PSU Penalties: $60 Mil Fine, 4-Year Bowl Ban, 40 Schollies Over 4 Years, Wins Vacated

Maybe, but I don't know how willing the NCAA will hand them out. Alabama lost 21 scholarships over 3 years. USC lost 30 over 3 years. Ohio State lost 24 over three years (15 self imposed, 9 more tacked on by the NCAA). I think 24-27 over 3 years will be the number. I don't see them going much more than 3 years out of precedent and this definitely lies somewhere around the OSU/USC landmark in terms of compliance.

Also, the 3+ year post-season ban would again be the biggest factor. Alabama got 2 years, USC 2 years, Ohio State 1 year. Anything more than 2 years would be extremely painful.

This was described as "unprecedented" though. That to me means that they are not going by a prior benchmark or litmus test to determine punishment. That is why I think this will be pretty damaging.

There is no way you can take away football this year, that would be absurd, it's too close to the season and it's not fair to the 100 kids on the team and the employees/staff who did absolutely nothing and have nothing to do with this.

It's disturbing to me, the prevailing thought that seems to exist that "they" (despite the fact that nobody can even pinpoint who exactly "they" at this point, since "they" are either in prison, about to be in prison, or dead) must be punished, and punished as hard as possible, and fuck anybody left in the wake. I'm still not understanding how punishing hundreds, if not thousands of people who did nothing wrong somehow brings justice to anybody. It makes no sense, but it seems as though as a society we are more concerned with punishing ideas, words, etc. People who didn't care about PSU football 9 months ago, and will likely move on to the next tabloid scandal and forget about this soon enough, want "them" to pay (again, who?), regardless of who else gets destroyed in the wake.

Killing the football team will result in killing other sports, which means hundreds of people lose jobs from coaches to trainers to admin to employees like groundskeepers, concessions, janitors, maintenance, etc. Businesses will close, people who work for those businesses will lose their jobs, there will be no jobs to replace those jobs, people will lose their homes, this is far reaching and real, and its shocking to me that people are so casual about it.

Punish the program, take away their profits, fine, whatever. Napalming an entire town and hurting as many people as possible changes nothing, besides satisfying a bloodthirsty mob who isnt even sure who they are really mad at, here. Do you think the JoePa statue gives a fuck if you take away football? How about the buildings, the bricks? The letters 'PSU'? Is wiping out the football program really punishing the people responsible? Or is it just punishing a bunch of people who are just as disgusted with kid rape as you are? Do kids get untouched if Penn St plays football? I mean, what are we accomplishing here? Nothing.

Yeah, I am not advocating that. I was just posting my thoughts based off of the reports/speculation about what the punishment might include. I stated earlier that local businesses that had no involvement in the scandal would be hurt by a suspension of the program.

Sorry, I quoted you, and then ranted, but I was actually agreeing with you.

I think "unprecedented" basically refers to punishing the university and program for something that didn't give direct competitive advantage, not necessarily the extent of the punishment. It will be interesting, though.

the NCAA is using a old rusty screwdriver on Penn St. PSU may as well shut the program down for a decade if these early reports are true.

This is what i'm thinking.

This is the NCAA crossing a line, so they need to make it clear that this was an odd set of unique circumstances which is why they are acting. The problem, is we can't have the NCAA sticking their nose in whenever a coach gets a DUI or somebody commits a crime outside the auspices of sport, because to me thats bullshit. The NCAA should be worried about the silly little games they oversee, and leave the big boy stuff to the proper authorities.

Absolutely on the bold.

You can't take the season away from these kids. You just can't.

Announce whatever you are going to announce and start it next season. Give the entire team a year to figure out their next step, and let these seniors play their final season.

Right. We'll start caring about this later. It's the humane thing to do for everyone. Football is more important, besides.

Wait a second, that's how we got into this mess!

That's a possibility and I guess that is where I should not interpret tone through text. However, read somewhere that Emmert acted so quickly because he felt so strongly. Either way, I hope for a fair punishment for the university. This is a situation where the innocent are left holding the bag, but, that doesn't mean that the institution does not, in some way, receive punishment. With that being said, that is why this situation is so delicate. When it comes down to it, you are going to have people criticizing what is decided. When that happens, I have learned that you have to do what you think is best. Simple as that. You have to look at the situation, the variables, the people involved and realize that whatever you do...it's going to be criticized. Do what you think is fair and what also sends a message of zero-tolerance for actions such as this. Just try to limit the collateral damage as much as possible and provide avenues of remedy for those affected.

Sweeping child abuse under the rug is not quite the same as letting some guys with no connection to those events and no other options as to where they could play this year play some games that count.

they have already said their wont be a death penalty. imo, taking away bowl games and scholarships is a fake punishment only to settle public perception. losing scholarships means nothing to a major university like this. losing bowl games will sway recruits, but its not the harsh penalty people think it is. PSU fans will goto PSU regardless. you are either loyal or your not....some will jump, but most wont because they love and dream of going to that school.

So then come the loss of revenue from those bowls. this is an absolute joke because the revenue will be made up by boosters who will want to support the school. they will provide support above and beyond because they want to make sure their beloved alma mater lands ok.

Latest update from 20 minutes ago. It sounds like it is going to be pretty bad.

Charles Robinson (yahoosports.com) said:
The NCAA is set to levy the first presidential sanctioning in the association’s history on Monday when it will impose what one source termed “significant” and “staggering” penalties against the Nittany Lions' football program in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky scandal, Yahoo! Sports has learned.

Two sources with knowledge of the Penn State penalties said NCAA president Mark Emmert will announce Monday that he is personally sanctioning Penn State after receiving approval from the association’s Division I Board of directors, which is comprised of 22 college presidents and chancellors. One source told Yahoo! Sports Emmert’s sanctions will include a “multiple-year” bowl ban and “crippling” scholarship losses.

The move will mark a first in NCAA history, in which the president will invoke a defense of the NCAA’s constitution as part of his reasoning for taking the unprecedented steps. The moment is groundbreaking in that Emmert is circumventing typical NCAA process and moving forward without an investigation by his enforcement staff. However, Emmert is expected to detail that the action is backed by a special provision allowing such a step if he receives approval from the NCAA’s board of directors. A source told Y! Sports the NCAA is prepared to defend the lack of an investigation by focusing on the Freeh Report, and Emmert’s determination that the report provided actionable evidence.

Emmert's discussion of defending the NCAA’s constitution is expected to focus at least in part on Article 2.4 of the NCAA’s constitution, which Emmert excerpted in his letter to Penn State on Nov. 17, 2011. In that letter, Emmert cited the passage that “for intercollegiate athletics to promote the character development of participants, to enhance the integrity of higher education and to promote civility in society, student-athletes, coaches, and all others associated with these athletics programs and events should adhere to such fundamental values as respect, fairness, civility, honesty and responsibility. These values should not only be manifest in athletics participation, but also in the broad spectrum of activities affecting the athletics program.”

Emmert added in that letter that such principles “are the bedrock to the foundation of intercollegiate athletics; and the membership of the Association has made clear through the enactment of relevant bylaws that they are expected to be respected and followed.”
Emmert will announce the sanctions at a news conference 9 a.m. Monday at NCAA headquarters in Indianapolis.

Punish the innocent, uproot the lives of a hundred 19-year olds, that'll show "them"!

Penn State as an institution and the culture of central PA goes far beyond the firing and death of Joe Paterno, the sentencing of Jerry Sandusky, the firing of staff, and the firing of some other staffers. Just by putting a new coat of paint on the place, doesn't wipe the slate clean of decades worth of cultural establishment. The entire Penn State culture needs an enema and hiring some new guys and taking down a statue isn't going to do that.

I don't think Warner or I have said anything contrary to that.

Speaking personally, to me this is the very definition of lack of institutional control because it seems like the PSU football office had a huge hand in the way that school was run. And had the Freeh report been released last Fall or some time before spring practices I would be all for going after the current football team. After this season I hope the NCAA hits PSU and hits them hard.

But right now we're about a month away from the start of the CFB season and the people most hurt by levying any immediate bowl bans or the like would be a bunch of people who had no association with PSU at the time the incidents happened.1
