VSN Poster of the Year
Do players typically find themselves under used on the collegiate level if they're truly one of the elite talents at their position? I understand Maryland's quarterback situation hasn't been great, but if you have a top ten NFL player on your roster, I think you make sure he gets more than 57 touches in a season.
DHB basically averaged three catches a game and had only one 100-yard contest in 2008, and he needed double-digit receptions in that game to achieve that. In fact, in 38 games at Maryland, he's had only four games in which he went for over 100-yards receiving. He was not among college football's top 100 players in terms of receptions per game, receiving yards per game, or total yards from scrimmage per game this year. He ranked 98th in yards per catch average.
I'm struggling to find a logical argument that DHB was worthy of this selection, and that it wasn't an "Al Davis loves speed" pick, even though apparently he doesn't draft for speed.
Maryland had a ton of players drafted this year...impressive for a nondescript 8-5 team.
I think there are times when an elite player gets underused in college, but only if they are on a powerhouse team. I remember Keith Jackson when he was at Oklahoma...the Sooners just didn't throw the ball enough for him to get great stats, but he was one of the best TEs in the NFL. USC ran the ball a lot in the 1970's, but they had probably the two best wideouts in college football at the time (Lynn Swann & Bob Chandler).
I just don't see how guys at a school like Maryland wouldn't be the focal point of the offense.
