Steve Smith: "I Will Bust Janoris Jenkins In His Mouth"

No one bothered to tell St. Louis Rams cornerback Janoris Jenkins about the rules and regulations of the game, which have been established by Carolina Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith as "89, bottom line."



Smith put the exclamation point on a testy, fracas-marred game by breaking out the "You're no Primetime" touchdown dance directed at a trash-talking Jenkins.
Smith explained his actions in an epic post-game interview. Below is a transcript, via the Charlotte Observer's Jonathan Jones.
Take us through the touchdown, looks like you made some guys missed. "I'll let Janoris Jenkins go over it on film on Monday."
Did you point to him? "Yes, I directly pointed to him."
Did you think you'd get a taunting penalty? "Don't give a damn."
What was the dance you did? "Well he thinks he's Deion (Sanders). He's not."
To get your 800th catch against him? "He's just another notch on the bedpost. That's 800. He ain't no different."
For your 800th to be a touchdown, what's that mean to you? "Just another dude."
Did you have any run-ins with him before? "No. What I don't like is a young guy, comes in, obviously his first time ever using the Internet and Google, and he Googles information about me, talks about my wife and stuff like that. That's kind of some of the (B.S.) I just don't play with."








What specifically was he saying? "That's all I'm going to say. I don't play them games. When you try to take it personal like that, I don't have any great humbling things to say. So he can take his (butt) back to St. Louis and watch the (expletive) film because I don't play them games. And if I see him in the streets I'm going to bust him in his (expletive) mouth."

On your touchdown celebration, was that a little bit extra?"When you embarrass people, you rub it in their face. When your dog (urinates) on the carpet, you rub it in his face."
Smith is a complex character as far as professional athletes go. He's been voted by his peers as one of the NFL's funniest trash talkers as well as one of the players they would least like to fight.
He entered the league with a short fuse, fueled by an unhealthy level of intensity -- unique even among professional football players.
Smith sought help from a sports psychologist after pummeling practice-squad receiver Anthony Bright during a 2002 film session. Six years later, he rearranged cornerback Ken Lucas' face in a practice-field fight.
Smith has matured since then, emerging as a team leader and one of the most respected athletes in his community. He'll regret his threat to Jenkins. Just to be safe, though, the young cornerback ought to cross the street if he sees 89 coming.

Said this when Brad Ford went down. These games are impossible to get excited for with Clemens. There is really no point in starting him at this point, might as well try Austin Davis, team is going nowhere, he's been around the team for two years, might as well see what they have.

This team is playing hard behind Kellen Clemens. Bradford may have more talent, but he couldn't lead this team out of a wet paper bag. Cut Bradford after this season, sign Clemens to a one year contract, and draft a QB with one of the Rams 1st round picks.

Bradford was having an excellent season, and Clemens is straight trash.

The Rams have won the last two games behind defense, a great running game, and Tavon Austin making five huge plays. Clemens is along for the ride, nothing more. And he lost the Seattle game all by himself.

Bradford was having a good year on paper, but the majority of his touchdowns and yards were in junk time. When it really mattered early in games, Bradford was not good. Hence his poor record.

Clemens definitely isn't the answer. But when you have an NFL back up quarterback stepping in and leading the Rams to big victories over playoff caliber teams, what does that say about Bradford? Yes, the defense has been a huge factor the last two games, but Clemens has also made a lot of passes down field in big situations that Bradford doesn't make. This team is playing with an energy behind Clemens that I haven't seen since the mid 2000s. The QB position is more about just completing passes and not turning the ball over, it's about being a leader. And I don't see Bradford ever becoming an effective leader.

naw, not so fast...all the hardcore Rams fan freaks on forums I may quit going to because they are such biased homers... point to many penalized plays and dropped passes against Bradford. He was doing well, Regardless of trash time.. he will still be given that chance next year but I Assume they draft or trade or what ever and get another QB regardless

I'm so sick of the Bradford excuses. Most Rams homers have them. I've heard all of the below at some point:

1) He has no weapons
2) He has a bad offensive line
3) He doesn't have a supportive running game
4) The offensive play calling is terrible
5) His receivers drop too many passes
6) His offensive coordinator changes every year

I could probably come up with 10 more. I'm sick of the excuses. At what point do you put the blame on the quarterback? All I hear is excuse after excuse for the Bradford lead Rams. Then, as soon as Bradford goes down, a career back up steps in and has this team playing better than at any point during Bradford's tenure.

Not only do I think he has very little to do with these wins, I also think he directly contributed to two losses. I think the Rams definitely win the Seattle game with Bradford, and probably win the Titans game.

SF was the only bad game Bradford played. Don't forget, the Rams blew out Jacksonville & Houston back to back weeks, were on a roll, and Bradford played brilliantly in both games. Then he got hurt against Carolint, and Clemens stunk it up against the Seahawks & Titans. Rams are 6-6 at minimum if Bradford stays healthy. He had a 14-4 TD/INT and a 90+ QB Rating when he went down. He was on his way to a breakout year.

I dont think he'll ever be a star, but he can easily be Joe Flacco or Matt Ryan.

yep, and he was still statistically better than quite a lot of QBs even though he hadn't played for 3 weeks LOL

the truth is he has actually been a better QB than Kaepernick and even Wilson in some areas

Bradford is a very accurate passer and his numbers this year look really good on paper. However, he lacks in two key areas that don't necessarily show up in the box score: pocket presence and leadership. Bradford is much more talented than Clemens, but you can tell that there is a different fire in this team since he's taken over at QB. Maybe there are other factors at play like the defense taking over the leadership role or a change in coaching philosophy, I don't know, but this team looks different suddenly overnight.

It blows my mind that so many people make excuse after excuse for Bradford. Something or someone else is always to blame for the Rams' failures over the past four season and it's never Bradford. Then when Bradford goes down and the Rams look like a completely different team, people are saying that the Rams would be even better with Bradford in there. What? The guy can't lose in the media.

Bradford has proven that he is nothing more than average at best, and I don't feel right about paying a QB who is average at best $14 million next year. How many other organizations would give a below average QB with average potential five years to prove himself? Looking around the league you have guys like Wilson, Kaepernick, Luck, RG III, etc. having immediate results. Bradford has had plenty of opportunity to prove himself in St. Louis, and all he's shown is that he is mediocre at best. I am 100% convinced that the Rams will never be a 10 win team with Bradford at QB, no matter how much talent is around him. It's time to move on.

Again, I disagree with the bold. I don't see a different team or a different fire, and even if I did, why on earth would I attribute that to Clemens? He hasn't done a thing. The Rams looked just as good in the Jacksonville & Houston games, and unlike these last two games, the QB actually contributed to those wins, as Bradford played excellent in both games (Clemens has done virtually nothing the last two weeks, and to me has had very little to do with the recent success aside from staying out of the way and handing the ball off to Stacy & Cunningham).

Where were you after the Seattle & Tennessee games when Clemens not only did nothing, but arguably lost the games by himself (he DEFINITELY lost the Seattle game)? Did the Rams look like a different team then? Actually, they did. They looked like shit.

We can disagree on Bradford, but I still don't see the logic in cutting him on the final year of his deal, coming off what was shaping up as the best season of his career. He's a million times better than Clemens, not even close. Why would you intentionally go into a fresh season with a bum behind center? Bradford is under contract one more year, you let him go out there and play. If he repeats his performance from this season, you resign him. If not, you move on.
