BRONX, NY-- Most teams would be pleased with a 53-31 record after 84 games while playing in the toughest division in baseball.

Not the New York Yankees.

Last week, while in the middle of a 9-1 record in their past 10 games, the Yankees traded for two star relief pitchers to strengthen a relitively weak bullpen unit when they traded for former All-Stars J.J. Putz and Joel Zumaya.

Putz, June 26, announced that he was not happy in the City by the Bay upon his arrival. Two weeks later he is back in the 'City that Never Sleeps', this time in Pinstripes. The former Mariners closer is expected to be a set up man for closer Mariano Rivera until the Future Hall of Famer retires.

Zumaya, a former top prospect in the Tigers system, has been plagued by injuries his past two seasons and was labeled expendable in the offseason by Tigers G.M. Dave Dombrowski. The Yankees landed the fireballer for prospect Austin Jackson, named by Baseball America as the top prospect in the Yankees lineup.

"I'm glad that two great players like [Joel and J.J.] were available, we think that they provide an immediate upgrade and I believe they can lead this team to a championship." Yankees G.M. Brian Cashman said after the team's 4-3 win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday, a game in which Zumaya picked up the win, his first in Pinstripes.

Yankees caught cheating, Jays clinch playoff spot

NEW YORK, NY (AP) -- When Cito Gaston got the call he was sitting on the porch San Antonio, Texas home reading the newspaper not realizing that what he was about to hear would be on the front page of that very newspaper the next day emblazoned with the headline "Yankees caught cheating, disqualified from the playoffs"

What that meant of course for Gaston, was that he needed to get to Toronto as soon as possible to inform his players, who were cleaning out their lockers, to repack them and prepare for a trip to the West Coast where the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim would play host to them in the American League Division Series.

"I was shocked, dumbfounded, whatever word you want to use that's what I was," Gaston told reporters yesterday, "The first thing I did was call J.P. [Riccardi, Jays GM] and tell him to call all the guys and tell them to come back up."

The reason for Gaston's surprise was due to the heartbreaking loss the Jays suffered in the season finale at the hands of a walk off two run home run off the bat of Orioles third baseman Melvin Mora that left them in a dead heat with the Yankees after the season's final game. However, because the Yankees had won the season series handily, Jays managemant and players thought that their season had been heartbreakingly cut short, until the call that is.

According to various reports, a clubhouse raid by an FBI drug team yielded vast amounts of steroids and Human Growth Hormone that according to one unnamed source, the team had been using all year. This raid came in the light of the Alex Rodriguez steroid scandal that took place during Spring Training that placed a dark cloud over the teams head for most of the year.

"These allegations are profound and unfair and the New York Yankees will fight this to the laws greatest extent to prevent a hallowed reputation tarnished." A team spokesman said yesterday.

While this may be just another notch in one of the most infamous era's in baseball history, Gaston sees it as a chance for his team to prove they belong in the playoffs even without the help of the rival Yankees, who forfeit all of their wins this season.

"It feels great for us but obviously with this scandal coming out, baseball is not in the best of shape but that still doesn't make it any less the sweeter."

MLB Playoff Preview:

As the leaves start to drift away from the trees that have borne them all year, major league baseball teams' seasons begin to end as the MLB playoffs dawn, leaving only the best eight standing. Every team in the playoffs, from the curse breaking Chicago Cubs to the surprising small market teams in Toronto and Cincinnati looks to make its mark in the annals of history by taking away the World Series trophy sometime in October. Even if the Commissioner's Trophy was not handed out this season, 2009 will be a bookmarked in baseball histories pages thanks to the scandal in the Bronx involving superstars and a lot of HGH. In fact this is the first year where there is no clear cut team that everyone thinks will win. Everyone has questions that need to be answered, and the team that walks away victorious in the Fall Classic will show those answers were existent, but just hidden.

Chicago White Sox @ Boston Red Sox

Chicago, Boston. Two old fashioned, working class cities that are immersed in sports history. Not only do these two teams share a common name but each has won a World Series recently, with the White Sox winning after the Red Sox in 2005. It is hard to believe that with all the publicity the other Chicago baseball team gets that there is even another team in the same state, much less a team from the same city that is less than four years removed from a World title.

The Red Sox will win if..
That league best offense of theirs continues to flex its muscles against a weak White Sox pitching rotation. Apart from All Star Mark Buehrle, the Sox have mid level talent starting for them that have never experienced the MLB playoffs before. If the likes of David Ortiz, Jason Bay and Mike Lowell can crank out the bats, this series could be over quickly.

The White Sox will win if..
Their offense can compete with Boston's. They certainly have the tools, boasting the likes of Jim Thome, Jermaine Dye, Paul Konerko and Alexi Ramirez in the middle of their lineup, and that doesn't even include 40 home run man Carlos Quentin, who is coming off of an injury.

Prediction:
Red Sox in 4
While both teams offense are top level, Boston has a lot more depth and better pitching which will be the deciding factor in a rather quick four game series.

Toronto Blue Jays @ Los Angeles Angels

This is quite simply a matchup of teams looking to relive their championship glory days. Of course, the Toronto Blue Jays made that amazing push at the end of the year to push the Yankees out of the playoffs while the Angels had the AL West in hand by July. The Jays are looking to bring back memories of 1992-93 when they won back to back championships while the Angels look to relive 2002 when they beat the San Francisco Giants in the Series.

The Angels will win if..
They can keep Adrian Beltre in check. The former Seattle Mariner has batted .378 with 7 home runs and 31 RBIs in 28 career games against the Angels and was a key facet in the Jays' playoff push. If the Angels' starting pitchers can consistently get Beltre out, this series may be in the Angels hands.

The Blue Jays will win if..
They can get the series over with quickly. The Jays' first two starters are solid (Roy Halladay, Scott Richmond) but as you move down the playoff rotation it isn't hard to see that the Jays pitching lacks talent. The trio of Scott Downs, Brian Burres and Casey Janssen have shown glimpses this year but have been extremely inconsistent. This series could get ugly if the Jays take it to a fourth or fifth game.

Prediction:
Angels in 4
The Angels have the advantage in every important category and the Jays simply do not have the pitching depth to compete with this loaded LA team that seems destined for a World Series berth.

Philadelphia Phillies @ Chicago Cubs

Defending World Champions versus 100 year old curse. Something's gotta give right? Even after having their best regular season in years, people are still doubting that the Chicago Cubs have the talent to make the World Series and beat the high powered AL clubs. The Phillies are coming off an interesting regular season in which they beat out the Mets during the last weekend AGAIN, to make the playoffs.

The Cubs will win if..
The top of their rotation plays like it should. With Carlos Zambrano and Rich Harden at the top of your rotation, you should be atop the league but add in Cy Young winner Ted Lilly and you have potentially the best rotation in the majors. Against the high powered Phillies O, they need to bring their best stuff to the mound.

The Phillies will win if..
The Big Three can rebound after a terrible regular season. Ryan Howard, Chase Utley and Jimmy Rollins all had career worst years for their team which led the club to acquire power hitting rookie Josh Vitters from the Cubs at the deadline to take some slack away. If the power can return, this series could tip in the Phillies' favor.

Prediction:
Phillies in 5
Yet again the Cubs don't have enough firepower to take down a legit opponent. The Cubs will most likely take two of the first three games but that middle of the order in Philadelphia is much to cumbersome a load to trust Jeff Samardzija and Sean Marshall to take on in Games 4 and 5.

Cincinnati Reds @ Los Angeles Dodgers

The Big Red Machine rolls into LA with the leagues third best regular season record and with hopes soaring higher than ever. Led by players such as Jay Bruce and Chris Dickerson the Reds look to upset the Dodgers to make their first NLCS in 30 years. Standing in their way is a powerful lineup led by Manny Ramirez and Matt Kemp that looks to win the clubs first championship in 50 years.

The Dodgers will win if..
Manny Ramirez continues to put the team on his back. In the regular season, ManRam was looking to set all kinds of major league records before he missed a month with a lower back strain. However, he looks more energized then ever and looks to take advantage of an inexperienced Reds pitching corps.

The Reds will win if..
Their offense outslugs the Dodgers offense. Even without Adam Dunn the Reds led the league in home runs this year by a fair margin propelled by the breakouts of Jay Bruce and Joey Votto. As long as the Reds' pitching doesn't give up 10 runs a game, the Machine has a chance.

Prediction:
Dodgers in 5
In what could be this years best playoff matchup, two of the leagues best offenses square off for a chance to make it to the NLDS. The X Factor in this series could be what teams pitching performs the best, and by best I mean giving up less than 8 runs a game.
