probably homeless man's Rob Robinson with better foul shooting. When he's motivated, he's a decent player who helps more than he hurts. When he's not though, he gets outrebounded by guards and can't catch a cold in the post. Yann Charles isn't much better; I guess they don't teach you how to rebound in Canada.

Velton Jones was the only one who decided to show up tonight, as he led the Colonials with 14. I said last year after the loss to Quinnipiac in the regular season that I wanted to run into that team again in the conference tourney, and I'm going to repeat that again. I want to see Long Island again more than anything in March.

Nice to rebound and get a win against a team that needs the refs to steal them a win last match-up. Very physical game with technical fouls on both sides and intentional fouls as well. SFC flops like a damn Magikarp when they get grazed and got the benefit of some calls, but it's alright in the end.

Velton Jones once again led the Colonials with 18, while Karon Abraham had 10 on a bad shooting night from outside the arc. RMU went 2-12 from three-point land, whereas the Terriers were 8-25.

Rematch of the NEC title game next Thursday against a Justin Rutty-less Quinnipiac Bobcat team.

Pitt is like a Big10 team that plays in the Big East. They just kind of wear you down, with no discernible skill. At least in years past they would have one or two interesting players like a Blair or a Young...this year's team is pretty blah.

Pitt was a pretty weak #2, and I don't think Ohio State is a good #1. They should have lost to Illinois, but the 27 free throws they got were a gift from the Big10 officials.
