This, and honestly as long as the PS4 has Netflix and other video streaming options I don't really care about what streaming options the next XBOX will have. I'm concerned about games. I also think it'll be hard for M$ to go all in on the multimedia stuff with the rise of smart tv's and things like the Roku box which are very cheap with the prices ranging from $50-$100.

The Roku box I bought for the lady for Christmas was only $24.99. Most people prefer the "all-in-one" box though.

What's the problem here? Thosethings are awesome! Are you trying to tell me you don't love breaking out a calculator very time there's a sale on Xbox Live. 480 points for I Am Alive? That will leave me with 320 points? What can I buy with that? Nothing you say? Well, I'll just buy more points then! Yes!

There are in the business of making money, hence why there are ads on the dashboard, MS points, subscription fees, ect, ect. I think it is very hard to make money with these things. Unless you go really cheap like nintendo (well the WiiU is suffering) or get really lucky with the Wii it is so hard to turn a profit. Or you can fuck up like Sony...over priced, 1 year late, shitty PSN until last few years.

Sony seems to be going back to the gamer roots with hopes that it will make them successful but it is not a guarantee. Gamers are a small feisty group. M$ seems to be going with a very formulaic way doing business and are trying to reach out to the masses and take control of the living room. Games will just be a part of that.

This is where the PC and steam box might come in and take gamers away. Honestly what I love about my PC is that I dont need to deal with MS or Sony. The game is an icon on my desktop, I click it and boom 10 secs later I am gaming. NO BULLSHIT dashboard, no ads, no 10 min long updates...just my games.

I think the PC will be a bigger part of gaming this generation. Especially since it is much easier to build and buy PCs these days. Steam and Origin make it pretty simple to play the games as well.

I mean literally when I click on Most Wanted on my desktop...I am racing in 10-15 secs. Lets see if the new xbox and PS4 can do this as well because right now the xbox takes a while and god forbid you need an update on PSN.

For me its not a bother theyre trying to make money. Everyone is. Its the fact everything they do is either a cheesy way to do it or extremely dated and short sighted. This isnt 2006 Roku/Apple/Android/Smart TV and BR etc didnt exist then Netflix/Amazon were in there infancy. You really have to do something dynamic now to get people to get there media from you. EX. I looooove my Kinect (seriously) its the easiest way Ive ever had to watch stuff and navigate. But for Netflix I have to use my Apple TV or BD for movies I really want to watch..why ? Because Xbox dumbs down the quality of all other competing video services to 720P wtf kinda shady shit is that ?? Is that REALLY going to make me say ugh Ill buy or rent it from Zune instead ? Fuck no its just going to alienate me from your stupid service.
Not to mention all the little things xbox 1 did or were promised for 360 like substituting MP3s on your HDD for in game sounds and tracks or being able to send game saves to my friends etc little shit that would have endeared me to the console just never came to be for $ reasons.

My only loyalty to Xbox is because of GOW and I think PS controllers are shitty for me. They really need something "cool" and dramatic for me to pay attention the same way I used to. There stupid Win8 variation problems highlights MS' ineptitude and lack of foresight.

Thse are all great points JMS. I know Louis CK made a great point of how we are such a "Now!" scoiety but I can't help it. Turning on my Xbox and waiting a minute, minute and half just for the dashboard to boot up seems so archaic and slow. Trying to check out new releases in the PSN store and waiting a close to minute for that to load is also ridiculous. I'm trying to spend money assholes!

Sony seems like they are heading in the right direction with the PS4, with what basically sounds like you're just keeping it in sleep mode and at the touch of a button you're instantaneously back to gaming. Just like my Vita. That is one of my favorite features of that thing. I never really have to turn it off. Just tap the power button and put it into sleep mode and tap it again to pick up right where I left off, whether that is hours or days later. Hopefully they make good on that promise. We don't know what MS plans on doing but that "always on" thing has me a bit concerned. If it's "always on" and just means that you just have to wake it up, like Sony is talking about, great. If it has to be always connected to the internet, not great.

I also have not liked, and it;s obviously no secret around here, the direction MS has been taking this generation. All they care about is what makes them more money and how they can monetize each and every square inch of the 360. Now I know this is a business and that is the number one objective, but when you're constantly screwing over your consumers with ads, funny money meant to confuse them, "free DLC" hoping to trick you into spending more money, harsh restrictions on Live, etc you're going to force people away. Sony lagged behind for quite some time this generation but they have been working hard, at least it seems, to be more customer friendly, the opposite of what M$ is doing. They still offer a free online service. They then upgraded that service with the optional PS+ that gives you benefits far and away above anything that Live gives you. They offer far more flexibility to developers. They have several free-to-play games. They let you use ACTUAL FUCKING MONEY to make purchases for chrissake. What a novel idea!

I hope MS goes against all these rumors and ends up putting out a console that I will want. I guess we'll find out next month. I just hope it isn't more Kinect, more tv programming, more subscriptions, etc. I have a feeling it will be but I hope I'm wrong.

More than likely I'll be getting one not too far after launch unless Forza Motorsport 5 is just abismal (which I highly doubt). However, unless Microsoft pulls a 180 and shows us something halfway gamer focused, I probably wont do much gaming on it outside of the racing sims. Sony seems to have given the consumers what they want, a gamer focused console that happens to have some nice media additions in the background and not forcing stupid crap.

Exactly. It's all marketing and manipulation. It;s easy for someone to think that 400 points is somehow less than $5.00, but not 4000 being less than $50.

Remember when they said that they were aware of "possibilities" that their points may be confusing to some people and were looking into changing the system to actual dollars? LOL. I'm sure they thought about that for a whole half second.

Some Next Xbox details from Paul Thurrott

Here’s what I know about the next Xbox (along with some clearly-identified conjecture).

Early announce. The initial reveal date was pushed back from April 24 to May 21 so that Microsoft could better position the device against the PlayStation 4, which Sony announced in late February.

Full (end user) announce. Microsoft will fully reveal details about the next Xbox, including the launch lineup of games, on the eve of the E3 tradeshow in early June 2013.

Developer announce? It appears that Microsoft will discuss the next Xbox developer platform at the Build conference in San Francisco in late June, based on clues on the Build web site.

Launch. The next Xbox will launch in early November 2013.

Windows 8 Core. The next Xbox is based on the "Core" (base) version of Windows 8. This suggests a common apps platform or at least one that is similar to that used by Windows 8, and further than Microsoft could open up this platform to enthusiast developers. (That last bit is supposition on my part.)

Price. Microsoft will initially offer two pricing models for the console, offering a standalone version for $499 and then a $299 version that requires a two-year Xbox LIVE Gold commitment at an expected price of $10 per month.

No entertainment box. Microsoft originally planned to offer both a “full” version of the next Xbox (with video game playing capabilities) and a lower-end entertainment-oriented version, codenamed “Yuma,” that did not provide video gaming capabilities. But plans for Yuma are on hold and no pure entertainment version of the next Xbox will appear in 2013 (or possibly ever).

Blu-ray. The next Xbox will include a Blu-ray optical drive.

Internet-connected. The next Xbox must be internet-connected to use. This is source of the “always on”/“always online” rumors and isn’t as Draconian as many seem to believe.

Another Xbox 360. Microsoft will also deliver a third generation Xbox 360 console this year that will be significantly less expensive than the current models. The new 360 is codenamed “Stingray,” but it’s not clear if this device is required because the next Xbox isn’t backwards compatible, or because Microsoft simply wants a low-cost entertainment box alternative. (A third possibility, and to be clear these possible reasons are all speculative: The 360 simply has life left in it and with dwindling component prices in the 8 years since the original launch, the firm can still make money selling such a device.)

Not that this is even worth talking about until the 21st, but the latest rumors are that it will have a system similar to PS4, where the publisher gets to make the call on that.

This is business strategy 101 and a very good strategy in that. By taking away a dollar amount frame of mind and replacing it with a non-monetary representation, percentages of sales go up drastically.

Xbox 720 has DVR-like video capture?

Microsoft's next Xbox will feature DVR-like video capture capabilities, according to sources speaking with Polygon. In a similar way to the PlayStation 4, the confirmed-but-unannounced next-generation Xbox will reportedly allow players to capture and share video highlights of gameplay. These video clips can then reportedly be sent to friends through social networks like Ustream, YouTube, and Facebook.

According to Polygon's sources, the next Xbox will capture and record gameplay in the same way that a DVR would, allowing users to go back and pick out desirable pieces of footage. This function can reportedly be turned on or off and can even be set to automatically record when specific in-game events take place, like headshots.

The PS4 asset sharing features are made possible through the DualShock 4's "Share" button, though Polygon's sources had no indication of how such an offering might work on the next Xbox. Details are still being considered and finalized, they said.

The site's sources have also indicated that Microsoft will retool the Achievement system for the next Xbox, allowing developers to add more achievements to a game after launch without the need for downloadable content.

"This is designed specifically to allow developers to tweak player behavior, perhaps urging players to check out specific areas of a game or get past a difficult spot," the site reports. "Next-gen achievements can also be tied to broader events, like a weekend challenge or a communal goal, like contributing a set number of kills to the bigger goal of 10,000 kills over one weekend."

Lastly, Polygon's sources added to others in saying that the next Xbox will feature some sort of an always-online requirement. This feature is aimed at supporting the "suite of non-gaming entertainment" applications that will reportedly launch with the console and also as an anti-piracy measure. Ultimately, however, the decision to require an Internet connection will be left up to individual publishers, the sources said.

Microsoft announced this week that it will hold a press event on May 21 at the company's headquarters in Redmond, Washington to "give you a real taste of the future."
