Official Tennessee Titans Forum Thread

I found some article from back in May on the tennessean.com where Jim Wyatt had interviewed Bulluck and Keith said he was pretty sure it was his last year as a titan. Him and his agent had tried to get an extension going and the team wasnt biting. I can see letting Eddie, Steve, Frank,Chris Brown, Albert, and others go. But i would hope to goodness they didnt let KB walk. He is the heart of the freaking team. Maybe you have to overpay a bit for a 10 year vet, but he still busts his ass. He's training in the mountains of California this offseason just to try to keep up with the young guys. Hes pushing his body much harder in the rough terrain than the guys just lifting weights.

For anyone who cares or didnt catch it... Ozzie Newsome continues his trend of signing every titan that has ever been released.

Practice squad stud WR Biren Ealy is now a Raven.

He was released last summer though ;) He caught on with the Saints and was then arrested for urinating in public.

August is here and that means two things: college kids are starting to go back to school, and the NFL pre-season is upon us. This NFL season should be as good as any, with many teams being considered as contenders to get to the Super Bowl. There isn't one set favorite as there was during the Patriots dynasty a few years back.

In Nashville, spirits are high. Why should they though?

The Titans had the best record in the NFL last year at 13-3, but in the divisional playoffs they fell to a team they beat in the regular season, the Baltimore Ravens. The game had its share of controversial moments, but it doesn't matter how many excuses you make, you can't go back and change the outcome of the game.

After the playoff loss, the 0-16 Detroit Lions scooped up Titans defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz to become their new head coach. Then in the off-season - more specifically, the first day of free agency, the team's biggest defensive star Albert Haynesworth left Nashville to sign a nine-figure contract with the free-spending Washington Redskins. It looked like Big Al put out a lot more energy on the field last year and was definitely a key to the Titans success.

But yet, spirits are still high.

The press welcome first-round pick Kenny Britt to Nashville.

NFL DRAFT 2009
Pick #30 (1) - Kenny Britt, WR, Rutgers
Pick #62 (2) - Sen'Derrick Marks, DT, Auburn
Pick #89 (3) - Jared Cook, TE, South Carolina
Pick #94 (3) - Ryan Mouton, CB, Hawaii
Pick #130 (4) - Gerald McRath, LB, Southern Miss
Pick #135 (4) - Troy Kropong, OT, Tulane
Pick #173 (5) - Javon Ringer, RB, Michigan State
Pick #203 (6) - Jason McCountry, CB, Rutgers
Pick #206 (6) - Dominique Edison, WR, Stephen F Austin
Pick #239 (7) - Ryan Durand, OG, Syracuse
Pick #242 (7) - Nick Schommer, FS, North Dakota State

For the first time as a Titans fan, I was completely satisifed with our draft. In the 1998 NFL Draft, the Oilers drafted Utah receiver Kevin Dyson with their first round pick. (Randy Moss was still on the board, but that's for another debate) It's been 11 years since a receiver has been introduced as the Titans first-round pick. Now that streak ends with the pick of Rutgers receiver Kenny Britt.

Britt is a big receiver (6'3", 218) with big play potential. He ran a 4.56 forty and had a vertical of 37.0 inches at the combine. Although his hands are inconsistent at times, I see Britt making a big impact in his rookie year. The thing that I love the most about the rookie is his blocking. This kind of blocking will help out the Tennessee running game a lot, especially when speedster Chris Johnson gets to the outside. Here's a little highlight from the Ball State-Rutgers game.

Sen'Derrick Marks was a good value pick. In some mock drafts, he was projected to go late first round, but instead he slipped to the second round into the Titans' laps. He'll join last year's second rounder from Eastern Michigan, Jason Jones, to add depth to a already deep defensive line.

Jared Cook was the first of two third round picks for the Titans. His coach at South Carolina, Steve Spurrier, compared him to Lions star receiver Calvin Johnson. I wouldn't go that far, but Jared is really athletic for a tight end. He's 6'5", 246 pounds, ran the fastest forty of all tight ends at the combine (4.50) and had a 41.0 inch vertical jump. He didn't put up eye-popping statistics with the Gamecocks, which worries me, but he was overall a great pick.

The other third-rounder was Hawaii corner Ryan Mouton. I expect big things from the former teammate of Colt Brennan. He's not the biggest (5'9", 187 lbs.) but is really athletic and scrappy. He ran a 4.48 forty and had a 39.5 inch vertical at the combine. Reminds me a little of current Titans star corner Cortland Finnegan. If these two start beside each other in the near future, look for a lot of upset receivers and possibly a few personal foul penatlies. He has return abilities as well.

The last pick I'll talk about won't make a big impact this year, but I'm really high on him from his body of work in college. Javon Ringer, runningback from Michigan State, fell to the fifth round and will be probably third on the depth chart behind Chris Johnson and LenDale White. He ran for 1637 yards last year on 390 carries and had 22 touchdowns, putting him on the All-American second team and as one of the finalists for the Doak Walker Award.

The former Pittsburgh Steeler signed with the Titans this off-season.

NEW ACQUISTIONS
QB Patrick Ramsey (from Denver)
WR Nate Washington (from Pittsburgh)
DT Jovan Hoye (from Tampa Bay)
CB DeMarcus Faggins (from Houston)
KR Mark Jones (from Carolina)

Like usual, the Titans didn't make much of a splash in the off-season. The biggest acquistion in my opinion from this list is the signing of Nate Washington.

Washington played college football at Tiffin, where he holds eight school records. After going undrafted in 2005, he was picked up by the Pittsburgh Steelers and caught his first pass in the 2005 AFC Championship Game against the Denver Broncos. Eventually, Washington's role expanded and became the slot receiver in Pittsburgh's offense, behind Hines Ward and Super Bowl hero Santonio Holmes.

Now living in Pennsylvania, besides catching every Titans game, I also get a chance to watch most of the Pittsburgh games. I've always been impressed with Washington - he's surprisingly quick and is pretty productive for a slot receiver in a run-based offense. Coming over to Tennessee will give him the chance to be a number two guy right away behind Justin Gage, and it gives Kerry Collins another target to throw to.

Jovan Hoye just adds even more depth to our defensive line and will help soften the blow from losing Albert Haynesworth. DeMarcus Faggins will be a nickel and dime back for the Titans, after they let go of Eric King and Reynaldo Hill in the off-season. Mark Jones gives the Titans another return specialist after Chris Carr decided to sign with Baltimore, and Patrick Ramsey will be insurance policy in case Kerry Collins goes down, or Vince Young can't carry the load if Collins is out.

cortbeingcort.jpg

Cortland Finnegan will look to anger more opposing receivers this year.

THE STARS
HB Chris Johnson (251 carries, 1228 yards, 9 TD, 43 catches, 260 yards, 1 TD)
OT Michael Roos
C Kevin Mawae
LB Keith Bulluck (98 tackles, 0.5 sacks, 1 FF)
CB Cortland Finnegan (70 tackles, 1 sack, 5 INT, 1 TD)
FS Michael Griffin (75 tackles, 1 sack, 7 INT, 1 FF, 1 TD)
SS Chris Hope (78 tackles, 1 sack, 4 INT)

These are the players that I believe will carry the team this year - our stars. If one of these guys get hurt, it'll take a huge effort to fill the void.

Chris Johnson is the focal point of this offense and for good reason. The Titans' first round pick of last year, he made a great first impression to the rest of the league. Johnson ran for 93 yards on 15 carries and caught a touchdown in an opening week with over division rival Jacksonville. His lightning quick speed (4.24 40 yard dash at the combine) is what Titans fans drool over, but he is also very tough inside.

Michael Roos and Kevin Mawae are big reasons why Johnson finds so many holes to run through. The two Titans Pro Bowl offensive linemen are considered to be some of the best at their respective positions. Mawae was missed in the divisional playoff game against Baltimore, as the backup Leroy Harris had numerous high snaps in shotgun formations.

Keith Bulluck has been the heart and soul of this Titans defense for the last seven years. Although last year was a down year for the two-time All-Pro, look for the Syracuse alumni to wreck havoc this season. He's still one of the best linebackers in the league and there's no way he wants to have two down seasons in a row.

Some consider the Titans secondary to be one of the tops in the league. Three Pro Bowlers last year confirm that fact. Cortland Finnegan, the former seventh-round pick, had a breakout season last year. He had the reputation as one of the smaller tough guys in the league, but after five interceptions last season, he established himself as also one of the best corners too.Michael Griffin also had a breakout year last season. After starting 10 out of 16 games as a rookie in 2007, Griffin had the starting job from day one and made the most of it. Seven interceptions, including the game clinching pick six against the Pittsburgh Steelers, put him in talks as the one of the best safeties in the league.

Speaking of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Chris Hope was once one of them. He was signed by the Titans in 2006 and enjoyed his best season then, with 121 tackles and five interceptions. Injuries limited him to 11 games the following year, but last year he came back with another Pro Bowl season. Griffin and Hope both make life hard for opposing quarterbacks.

LenDaleWhite.jpg

This was LenDale White two years ago. You won't notice him this year with a lot of that weight burned off.

THE X-FACTORS
HB LenDale White (200 carries, 773 yards, 15 TD)
WR Justin Gage (34 catches, 651 yards, 6 TD)
DT Jason Jones (31 tackles, 5 sacks)

Stars can't carry the entire team; role players need to step up as well. There are many players on the Titans that can play the "X-factor" role.

LenDale White is in his contract year and looking to make a huge impression on the league. When he walked into training camp however, his body made an impression on his teammates.
"[The weight loss] wasn't a lot of major diet changes. (It was) watching what I drink. I was a big Patron consumer. ... That's what it was. I was drinking a lot, drank a lot of alcohol. I cut that out of my diet all the way. I don't drink at all. I cut the drinking, I stopped drinking for six months." - quoted from LenDale himself, article from Chris Chase on Yahoo!
The former USC back is down 30 pounds from last year and is in the best shape of his life. With Johnson back from the ankle injury that he suffered during the playoffs, look for these both him and LenDale to run through opposing defenses. White says he's motivated from the fumble that helped lose the game against the Ravens last January, but I believe the whole "contract year" thing plays a part as well. Look at Albert Haynesworth last year.

Justin Gage comes into the season as the number one receiver, and now he has a little bit of help with Nate Washington arriving from Pittsburgh. Last year, he was the number one guy, but an injury caused him to miss four games. Collins needs more production from his receivers to get this offense going and it'll all start with him.

"Who's this guy and what's he doing sacking Ben Roethlisberger for the fourth time today?" Those were exactly my thoughts while watching the Steelers/Titans game last year. Sure, I knew of Jones, but he was just a guy that filled in whether Haynesworth or Tony Brown needed a blow. However, that game against the eventual Super Bowl champions made me realize his potential. With Big Al gone, Jones steps right into that role of starting defensive tackle. A little undersized, the former Eastern Michigan product will have to step up and play like he did that day the entire year.

The Titans dropped their AFC and NFC North opponents from last year and picked up the AFC East and the NFC West for this season. Including those teams, they play both Super Bowl representives and the AFC West champion San Diego Chargers on Christmas Day. They also have four prime-time games this year, including the opening night game on NBC at Heinz Field against the Steelers.

THE PREDICTION

11-5, 1st in AFC South (lose in AFC Championship)

The Titans stayed in house with the promotion of defensive backs coach Chuck Cecil, who will run the same defensive scheme as Jim Schwartz. Johnson and White should carry the load for Tennessee and with another threat at receiver in Nate Washington, the offensive has improved slightly. On defense, the loss of Big Al will hurt a little, but not as much as people think. Other than that, the entire defense returns, which was one of the top defenses in the NFL last year. The schedule is tougher than last year's, but the AFC South has a lot of question marks going into the season.

For the Colts, it's how they'll respond after the retirement of Tony Dungy. I believe they'll be fine, and end up taking a Wild Card spot with a 10-6 record. The Texans are everyone's surprise playoff pick this season...and the last season...and the season before that. I'll put it this way - if it happens, then congrats, I was wrong. If not, I'll say, "I told you so." They finish at 9-7. The Jaguars will be better, but still will hover at the bottom of the divison at 7-9.

In the end, I feel the Titans won't have another 13-3 season, but rather drop two more games and end up at 11-5, which will win them the AFC South. It hurts me to say this, but they'll fall to the New England Patriots, who is my pick to win the Super Bowl over the Philadelphia Eagles, in the AFC Championship game. Enjoy the season guys - I'm excited to watch another great year of NFL football.

Another Titans fan signing in...I like what Vince did last night yea he looked not so good at first but he didnt mope when he threw the pick and came back and threw a sweet touch pass off the pump fake so thats progress in my book.Hopefully he keeps fighting Im rooting for him and will be using him on Madden all year

Welcome to the thread Mone, there arent many VY apologists left around here. You and Droopy thats about it. I think we were all big VY fans at one point, but he keeps talking himself into a hole everytime he opens his mouth. HOPEFULLY his play can do the talking and he can get out of that hole.

This recently conducted Esquire magazine interview he did definitely does not help his case where he claims you only need legs to be a quarterback, the arm dont matter.

Welcome to the family. Some day here, us Titans fans will rule VSN.

Any thoughts on possibly signing Michael Vick?

I read that article and it seems like guys are interpretting his comments wrong..being a QB is all about the legs which means if you dont have correct footwork the pass will be off target.Passing does use the legs alot you have to plant then lead into the throw.Thats all he was trying to say.:2thumbs:

But thats just it...he has horrible footwork.

I think this will be Vince's last year in Titan blue. The look on Fisher's face after that interception in the Hall of Fame game said it all.

Really early to be talking about it, but I would love to see Tennessee pick up Dan LeFevour with a mid round pick next year.

I HAVE LE FEVOUR!

The titans CUT Rafael Little and kept Chris Henry?????

a few surprises there for sure

ONCE AGAIN THEY FUCKING KEPT CHRIS HENRY, its like they are afraid to admit they made a mistake. They cut Quinton Ganther who has been in the system for like 4 years now. He can play halfback and fullback :(

Ganther, Fowler, and Boiman caught me by surprise

Im glad they cut Faggins and Mark Jones i shook my head in surprise when they signed them to deals this offseason thankfully no money was guaranteed.

Lol saw that coming, but he was FTW during pre-season. Still pissed about keeping Henry though.
