The local economy is only there because of the success of the football team. They were on a slippery slope already by just being based on something as up and down as sports. Why is it so scary? Do you want coaches to be able to get away with rape and molestation of children and using their positions of power, established by these said towns and local businesses to continue to do so, in the name of sports, all in the name that people in the future cannot be harmed. The university had the power to stop it and failed to do so.

lets get something clear Sandusky was not a coach when the rapes happend at least the reported ones Joe pa raped no one no other coaches raped anyone the issue is Sandusky kept his office and used facilities knowingly by all the administration which should hurt the administration it should hurt the college and there should be huge penalties but what does taking a season away do... there should be administrative penalties

No one has said Paterno raped anyone, Sandusky WAS a coach there when this happened and from what I understand of it, may have been what led him into retirement. He continued to molest children on campus after he was a coach and Coach Paterno knew about this and still did absolutely nothing. Joe Pa had the knowledge of what Sandusky was doing, never tried to keep him out or even try to keep him away from the kids at the very least. JoePa may not have molested anyone but is personally responsible for this as well.

Well I wanted to just make that clear and as of right now there is no reported molestations during his coaching time it seems to be after his coaching time though I do believe there were some during his coaching time technically there has been none and I really some what despise Joe pa for this but this is an administrative case and the penalties should go to the administration do you at the least agree with that

State College and the nearing populace is over 150,000...so let's not make it to to be like the NCAA is wiping out a town with half a million people. If the penalties are this serious that PSU becomes a ghost town, sucks for them. Let's be honest, something has to be done. Without PSU gripping this shit by the balls, it leaves an outside entity to and the NCAA is taking the serious route if what's being reported is true.

I think it's too much, too, but it's no crime. The institutional psychology has to be broken and this extreme method is one way.

One thing that gets lost in all of the debate about what is, or isn't, going to happen to PSU is the legal ramifications. Doing more research, the statement of the penalties being "unprecedented" stems from the fact that Emmert is invoking a provision in the NCAA constitution that provides him the authority to hand down punishments w/out a formal NCAA investigation if he is given permission by a special committee.

In a letter to PSU officials, Emmert made clear that he would invoke this clause (herein known as rule 2.4) due to the scale of the accusations, crimes, etc. However, the clause does not lay out examples or trigger events that would allow this type of action by the NCAA President. Only that he is given permission, based off of the interpretation of 2.4.

In plain english, the NCAA has debated with itself on whether or not it could use this provision/rule/clause to decide the fate of PSU. PSU has the option to simply bend over and accept...OR...they can file for an injunction against the ruling and make their case for a formal investigation via the court system. Me thinks that this issue will not be put to rest after tomorrow. If the penalties are that severe, I can't think that PSU would sit idly and allow it. However, in the interest of public appeasement, they may.

Nevermind, just read that Penn State does not intend to appeal any discipline handed down from the NCAA.

The lack of an NCAA Division 1 football team is by no means going to cripple the school. How many land grant universities exist and thrive without a top tier athletic program? I know of a few, some even without football teams altogether. Should we also go back to giving out incredibly bad loans to people who can't afford them so millions of people, who relied on construction of new homes can go back to work again?

The problem is the town thrived off of football since 1968 all the money is made by football if you have actually been to the town you would understand but I don't think you have so you can't grasp the magnitude of this in terms of the economy

Yes there is. The molestation dates back to 1998. He was employed through 1999/2000 season. And since his conviction there is more coming out stating that it goes back to the seventies.

Not sure how I'd feel if I wasn't a PSU fan. I might have been on board with what Paterno's role was before the Freeh report, although I think even the most ardent Paterno detractor had no idea he played such a big role.

As a PSU fan after the Freeh report my eyes finally were opened to the to the complete indifference and utter disregard for the victims and Sandusky's actions, I'm ashamed and disgusted by it. Watching that team running out of that tunnel meant something to me when Paterno led them out. Now I'm not sure if I could watch a game. However I do plan to stand behind the university while they pick up the pieces and one day hopefully move on from this.

However I don't believe the NCAA should be in an actionable position here. Not because they could bring down the football program, but because I'm not sure how a bowl ban, a reduction in scholarships, or even shutting the program down for a year brings any justice to those kids. How do you come up with that sentence? Why put the fate of the football program in the fore front when doing just that was the reason why Sandusky's deeds were hidden.

THis is something that should be dealt with in the courts. From the criminal charges being faced by said admins, to the numnerous civil suits that will be in the works. IMO the NCAA is ill equipped to hand out the proper justice in regards to the sexual abuse of children, and trying to punish these crimes by instituting sactions to a football team is at best arbitrary and at worst insulting.

their football team is one of the top revenue generators in the country, which directly funds their other athletic programs, as well as bringing in donations from boosters/alumni to the academic side of the school, which allows them to pay for speshul skool stuffs... if you think these punishments wont have an effect on their endowment/donations/etc, you are quite the mouthbreather and can not see the big picture, so readjust your focus and get back to me...

as for the land grant argument, look at the list of the schools and tell me how many are the flagship institutions of their respective states, as well as how many are relatively successful football programs at the FBS or FCS level (damn near all of them by my count)...

I am trying to make the point the football program should not be punished the administration should be the people with the football program have nothing to do with the issue the administration is at fault punish them. Yes I may be some what biased because I love Penn State but I will not DEFEND them because morally I can not but I will continuee to cheer them on and hope to move on from this travesty.
