Winston-Salem, North Carolina (AP)-- In cold, wet conditions at BB&T Field, the upstart Baylor Bears started their season off well with a big win over ACC power Wake Forest.

Both teams started the season on equal footing at 0-0 but that would quickly change as sophomore quarterback Robert Griffin III of the Bears drove his team down the field for an easy touchdown run by third stringer Jarrod Salubi. In fact, touchdowns were not hard to come by in the first frame as each team scored twice to send the game deadlocked at 14 into the second quarter.

"We knew going into quarter number two our 'D' needed to stand up and make some stops on [Wake Forest QB Riley] Skinner or else we were done." Baylor coach Art Briles said after the game.

The defense would not dissapoint as, in the midst of breaking up Skinner's first incompletion of the game, Bears junior corner Antareis Bryan came up with the football for Baylor's first interception of the season. Bryan would also add another interception in the fourth quarter off a batted ball that just missed hitting the turf.

"Obviously it felt great to get those picks but I know I need to work harder if I want to be considered elite." Bryan said.

Indeed, the corner opposite Bryan, Dominique Criss, had so much trouble covering slippery Deacons wideout Jordan Williams, that Bears defensive coordinator Brian Norwood had to assign another cornerback, Clifton Odom, to help the struggling Criss in coverage. Williams would burn the pair for 8 catches and 135 yards as Skinner's main target.

Lost in all the offensive fireworks and star power was Baylor's junior tailback Jay Finley who had one of the most quite 200 yard rushing games in recent memory. One of the many highlights the back produced was a fantastic 65 yard touchdown off of a failed option. He finished with 207 rushing yards on only 20 carries.

"It felt great to be out there again playing football and I hope I can have this kind of success all year." Finley said.

Thanks in part to Finley's gigantic effort and Skinner's four turnovers, the Bears would survive a grueling game and win 31-27 after a late Skinner rushing touchdown moved it closer.

"We could do much better but nobody is perfect and we'll take a result like this every time if it means a W in the win column." Briles said.

The Bears return to Waco this week to prepare for their home opener Saturday against the Connecticut Huskies and their All- Big East linebacker Scott Lutrus.

Week 3: Connecticut @ Baylor Preview

What to watch for- Connecticut

-Zach Frazer. Taking over from the graduating Tyler Lorenzon, Frazer's play has been erratic this season, if he doesn't improve look for him to be replaced by sophomore Cody Endres.
-The receiving corps. At least Frazer has some good targets in Kashif Moore and Brad Kanuch but to unleash these talents, Frazer has to first get the ball to them.
-Linebacking 101. The Huskies boast perhaps the best linebacking corp in the conference with Scott Lutrus, Lawrence Wilson and Sio Moore, it will be hard for Jay Finley to match his 200 yard performance with these guys on the field.

What to watch for- Baylor

-Legs. Facing a tough defense will cause the Bears to rely more on their running game than against Wake Forest, how they do will likely decide the result of the game.
-Joe Pawelek and Jordan Lake. The defenses two stars combined for 9 tackles against Wake Forest which left both looking for more, expect a big game from both stars.
-Home game. The Bears play their first home game of 2009 so expect them to show the home crowd they are for real with a big performance against a weak Huskies side.
