They chose to look the other way to avoid tarnishing the reputation of the school. It was their actions that allowed children to be raped by a man who worked as part of their program and also allowed him to continue to rape children after he retired from the program.

perhaps if the president of the school and paterno did not look the other way and allow these rapes to continue, then maybe the lives of children could have been spared what i can only imagine was torture

Administration hid the a pedophile. They should shut down football at Penn St. Let all the current players transfer, let Bill O'Brien and coaching staff leave. The fans can go cheer on the Steelers. There was a loss of institutional control. They should vacate all of Joe Pa's wins since the incident first occured for sure. Fuck that rumored punishment is spot on imo.

ESPN had a source stating that it was at the least on par with the death penalty due to everything included.

At the end of the day, regardless of what those kids do, the identifiable and punishable issue is that the administrators placed in charge of these programs ignored these issues for the sake of the program. The football team is what led to the coverup and the football program is going to have to be punished. Yes its a shitty stick for the kids there and people who have taken jobs after the fact but there are usually things in place to fix some issues. Players will be able to go elsewhere. You can't honestly expect that they get slapped with a 1-3 year bowl ban b/c JoePa looked the other way at children being molested to keep his football program moving forward. It may be the parent in me but because Penn State trusted him to make these calls and he didn't make the right ones, I would not the slightest sad for the university if it doesn't field a team for the next several seasons. That's not going to happen but the school deserves every bit of what they get.

if those punishments are true, this goes beyond punishing the football team and the school, it will cripple the local economy and likely have huge repercussions on the academics of the institution as well... my point is that the NCAA is on a slippery slope, and them establishing this precedent is a scary thought...

also, if you go back and look at my first post in this thread, you will see what i think the NCAA should do with PSU, b/c again, punishing people there now (to the severity of the rumored punishments) for something that happened in the past (no matter how reprehensible) is inexplicable... if they do that, they arent just killing a football team, they are killing an entire athletic department, university and town...

One thing that gets lost in all of the debate about what is, or isn't, going to happen to PSU is the legal ramifications. Doing more research, the statement of the penalties being "unprecedented" stems from the fact that Emmert is invoking a provision in the NCAA constitution that provides him the authority to hand down punishments w/out a formal NCAA investigation if he is given permission by a special committee.

In a letter to PSU officials, Emmert made clear that he would invoke this clause (herein known as rule 2.4) due to the scale of the accusations, crimes, etc. However, the clause does not lay out examples or trigger events that would allow this type of action by the NCAA President. Only that he is given permission, based off of the interpretation of 2.4.

In plain english, the NCAA has debated with itself on whether or not it could use this provision/rule/clause to decide the fate of PSU. PSU has the option to simply bend over and accept...OR...they can file for an injunction against the ruling and make their case for a formal investigation via the court system. Me thinks that this issue will not be put to rest after tomorrow. If the penalties are that severe, I can't think that PSU would sit idly and allow it. However, in the interest of public appeasement, they may.

as for the self sanctions, all of this has moved very quickly, far faster than any other NCAA investigation has before, and with all the turnover within the AD, board of governors (or trustees, w/e PSU has), as well as waiting for the Freeh report, they didnt really have a chance to self impose sanctions...

these penalties wont just hurt the football team, they will kill off ALL SPORTS at PSU, and like i've said countless times before, b/c this is a major land grant institution institution, the flagship school of the state and is located in a small town in the middle of nowhere, this will likely cripple the economy of State College, thus causing much more severe damage then it should...

The local economy is only there because of the success of the football team. They were on a slippery slope already by just being based on something as up and down as sports. Why is it so scary? Do you want coaches to be able to get away with rape and molestation of children and using their positions of power, established by these said towns and local businesses to continue to do so, in the name of sports, all in the name that people in the future cannot be harmed. The university had the power to stop it and failed to do so.
