Playoff Passing Attack

AP - Many players and fans around the league are eagerly going to be glued to their television sets as the next playoff Divisonal game goes underway. The reason? Two of the best passing attacks in the NFL are going to collide on the field when the San Francisco 49ers take on the Los Angeles Rams.

Joe Montana has easily earned his place in history as one of the best quarterbacks to ever play the game. There seems to be little doubt that he is the best currently playing, and there's no signs of him stopping. Montana has already earned his way into the record books as he currently sits 3rd all-time on the passing touchdowns list with 269. Only trailing Fran Tarkenton (342) and Johnny Unitas (290). Not to mention he's also 4th on the all-time passing yards leaderboard with 36,698 yards, only down to Tarkenton (45,281), Dan Fouts (43,040), and Johnny U (40,239). Accolades are definately something that Joe Montana has received numerous times throughout his career, but they are well deserved.

Ever since Montana was originally drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the 3rd round of the 1979 NFL Draft he has played with heart. But in the past few seasons he is playing with pride. Many critics are thinking that the 35 year old quarterback is starting to get to the age where he needs to think about retirement. But if 1991 was any indication there is no need as he hasn't slowed down a bit. In 1991 Joe Montana, despite missing a few games due to injury, has accomplished a career-best 32 touchdown season. Not to mention the 2nd best year of his career in passing yards with 3,659 on the year. The 49ers pass attack is better than ever.

The 49ers pass attack was one of the top in the league thanks to some solid performances by Montana and his receivers. Jerry Rice ended the year with 96 catches for 1,301 yards and 15 touchdowns. Menawhile his tandem buddy John Taylor nabbed 80 balls for 1,245 yards and 11 touchdowns himself. However the surprising contribution was from tight end Brent Jones (53 Rec, 404 Yds, 3 Touchdowns) and rookie Yancey Thigpen (53 Rec, 404 Yds). The 49ers can thank this pass attack for their current winning streak that they've had entering into the playoffs. The 49ers have won the last 4 games straight, the final 3 of the regular season (including against the Rams in Week 17), and last weeks nail-biting Wild Card game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Los Angeles Rams have suddenly found themselves named amongst the best passing games in the league ever since they made a great decision in 1986 to acquire Jim Everett. Everett was originally drafted in the 1986 NFL Draft by the Houston Oilers, and was the first quarterback taken in that draft. However due to the contract difference between Everett and the Oilers they were unable to reach an agreement. As a result the Houston Oilers traded the rights to Jim Everett away, to the Los Angeles Rams. Everett got his first starts late in the year and played surprisingly well for a rookie, starting the last 5 games where the Rams went 3-2, and Everett threw for 1,000+ yards, 8 touchdowns, and only 8 interceptions. After a building sophmore season, it wasn't until 1988 where Jim Everett exploded his name onto the top quarterback ranks with a 3,964 yard 31 touchdown season. The Rams pass game has never been the same since.

The Los Angeles Rams were once a run-heavy team but due to acquiring Jim Everett they have now become a pass-heavy team that is dominating defenses around the league. This year Jim Everett had a slight dip in productivity due to a nagging injury that saw Chuck Long start a couple games. However despite that Everett still managed to throw 2,900 yards and 24 touchdowns to only 15 interceptions. The pass game attack of wide receivers Willie Anderson and Henry Ellard are what has really elevated the team's play. However the main surprise was rookie Ricky Watters eventually overtaking the starting running back spot (203 Att, 718 Yds, 8 Touchdowns) but contributing greatly in the pass game with his 50 catches for 351 yards and 2 touchdowns.

This week shall be an offensive explosion as both teams are looking to go head-to-head. One of the more interesting aspects of the game though is that the Rams went to San Francisco to play the final game in Week 17. In that game the 49ers demolished the Rams 54 to 9. We'll see if that has had any psychological effect on the Rams as they take on the 49ers, two weeks later in the Divisional game.

Game Summary: The wild-card San Francisco 49ers game to Los Angeles to take on the Los Angeles Rams in a switch up of the Week 17 match up. In Week 17 the 49ers played the Rams in San Francisco and destroyed the Rams 54 to 9. The vaunted Rams offense was unable to score any touchdowns on the 49ers defense, would this week be in anyway the same?

The game started off uneventfully as both teams were struggling to get their offenses going. In a game that was touted for the offensive prowess of two of the best quarterbacks in the league, there was no touchdowns until 23 seconds left in the 2nd quarter. With that amount of time remaining Joe Montana managed to finally find an open man in a two-tight end set as he hit Jamie Williams for the 10 yard touchdown to put San Francisco up 10 to 3, and the first score on the board. This is where momentum started to churn. On the very next drive Jim Everett was trying to get the Rams down field to at least hit a field goal going into the half, but ended up throwing an interception to Matt Millen, the 49ers then had Mike Cofer hit a long 53 yard field goal to suddenly have 10 points in 23 seconds putting the 49ers up 13 to 3 at the half.

Any hope that the Rams had seemed to be sucked out of them in the 3rd quarter when on the first drive of the 2nd half for the 49ers (after a dud drive by the Rams), the 49ers capped their offensive movement with an 11 yard bulldozing run by Brent Fullwood for the touchdown making it a commanding 20 to 3 game. Another field goal by Mike Cofer and non-stop punting by the Rams led to a 23-3 score going into the final quarter of play.

With the slimmest glimmer of hope left the Rams defense started to stiffen up and fight valiantly. With only 41 seconds left in the game the 49ers ran the clock as much as possible before it reached that mark, forcing them to have Mike Cofer try a 52 yarder that was incomplete. This rare field position for the Rams allowed the offense to final garner a garbage touchdown with 5 seconds left as Ricky Watters walked in from 1 yard out. The game was a horrible outing for Jim Everett who only completed 30% of his passes and had 1 interception on the game. Meanwhile Ricky Watters struggled to only 2.5 yards per carry. It was a mediocre performance from Joe Montana, and a 2nd half surge by Fullwood who was only averaging 1.8 yards per carry prior (ended with 3.0), but a dominating performance by the 49ers defense, that allowed them to easily, for the 2nd time in 3 weeks, stomp through the Los Angeles Rams.

Left: Matt Millen was a big part of the 49ers defense who demoralized the Rams offense early. This interception by Millen stopped any hopes of a late score in the first half.
Right: Matt Millen's interception setup this 53 yard field goal by Cofer to put the 49ers ahead 13 to 3.

Left: Brent Fullwood dove on this 11 yard touchdown run making it 20 to 3 49ers, as they continued to dominate the Rams.
Right: The Los Angeles Rams only touchdown came in the final 5 seconds of the game when Ricky Watters took this wide-open 1 yard toss to the left side. The game would end 23-10 San Francisco, sending the upstart Rams packing.

Game Notes
--------------------------------------------
-I upped the run sliders a little again as Watters had 2.5 ypc, and Fullwood barely got 3.0. That being said they're pretty dang close to 99 each, maybe i'm going to have to start thinking of other things. It's weird, one second you'll have Anthony Toney running 250+ the next Watters for 40 some, etc.

Game Summary: The wild-card Cincinnati Bengals were heading to Buffalo to attempt to take down an offensive power house in the Bills. However the game would turnout completely opposite of expectations.

The first quarter was a defensive battle back and forth as the Bengals made the first strike when youngster Jimmy Spencer intercepted a Jim Kelly pass to set up a 48 yard Jim Breech field goal and give the Bengals the early 3-0 lead at the end of the 1st quarter. In the 2nd quarter however the Bills were quick to strike with a nice drive that was capped off with a 1 yard touchdown pound by Thurman Thomas giving the Bills the lead for the first time tonight, 7 to 3. However on the next Buffalo Bill drive the Bills would get into trouble as Jim Kelly ended up dislocating his shoulder. The injury would keep him out for the remainder of the game, bringing in backup quarterback, Frank Reich.

Boomer Esiason struggled throwing his first pick on the night to Kirby Jackson, but the Bengals got the ball right back when Frank Reich threw an interception to James Francis. This pick once again set up another Bengals field goal as Jim Breech hit it from 54 yards out to make it 7-6 Buffalo going into the half. These two offensive juggernauts surprised the league today with a defensive game. Whether or not the lack of Jim Kelly in the Bills roster has an influence on that will be unknown.

In the third quarter the turnovers kept coming as Kendall Smith muffed a punt return and Bills special teams player, Quinton Jones, ended up scooping the ball up and returning it for an 18 yard touchdown. The score would make it 14-6 Bills with 8:53 left in the 3rd quarter. The Bengals came right back and threw another turnover when Boomer Esiason lobbed an errant pass in the Bills red zone to safety Mark Kelso. In the final quarter of the game the Bengals would once again have to settle for just a field goal from 46 yards out. With only 1:57 left in the game that was the final scoring drive as the Bengals lost to the Bills 14 to 9.

A simple lack of offensive power by the Bengals was their reason for loosing tonight. Not only did Boomer Esiason choke with his two interceptions, but the Bengals defense couldn't take advantage of a Kelly-less Bills team in the second half. The muffed punt returned for a touchdown by Quinton Jones ended up being the big difference maker in the game as both teams struggled offensively outside of the Bills opening 2nd quarter drive. The Bills red zone defense was perfect as they refused to give up big plays in that area forcing the Bengals to have to trade field goals for touchdowns, which is always a loosing formula. Last year the Bengals threw around the excuse that both Boomer Esiason and James Brooks were injured for their playoff game which is why they were one and done. This year, the Bengals had both and both players stunk it up with Esiason's 2 interceptions and 42.4 qb rating, and James Brooks horrendous 1.5 yards per carry average. There are no excuses this time for the Bengals.

Player of the Game
-------------------------------------------
Bills - CB - Kirby Jackson - 6 Tak - 3 Deflections - 1 INterception

Game Pictures
--------------------------------------------
DIV-CIN-vs-BUF-1.jpg

Left: Jimmy Spencer makes the first big play of the game by intercepting this Jim Kelly pass. This interception would set up the first score of the game on a 46 yard Jim Breech field goal.
Right: Boomer Esiason struggled all day long with the pressure that the Bills linebackers and defensive line were getting on him. Here Cornelius Bennett penetrates into the backfield and throws Esiason to the ground.

DIV-CIN-vs-BUF-2.jpg

Left: Thurman Thomas easily walks this touchdown run in from 1 yard out as he goes untouched on the left side toss. Thomas' score would put the Bills up 7 to 3 in the beginning of the 2nd quarter.
Right: In a gasping moment for Buffalo fans Jim Kelly went down with a dislocated shoulder on the 3rd drive of the 2nd quarter. As a result Frank Reich would finish up the game. Luckily for the Bills it appears Kelly will be fine to play next week.

DIV-CIN-vs-BUF-3.jpg

Left: Kirby Jackson managed to intercept this Boomer Esiason pass and return it 16 yards.
Right: However before the Bills could capitalize on the turnover James Francis managed to pick this Frank Reich pass out of the sky and put the Bengals back into field goal range.

DIV-CIN-vs-BUF-4.jpg

Left: Jim Breech hits this 54 yard field goal to put the Bengals within a single point 7 to 6.
Right: Kendall Smith muffs a punt return and Bills special teamer, Quinton Jones, manages to scoop the ball up. He would scamper untouched into the end zone for an 18 yard score to make it 14 to 6 Bills.

DIV-CIN-vs-BUF-5.jpg

Left: Bruce Smith smothers James Brooks, which was an image that was seen all day long. The Bengals run game was horrendous as Brooks only averaged 1.5 yards per carry and was unable to get things going even until the final whistle.
Right: Any hopes of a comeback were halted when once again, Boomer Esiason was intercepted, this time while trying to go for a touchdown that would've tied the game up. Bills safety Mark Kelso managed to intercept the ball and give the Bills the ball back so they could wind down the clock.

Game Notes
--------------------------------------------
-Upped run sliders again as both Thurman Thomas and James Brooks had horrible games. I also dropped the interceptions rating a little bit.

Game Summary: Last year's Super Bowl Champion Phialdelphia Eagles went to Detroit this week to attempt to continue their road to a repeat. The 11-5 Detroit Lions have recently struggled with a quarterback shift from Rodney Peete to Erik Kramer, who seems to be playing well for the Lions team as Sanders carries the offense on his back. Who will be victorious in the final divisional playoff game of the 1991 NFL Playoffs?

The first quarter started off on the wrong foot for the Eagles as cornerback Eric Allen muffed a punt return. Lions linebacker, Keith McCants managed to pick it up and give the Lions great field position at the 12 yard line. From there Erik Kramer managed to playaction and hit Willie Clark on a 1 yard touchdown catch for the first score of the night. However the Eagles managed to make up for their mistake on their very next offensive play. Anthony Toney, who always seems to shine in the playoffs, broke free on a 75 yard touchdown scamper that tied the game up at 7 a piece. Then a few plays later Barry Sanders did not want to be outperformed as he juked his way to a 68 yard touchdown follow up to put the Lions up 14 to 7 in only a 12 second time span.

In the second quarter the Lions emulated the Eagles beginning with Mel Gray fumbling while returning a punt. The resulting fumble was recovered by Hager and eventually led to another Anthony Toney touchdown run on the ensuing drive tying the game back up at 14 a piece. Erik Kramer then tossed his first interception of the night to Jesse Small. Small's turnover would lead to a 41 yard Roger Ruzek field goal to make it 17-14 Eagles. Kramer was quick to forget his mistake as he drove the Lions downfield and capped it off with a 9 yard touchdown toss to Willie Green giving the Lions the lead 21, 17. However Erik Kramer had a bad case of dejavu on his next drive as he threw his 2nd interception, this time to B.Smith who returned it 30 yards giving the Eagles short field position. Yet the Eagles were unable to capitalize on the field position as Randall Cunningham ended up throwing his first interception to Lions linebacker George Jamison.

In the third quarter Eagles tight end Keith Jackson fumbled a caught pass after being hit stiffly by Michael Cofer. William White recovered for the Lions delaying the Eagles scoring. The delay however only lasted one drive as Randall Cunningham ended up throwing a touchdown pass to Mike Quick to make it a 24-21 Eagles game, retaking the lead at the end of the 3rd quarter.

A defensive struggled in the 4th quarter saw both the Eagles and the Lions trading punts back and forth before the Lions managed to have Eddie Murray kick a 48 yard field goal to tie the game up in the final 13 seconds of the game, sending into overtime.

In Overtime the Lions won the toss but were unable to use their momentum to score on the opening drive. A tough decision saw them have Jim Arnold punt it away, but luckily the Lions defense was able to stuff the Eagles. The Eagles were forced to punt when their offense could just barely not penetrate into field goal territory. On the final drive Kramer got the Lions close enough to let Eddie Murray knock in a 52 yard field goal and give the Detroit Lions the 27-24 victory with only 3:52 left in overtime.

Game Notes

-Once again the cpu makes Anthony Toney jesus during the playoffs for some reason. But I still left the sliders as is.

wow this in-depth, great work

Thank you! I tried my best to be as accurate as possible, plus it helps to keep me thinking of it in a more real way. Although unfortunately ever since doing this I find myself sometimes thinking about what these guys are doing in my madden chise when they're brought up in real life. hehe.

Just a few more games, the 1991 off-season and I should be about up-to-date.

Game Summary: The Los Angeles Raiders continue to surprise teams in the playoffs under the lead of backup quarterback, Billy Joe Tolliver. Tolliver and co. went into the playoffs as a 9-7 wild card team but have won two big games against some of the biggest AFC teams in the Pittsburgh Steelers and Houston Oilers. Now they face off against the 14-3 offensive power house, Buffalo Bills. The Bills continue their quest to get to the Super Bowl and will have to go through wild card Los Angeles to go there.

The first quarter started off with the Los Angeles Raiders piecing together a beautiful opening drive. On 3rd down and goal at the 1 yard line the Raiders capped off the drive as Billy Joe Tolliver sneaked in. The touchdown run would put the Raiders up early 7 to nothing, eating a lot of time on the clock. The remainder of the first quarter was a defensive showcase by both teams as they shut down each others offensive units. Four punts later the quarters changed over.

In the second quarter the Bills were trying to open things up in the passing game but Jim Kelly got caught. Raiders linebacker Jeroy Robinson picked off a Jim Kelly pass giving the Raiders great field position on their first 2nd quarter drive on the Bills 11 yard line. With the short field position the Raiders found themselves once again at the goal line. They then proceeded to give the Bills a feeling of deja vu as Billy Joe Tolliver snuck in a second 1 yard touchdown run giving him two rushing touchdowns on the night. The Raiders would then stop the Bills offense once agian, and follow themselves up with a 21 yard Jeff Jaeger field goal drive making it 17-0 Raiders with 1:21 remaining in the opening half. With the Bills feeling the desperation to score before half-time in order to stay in this game Jim Kelley managed to hit Jamie Mueller who pounded into the end zone with only 21 seconds left. The score would finally put Buffalo on the board 17 to 7.

In the third quarter the Raiders continued where they left off with their first drive as Billy Joe Tolliver hit veteran Mervyn Fernandez on a 22 yard touchdown pass to give them a commanding 24 to 7 lead. However on the fourth drive of the third quarter Tolliver made his first mistake by throwing an intercepted pass to Bills linebacker, Cornelius Bennett. With some good field position the Bills managed to make it 24 to 10. However the Raiders would continue their offensive onslaught as Marcus Allen had a 1 yard touchdown drive to cap the final drive of the 3rd quarter and once again give the Raiders a 21 point lead, 31 to 10.

In the fourth quarter the Bills turned the ball over on downs on the opening drive. However it wasn't until the 4th drive that a score occured as Billy Joe Tolliver tossed a 33 yard touchdown pass to Mervyn Fernandez to make it 38 to 10 Raiders. The Bills offense finally decided to come alive in the fourth quarter, unfortunately too little too late. Jim Kelly hit outstanding rookie wide out, Jeff Graham, on an 18 yard paydrit pass. After a missed Jeff Jaeger field goal with 1:53 left the Bills drove down for pride and Kelly scored once again with a 14 yard pass to rookie wide out Raghib Ismail. The touchdown would make it 38-24 with 48 seconds remaining. However a failed onside kick saw the Raiders recover. In a questionable move with 4 seconds remaining the Raiders brought out Jeff Jaeger to kick a field goal on 4th down to run out the clock with the balls air-time, rather than turn the ball over and let Buffalo run it out. However Jaeger actually hit the kick through the uprights instead of just letting it fly for 4 seconds, making the final score 41 to 24 Raiders, in an absolute drubbing.

Game Summary: The San Francisco 49ers have turned up their game in the playoffs as they are entering the NFC Championship game as a wild card playoff team. Meanwhile the Detroit Lions proved their mettle by upsetting the Super Bowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles with a field goal victory, 27 to 24 in the divisional playoff round.

The first quarter of the NFC Championship game started off with some struggling offensive output. Both the 49ers and Lions were unable to puncture into the red-zone are were forced to settle by attempting 50+ yard field goals. Eddie Murray missed the opening drives 54 yard attempt, meanwhile Mike Cofer had no business trying the 55 yarder on the follow up drive. However in the 4th drive of the game the Lions made the first strike as Dexter Carter was running the football and was nailed by Lions linebacker, Keith McCants. McCants caused the ball to be knocked out of Carter's hands and into Kevin Brooks' who returned the ball 20 yards for a touchdown to make it 7-0 Lions with the first points of the game. It wasn't until the next Lion drive that the 49ers finally got rid of the 0 on the scoreboard. Ralph Mojsiejenko nailed a coffin corner punt that put the Lions deep in their own territory. An attempted HB toss run by Barry Sanders ended in failure as Darryl Pollard wrapped him up for a saftey, making it 7-2 49ers and giving them the ball back. The final score of the first quarter came on the last drive as Eddie Murray hit a 45 yard filed goal.

The second quarter started off with a bang as Dexter Carter came in to give Brent Fullwood a breather. On that play Carter then blazed up the middle making tacklers miss on his way to a 39 yard touchdown run that would tie the game up after Fullwood pounded in the 2 point conversion. The next 49er drive would be just as successful as Joe Montana managed to hit Jerry Rice on a 12 yard touchdown pass making it 17-10 49ers. The 49ers scoring onslaught continued after another Jim Arnold punt as Mike Cofer hit a 51 yard field goal to round it out to 20-10. On the final Lion drive Erik Kramer threw an interception to 49ers linebacker Bill Romanowski slowing down an offensive drive.

In the third quarter the San Francisco 49ers continued their offensive assault on the Detroit Lions defense as Joe Montana bombed the football 43 yards to John Taylor who continues to have amazing games in the playoffs. On the very next 49ers drive Brent Fullwood did his best Dexter Carter impression by dashing 53 yards for a touchdown. The score would make it a huge 34-10 deficit in favor of the 49ers. Antoher Jim Arnold punt and the 49ers were marching once more. However Ken Irvin of the Lions decided to stop the offensive juggernaut and intercepted Joe Montana. However they were unable to capitalize on the drive as Erik Kramer threw another interception, this time to Don Griffin deep in 49er territory (9 yard line.) ending the 3rd.

In the fourth quarter San Francisco 49ers decided to coast out their victory as it was nothing but Ralph Mojsiejenko punts. The Lions offense took advantage as Barry Sanders capped off a drive with a 2 yard touchdown scamper, but failed to get in on a 2 point conversion making it 34-16 49ers. Eventually the Lions made it down to the red zone again only to have Erik Kramer throw his final interception to Don Griffin inside the 49ers end zone for the touchback. A turnover on downs later in the final Detroit drive let the 49ers run out of the clock and move to face the Los Angeles Raiders in the Super Bowl!

Right: Barry Sanders punches into the end zone on this 2 yard run with only 6:02 left in the game. The Lions would be unable to convert the 2 point conversion.

CHA-91-SF-vs-DET-7.jpg

Left: The final nail in the ocffin came with 2:18 left in the game as Erik Kramer threw his 3rd interception. This time Don Griffin was in the right place at the right time for his 2nd pick and got the touchback by kneeling. The 49ers would run out the clock.

Game Notes
--------------------------------------------
-Sliders looked good to me. Only thing I was worried about was interceptions but in defense the CPU just had the 49ers CB's make some great plays on the ball instead of horrendous throws by Kramer, so it seemed okay imo.

The Matchup * With commentary from Brian Gumble
RT9-Matchup-SB-SF_vs_OAK.jpg

  • Quarterbacks: Normally this would be unquestionably one of the best quarterbacks in the league, Joe Montana. However, we have to really examine the Raiders Billy Joe Tolliver. Here's a guy who game in due to Jay Schroeder's injury and has turned into the reason that the Raiders are even playing in this game. Throughout the playoffs he's thrown the ball 77 of 130 attempts for 1,137 yards, 8 touchdowns and 5 interceptions for an amazing 92.4 quarterback rating. Montana's numbers may pale in comparison with 751 yards and 7 touchdowns, but his still slightly more efficient completion percentage (60.4% vs. 59.2%) with only 2 interceptions led him to a better 98.2 playoff quarterback rating. If Tolliver was up against anybody else he'd get the nod for his playoff prowess that he has shown, but in this case it goes to Joe. Adv: - 49ers
  • Runningbacks: The 49ers have gone through runningbacks this year due to the departure of Roger Craig. Unable to find an adequate replacement in John L. Williams he got hurt. The 49ers toyed with youngsters Dexter carter and Keith Henderson in the backfield before signing ex-Packer Brent Fullwood. Fullwood has done a serviceable job of starting but is nowhere near the caliber of the Raiders backs. Veteran runningback Marcus Allen had a solid year handling the full-load for the Raiders since Bo Jackson left to Houston. Allen managed to get exactly 1,200 yards on 319 carries with 7 touchdowns. Meanwhile backup Greg Bell added another 322 and 2 touchdowns. The Raiders easily overcome the 49ers in this department.Adv: - Raiders
  • Fullback - While Steve Smith is a solid fullback for the Los Angeles Raiders he is more block-heavy and his stats aren't that impressive with only 139 yards on 55 carries. Not to mention it's hard to overtake one of the best fullbacks in the league in Tom Rathman who not only is an amazing blocker but can get things done on the ground. He only had 68 yards in the regular season but did add a touchdown. However he surprised many with his 27 catch 188 yard 1 touchdown receiving season. Adv: - 49ers
  • Wide Receivers - The 49ers and endowed with some of the top receivers in the league with veteran Jerry Rice being touted as the best receiver in the league he had a solid 1991 regular season with 96 catches for 1,301 yards and 15 touchdowns. Together with John Taylor's 80 catch 1,245 yard 11 touchdown season there was no better duo of top-notch receivers in the league. However the biggest surprise came from the addition of rookie Yancey Thigpen, who may not have cracked paydirt but helped greatly with his 46 catches for 560 yards before missing a few games to injury. Mike Sherrard picked up Thigpen's paydirt slack with 4 touchdowns on only 19 catches and Wesley Carroll rounded out with 1 on 12. The Raiders have a cavalcade of receivers that are fighting to become the #1 on their team, and it appears that there is still no clear answer. Willie Gault led the team with 48 catches for 595 yards and 5 touchdowns, with youngster Tim Brown coming behind iwth 54 catches for 580 yards and 3 touchdowns. Mervyn Fernandez even stayed up there for awhile with 41 catches for 530 yards and 2 touchdowns. With rookies Michael Jackson and Jake Reed already adding to the clutter. Adv: - 49ers
  • Tight Ends - Brent Jones had a solid year for the 49ers in 1991 with his 53 catch 404 yard 3 touchdown season. Compared to Ethan Horton of the Raiders however it was stellar. Horton only had 30 catches for a measly 185 yards and 1 touchdown. Adv: - 49ers
  • Offensive Line - The 49ers have an all-pro line that has helped Montana stay in the pocket all year. The line is led by left tackle Steve Wallace, left guard Guy McIntyre, center Jesse Sapolu, right guard Harris Barton, and filling in at right tackle Tom Ackerman. With young guys like Pat Harlow, and A.Davis rounding the team out nicely. Meanwhile the Los Angeles Raiders are led by left tackle R.Graves, left guard Max Montoya, center Don Mosebar, right guard Steve Wisniewski, and right tackle Bruce Wilkerson. With additions of rookie Erik Williams, D.Turk, and J.Fitzpatrick helping to fill in spots. However despite both teams accolades there seems to be a very slight advantage for the 49ers in this category.Adv: - 49ers
  • Defensive Line - The 49ers have some decent lineman on their team. Centered by defensive tackle Michael Carter with rookie backup Andy Harmon. Meanwhile the ends, Pierce Holt and Kevin Fagan are entering their prime years. Carter had 5 sacks on the year to add to his 46 tackles bu Pierce Holt only had 2. Meanwhile Kevin Fagan had 2 sacks totaling the defensive line starters to a paltry 9 sack total. Meanwhile the Raiders had veteran star Howie Long on left end with a disappointing 3 sack 35 tackle year. Meanwhile right end Greg Townsend had 39 tackels and 4 sacks in comparison. The Raiders starting defensive tackle, Scott Davis, had 4 sacks as well on the year as well totaling their starters to a mediocre 11 sack season. Both teams struggled on the defensive line despite having solid players on their team, but sometimes statistics don't show it all. Adv: - Raiders
  • Linebackers - Starting left outside linebacker for the 49ers in Bill Romanowski, Middle linebacker is veteran Matt Millen with Keith DeLong sniffing down his job from close behind, and right outside linebacker star, Charles Haley. Keena Turner is also backing up Romanowski but got his hands dirty plenty in 1991. The 49ers have a great pair of outside linebackers in Romanowski and Haley who had 93 and 119 tackels respectively, but it was their pass-rush that really helped out with Romanowski garnering 4 sacks and Haley leading the team with 13. Meanwhile the Raiders start Jeroy Robinson at the left side with Aaron Wallace backing up up. On the right side outside linebacker Rickey Hunley will try his best meanwhile the middle is crowded with new addition Ervin Randle, and solid help from Tom Benson, Riki Ellison, and A.Jimerson. The Raiders certainly have depth at middle linebacker but Ervin Randle's 116 tackles 7 sacks were hard to bear. In the 3-4 they managed to includ Benson who had a solid 80 tackle 6 sack year. Hunley had a disappointing 70 tackle 3 sack season and Robinson picked up the pace with 94 tackles for 4 sacks. The Raiders have depth at linebacker but going strictly off of the starters i'll have to give this one to the 49ers. Adv: - 49ers
  • Cornerbacks - The 49ers weak spot all year has been their pass defense, which the Raiders will look to exploit. The 49ers corners are led by Darryl Pollard with Vestee Jackson, Don Griffin, and Eric Davis rounding out the quarter. Vestee was signed and made a surprising impact ending up leading the team with a 42 tackle 7 interception year. Pollard improved greatly over last year and has gotten better but is still struggling as the #1 corner. Meanwhile the Raiders are blessed at corner with two great backs in Terry McDaniel and Lionel Washington. They also have the additional help of Gary Lewis who would easily compete with Pollard for the #1 in San Francisco, but is delegated to #3 in Los Angeles. Easily the Raiders beat out the 49ers in this area. Adv: - Raiders
  • Safties - Two words. Ronnie Lott. Lott practically wins this arguement on his own but eitherway he also has a solid partner in Dave Waymer on the strong side. Lott ahd 97 tackles, 6 sacks, 1 interception in 1991 and will likely make another Pro Bowl. Meanwhile Waymer was no slouch with his 61 tackle 2 pick year despite some nagging injury problems. The Raiders do their best with some top-notch safties in Eddie Anderson and youngster Henry Jones with a capable backup in Solomon Wilcots. Adv: - 49ers
  • Kickers - Mike Cofer struggled in 1991 as he hit 23 of 32 field goals for a 71% rate. However it was his 52 extra points that helped the 49ers more. On the other side there is the Raiders kicker, Jeff Jaeger. Jaeger had a 26 of 38 field goals for 68% season with a nearly 1/2 the extra points of Cofer in 29. Due to the sheer volume of Cofers extra points and the 3% rate improvement i'm giving it to Cofer.Adv: - 49ers

Advantage: 49ers +5

Coach's Corner
==========================================
Coach: 49ers - George Seifert
Gameplan
  1. We need to have our corners step up and cover Tim Brown and Willie Gault, if we can contain the pass game we'll have no problem with the run game.
  2. Billie Joe Tolliver has been on fire in the playoffs, our defensive line and linebackers need to knock that confidence out of him. We're going to blitz early and often to try and rattle his cage and slow down his release.
  3. We must contain Marcus Allen to the inside, don't allow him to bounce it out for a big run, Haley and Romanowski can easily handle that if needed.
  4. Fullwood needs to get going early so that we can keep the defense honest. If he can't get going we'll become one dimensional against a team with very good corners and safties.
  5. Our offensive line is going to have to be on top of their game if they want to compete. With Howie Long, Greg Townsend, and Scott Davis all collapsing in we'll have to do our best to protect Montana.

Coach:Raiders - Art Shell
Gameplan
  1. Get Marcus churning his gears early and plow through a weak 49ers defensive line. We'll have trouble getting past the 2nd level though.
  2. We need to build Tolliver's confidence early try to take a couple shots down field and hope for success. The 49ers corners shouldn't be too much of a problem but the big-game pressure might be for Billie Joe.
  3. We have to stop Montana and pressure him all day, Howie Long and Greg Townsend are going to need to step up and continually get pressure.
  4. Hopefully we can use Ethan Horton to open up the receivers a bit by going to him more than often.
  5. Terry McDaniel is going to have to man Jerry Rice all day long to stop him from becoming an impact player in the game.

Left: In a broken play a desperate Joe Montana tried to toss the ball away to Jerry Rice while scrambling. Montana was nailed by Scott Davis just as he was releasing the football, and an agile Ricky Hunley dug down deep to pick the ball off and give it back to the Raiders for the games first turnover.
Right: Unfazed by his early troubles Joe Montana threw this perfect 25 yard pass to Jerry Rice for the touchdown.

XXV-SF-vs-LAR-2.jpg

Left: Jerry Rice catches the 25 yard pass from Joe Montana and than uses his momentum to fall towards the end zone and score the first points of Super Bowl XXVI making it 7-0 49ers.
Right: Billy Joe Tolliver didn't spot Griffin on the defense as he easily picks this Tolliver pass.

XXV-SF-vs-LAR-3.jpg

Left: Brent Fullwood was proving to be hard to take down for the Raiders defense as he was bowling through defenders. To think the youngster was still a free agent through 3/4's of the regular season before signing with the 49ers due to injury, after a good year with the Packers.
Right: Jerry Rice makes a move and catches Raiders cornerback Lionel Washington off guard. Rice then hit the afterburners and would go untouched 38 yards to the end zone for the second 49er touchdown.

XXV-SF-vs-LAR-4.jpg

Left: Don Griffin is the 49ers X-Factor of Super Bowl XXVI as he once again intercepts Billy Joe Tolliver. This errant pass was picked off after a great drive by Tolliver leading the Raiders into the 49er red zone. But Tolliver tried to force the ball into Willie Gault's hands in the end zone and instead they found Griffin's.
Right: After a Ralph Mojsiejenko punt Tim Brown started to return the punt for the Raiders. However Keena Turner tackled him and at the last second before a part of his body hit the ground Tim Brown coughed up the football. 49ers backup defensive lineman, Larry Roberts, was there to recover it for the team and give them great field position at the Raiders 11 yard line.

XXV-SF-vs-LAR-5.jpg

Left: Capitalizing off of the Tim Brown fumble turnover the 49ers capped off a short 11 yard drive with this 1 yard jog by Brent Fullwood to make it an embarrassing 21-0 49er lead.
Right: The Raiders continued to struggle in the passing game as the 49ers were pressuring Tolliver all day so far. Here Pierce Holt wraps him up for his second sack of the night.

XXV-SF-vs-LAR-6.jpg

Left: Finally shacking off the cob-webs Billy Joe Tolliver does what he does in the playoffs and starts to bring the Raiders back into the game. Tolliver throws the ball on this 12 yard strike to Tim Brown who takes a rough hit from Pollard but manages to hold on for the first Raider touchdown with 9 seconds left in the first half, ending it on a high note for the Raiders.
Right: The first drive of the 2nd half saw the 49ers finally get stopped by the Raiders defense forcing Mike Cofer to settle for a 37 yard filed goal that made the scoreboard read 24-7, 49ers.

XXV-SF-vs-LAR-7.jpg

Left: Tolliver continued to show poise later in the game as he drove the Raiders down on their opening drive of the 2nd half and finished it with a 9 yard touchdown pass to Willie Gault. Gault's catch would bring the Raiders close 24 to 14.
Right: The 49ers decided to finally put the proverbial stake in the Raiders heart in the beginning of the 4th quarter. Brent Fullwood busted out a demoralizing 80 yard touchdown run straight up the middle of the Raiders defense. The touchdown would put the 49ers well ahead 31 to 14 with 10:46 left in the game.

XXV-SF-vs-LAR-8.jpg

Left: As if the 49ers had any reason to doubt themselves and worry about a Raider comeback, Joe Montana tossed his 3rd touchdown pass to Jerry Rice. It was a short 8-10 yard route for Rice but a quick move broke him loose and he bolted 55 yards for the touchdown making it 38-14 49ers.
Right: Fighting merely for pride Billy Joe Tolliver after a turnover on downs drive by the Raiders, ended the game with a 10 yard touchdown pass to rookie Jake Reed. Reed's catch with 1:14 left would make it 41-21 49ers. The Raiders would attempt an onside kick but 49ers fullback, Tom Rathman, recovered it and the 49ers ran out the clock solidifying their Super Bowl victory!

49ers Bring Gold Rush Back To San Francisco!

AP - The San Francisco 49ers are your Super Bowl XXVI Champions! In what is being coined as the Bay Bowl, the unthinkable happened as two cities a mere 350 miles apart would have their representative teams going head-to-head in the Super Bowl.

The Los Angeles Raiders were a wild card team at 9-7 and the San Francisco 49ers were also a wild card team with a 10-6 record. Only 3 wild card teams prior to this season had gone to the Super Bowl. The 1975 Dallas Cowboys who lost 21-17 to the Pittsburgh Steelers. The 1980 Oakland Raiders who beat the Philadelphia Eagles 27-10. With the 1985 New England Patriots finalizing the list in a 46-10 defeat against the Chicago Bears. However this is the first time in NFL history that both teams in the Super Bowl are wild-card playoff teams. The good news was that the Raiders were there just 11 years ago as a wild card team and came out victorious. It gave the Raiders some hope that they could repeat that performance against the San Francisco 49ers and take home another victory. However it was quite obvious from the start of Super Bowl XXVI in the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minnesota, that this was not the Raiders night.

The San Francisco 49ers demolished the Raiders defense with a solid passing performance that was capped off by a surprising run output by Brent Fullwood. With the combination of the two attacks the Raiders were unable to stop a steam-rolling 49er team that just chalked up it's fifth Super Bowl victory in a decade. The San Francisco 49ers dynasty is still rolling with this amazing feat. With a Super Bowl XVI, XIX, XXIII, XXIV and now XXVI Super bowl trophy.

The Super Bowl MVP of Super Bowl XXVI was none other than veteran star wide receiver, Jerry Rice who had the following comments during a post-game interview.

"This is unbelievable! I can't believe it we're now the five time Super Bowl Champions baby! Nobody has ever done that we've now surpassed those Steelers teams! I couldn't have done it without my guy Joe. Joe was there all day with the perfect pass and he air mailed it right into my hands. This trophy is as much his as it is mine. I can't believe it this is wild! This is a dream come true!
~Jerry Rice

These words were true as the San Francisco 49ers are now the first team in NFL history to accomplish 5 Super Bowl victories, surpassing the record of 4 previously held by the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Right: Richard Johnson of the 15-1 Houston Oilers intercepted a Joe Montana pass attempt in the end zone, stopping a potential touchdown play and giving the AFC the ball back with 8:38 in the first quarter.

NFC_vs_AFC_2.jpg

Left: Reggie White was the only player in the Pro Bowl game to get a sack.
Right: Here Joe Montana is seen throwing a laser accurate pass to Jerry Rice.

NFC_vs_AFC_3.jpg

Left: The pass would be caught by Jerry Rice as he split between multiple defenders. Frank Minnifield would collide with Richard Johnson and Ervin Randle was nowhere near fast enough to catch the 49er as he bolted down 67 yards for the first touchdown of the game.
Right: Warren Moon tossed up his 2nd interception in the 1st quarter, this time to Darryl Pollard who returned it a few yards to the NFC's 41 yard line.

NFC_vs_AFC_4.jpg

Left: Joe Montana hooked up with his long-time former teammate, Roger Craig, who is now a Tampa Bay Buccaneer. Craig caught the swing pass from Montana and then dove into the end zone to make it a 23 yard touchdown grab. The score would put the NFC up 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Right: Joe Montana was nailed in the backfield by Oilers defensive lineman, Sean Jones. Meanwhile Oilers defensive tackle, Ray Childress, scooped the fumble up and walked it in from 3 yards out to the end zone for the AFC's first score of the night, 14-7.

NFC_vs_AFC_5.jpg

Left: Warren Moon's interception frenzy continued late in the first half with 54 seconds left as he was trying to drive the team down field to score before the half. However Falcons middle linebacker, Jessie Tuggle, leaped and picked the pass off giving the ball back to the NFC>
Right: Rookie saftey Aeneas Williams surprised everybody by having an outstanding 1991 season that led to him being voted in as the AFC's starting saftey, and it's plays like this leaping interception off of Joe Montana that made him get here and has people talking about him being the future at the position. The interception would halt the NFC drive with 28 seconds left in the half, and bring the ball to the AFC's 43 yard line.

NFC_vs_AFC_6.jpg

Left: The AFC's quarterback woes continued with Bills star quarterback Jim Kelly in the 2nd half as he tossed this interception that was picked out of the sky by young Lions middle linebacker, Chris Spielman.
Right: The NFC's kicker, Al Del Greco, was finally called into use with 4:22 left in the 3rd quarter as he knocked in this 46 yard field goal to keep their lead 17 to 13.

NFC_vs_AFC_7.jpg

Left: Gary Anderson knocked in yet another field goal for the AFC to keep them in contention. This 24 yarder would make it 17 to 16 transitioning into the 4th quarter.
Right: The NFC was tired of letting the AFC linger closely to their lead and in the 4th quarter pieced together a 10 minute offensive drive that was capped by a 6 yard touchdown run by Lions runningback, Barry Sanders. Sanders touchdown score would put the NFC up 24 to 16 with 2:15 left in the game. The AFC was unable to answer in their next drive, turning the ball over on 4th down, and sealing the victory for the NFC team.

Bears Team MVP
--------------------------------------------------------
HB - Neal Anderson

Offensive MVP - HB - Neal Anderson
Defensive MVP - DE - Richard Dent

Bears Player Standouts
---------------------------------------------------------------
1. - HB - Neal Anderson - 343 Att - 4.5 Avg - 1,564 Yds - 15 TD - 4 Fum - 32 Rec - 284 Yds - 4 TD
Info: Neal Anderson had the best year of his career in 1990, at least until he finished this season. Anderson continued to improve in 1991 to solidify himself as one of the league's current elite running backs. With 3,695 combined yards and 35 combined touchdowns in 2 seasons Anderson is putting himself in a top tier. He improved his already impressive 4.3 avg last season to 4.5 and added 3 extra touchdowns will cutting back on turnovers, fumbling 2 less times. He did not make as many catches as last season but scored the same number of receiving touchdowns. Every year of his career Anderson has improved his yards total going from 146, to 586, 1106, 1275, 1455, 1564! If Anderson can remain healthy the Bears have their offense defined for years to come as Anderson is still only 27 years old. Neal also took home his third straight team MVP award.

2. - WR - Herman Moore - 43 Rec - 8.3 Avg - 360 Yds - 2 TD
Info: Rookie Herman Moore is looking to try and make an impact in the Bears passing game. The youngster stepped right in and was the team's #3 wide receiver with 43 catches on the season. His average dipped compared to the norm with only 8.3 per catch but he also caught a pair of touchdowns. Moore took advantage of what was given to him in a rather lackluster passing season for the Bears. Free agent acquisition quarterback, Mark Vlasic, did not perform to hype and the Bears passing game was one of the weaker in the league, but Moore didn't let that phase him. If his rookie season is any indication it will be interesting to see how Moore pans out with a more reliable passing attack.

3. - DE - Richard Dent - 55 Tak - 17 loss - 14 Sack - 2 FR - 4 Deflect
Info: Yet another Monster season for the veteran star defensive lineman, Richard Dent. However it was without doubt that Dent would be unable to recreate last years monster 20 sack season. So while this was still an amazing year that saw Dent take down quarterbacks 14 times, it was still not as good as last years tremendous outcome. Dent continues to defy age at 31 years old as he still is amongst the elite defensive ends in the league. The only question is how much longer can he keep putting up 14+ sack seasons?

Bears Player Letdowns
-------------------------------------------------------------
1. - FB - Brad Muster
Info Muster is coming off a key surgery he had two seasons ago, but it's become apparent that he is not the fullback he originally set out to be when he was younger. In his first few seasons Muster became an integral part of the Bears rushing game. However the last two seasons, post surgery, Muster has merely become a blocking threat. While Muster is still one of the best blocking full backs, helping pave the way for Neal Anderson, he would be much more efficient if he went back to his 500+ combined yards 8 combined touchdowns seasons like in 1989. While those numbers may have dropped he can still be a threat as a blocking full back, however, the Bears are truly let down knowing that it appears they won't be getting that monster in the making back.

2. - QB - Mark Vlasic - 166 of 269 Att - 1,550 Yds - 61% - 12 TD - 8 Int - 25 Sack - 59 LG - 80 Rat
Info: In 1990 Mark Vlasic surprised the league by evolving into what they thought was a top notch efficient quarterback with the San Diego Chargers. As the Chargers quarterback Vlasic led the team to a 12-4 record, winning their division. In doing so he had 2,470 yards and 18 touchdowns with only 8 interceptions. Vlasic became a sought after free agent when the Chargers surprisingly let him go, and the Bears won out in a bidding war. Now Vlasic's year was adequate, an 80 quarterback rating is nothing to snuff at, but it's nothing special either. Vlasic only had 1,550 yards on the season averaging only 5.7 yards per pass. Not to mention his 12 touchdown total leaves a lot to be desired in a passing attack. Luckily for him he wasn't carrying the team, as Neal Anderson was, and still managed to have the team go 10-6 under his helm. However Vlasic will have to be quick to change that if he wants to hold of Jim Harbaugh and rookie Todd Marinovich who are both still fighting for his job. It's Vlasic's job to loose, and mediocrity won't keep him in the starting role for long.

3. - SS - Mark Carrier - 46 Tak - 1 FF - 1 FR - 4 Int - 1 TD - 8 Deflect
Info: Mark Carrier blasted onto the scene last year as a rookie saftey and playing surprisingly well for the Bears secondary, surpassing all expectations. However in 1991 there was a bit of regression, in what is typically referred too as the sophomore slump. Carrier dropped down from 70+ tackles to 46, and his pass coverage was good statistically but he got burned a few times on the field. While he certainly wasn't horrendous on the field the Bears were just hoping for either an equal or progressed version of Carrier to step out on the field this season.

Bears Review
-----------------------------------------------------
Review: Last season the Bears laid the ground work for a potential playoff team. This year the Bears made that a realization with hard-nosed football playing. Ditka led the team to a 10-6 record and they got their coveted playoff birth back. Neal Anderson established himself as a top running back in the league, and Mark Vlasic managed to do a half-way decent job in his first year with his new team. The Bears have some young wide receiver rookies that their hoping pan out in Herman Moore and Ed McCafferey, to potentially give Vlasic the weapons he needs to succeed in Chicago. Meanwhile the Bears defense, as usual, is solid with Richard Dent and Mike Singletary destroying offensive players everywhere. With solid play from tertiary players like Jim Morrissey, Shaun Gayle, Ron Rivera, and William Perry the Bears continue to be a smash mouth team with a lot of potential, and veteran leadership. While some youths struggled like Mark Carrier, the Bears are still establishing themselves as a contender for at least the next half a decade.

Cincinnati Bengals Year Report
===================================================
Coach: Sam Wyche
Yrs: 8
Season Record: 12-4
Overall Record: 71-56 (.559)
Status: Sam Wyche continues to remain the coach for the Cincinnati Bengals. His contract is up this off-season but he made a big case for himself by having the Bengals go 12-4 under his stead, beating out the 11-5 Pittsburgh Steelers and the 10-6 Cleveland Browns in a heated division rivalry. Wyche of course has to live iwth the fact that the Bengals lost the Super Bowl under his stead in 1988, so if he can answer for that he most likely will be re-signed this off season, Wyche is currently listed as the Bengals all-time winningest head coach with 71 victories under his belt with this years 12.

Bengals Team MVP
--------------------------------------------------------
HB - James Brooks

Offense - HB - James Brooks
Defense - S - Aeneas Williams

Bengals Player Standouts
---------------------------------------------------------------
1. - FS - Aeneas Williams - 62 Tak - 2 Loss - 1 Sack - 1 FF - 7 Int - 10 Deflect
Info: Aeneas Williams was picked by the Cincinnati Bengals with their first round selection in the 1991 NFL Draft. Little did they know Williams would have such a large impact so early for the team. Williams had a monster year that saw him acquire 62 tackles, 5th on the team, as well as a team leading 7 interceptions. Williams proved he could defend the pass with his 10 deflections and was a big reason for the Bengals success this year as their pass defense wasn't phased despite the loss of a few key members in the off-season. If Williams rookie season is any indication of how he is planning on playing in the NFL the Bengals may have just drafted the next big thing at safety.

2. - HB - James Brooks - 255 Att - 4.8 Avg - 1,249 Yds - 13 TD - 3 Fum - 30 Rec - 7.3 Avg - 220 Yds - 2 TD
Info: James Brooks has yet another Pro Bowl caliber season for the Bengals, taking home his first team MVP award as well. Brooks led the team with a solid 1,249 yards on the ground and managed to hit pay dirt 15 combined times this year. Brooks extra effort on offense helped vault the Bengals, along with Ickey Woods, and Harold Green, into the upper echelon of run attacks in the 1991 season. The 33 year old running back has shown no signs of slowing down, despite this though there are rumors of him not returning next year. Brook was finishing his contract year with the Bengals and at his age has stated that he is ready to move on from football. However we'll have to see if this amazing year by Brooks is enough to convince him to stay, the Bengals certainly hope so.

3. - DE - Daniel Stubbs - 45 Tak - 8 Loss - 12 Sack - 1 FF - 4 Deflect
Info: Daniel Stubbs signed a monster 4 year $17,48 million dollar contract with the Bengals after his outbreak 1990 season. Stubbs wasn't known as one of the league's best but broke onto the scene last season, not having faith in him his team released Stubbs where he was able to sign with the Bengals. The Bengals gave him the start over Skip McClendon (85 Ovr) and took a gamble that he would be able to recreate his 1990 season, and it was a good gamble. Stubbs proved he was here to stay as he led the Bengals in sacks with 12 on the season. Stubbs was a monster threat to quarterbacks around the league, putting pressure on them as often as possible. The Bengals combination of Daniel Stubbs, Mike Hammerstein, Tim Krumrie, David Grant, and SKip McClendon made quarterbacks quiver all year long.

Bengals Player Letdowns
-------------------------------------------------------------
1. - TE - Rodney Holman - 56 Rec - 6.6 Avg - 370 Yds - 2 TD - 1 Drop
Info There was one thing Holman did right in 1991 and that was catch the football, he was 2nd on the team in receptions with 56. The only problem was that those 56 catches only averaged 6.6 yards per catch. Holman's paltry 370 yards on the ground left much to be desired and he only managed 2 touchdowns all year. Holman was supposed to be a large part of the Bengals goal line passing attack this year. Esiason set out to make him an integral cog in the teams gears when it came to scoring but Holman was unable to deliver. If Holman can't start heading down field more often the Bengals may have to look elsewhere for the tight end weapon that they are expecting Holman to grow into.

2. - C - Bruce Kozerski - 15 Pancakes - 6 Sacks Allowed
Info: The Bengals pride themselves in having one of the better offensive lines in the league. With players like Ken Walter, Brian Blados, Bruce Reimers, and Anthony Munoz there is a reason Esiason and Brooks have been playing well the past few seasons. One of those reasons was always center Bruce Kozerski. Kozerski was a top notch center that the Bengals could rely on but in 1991 he struggled. The 29 year old ended up having only 15 pancakes with 6 sacks allowed in his first few games before being knocked out with an injury. While that allowed Scott Kooistra to come in and play well, Kozerski showed in the short time he did play that he was struggling this season. If Kozerski keeps this up it won't be long before the Bengals find a way to fill his hole in the line.

3. - DT - Chris Zorich - 1 Tak - 1 Loss - 1 Sack
Info: Rookie Chris Zorich was drafted by the Bengals this year to make an impact on the defensive line. However he ended up just getting crowded out in a who's-who of defensive lineman in 1991. Zorich will have to pick up his play if he wants to be a starter in the league. Right now the Bengals are seemingly cluttered at the DT position with Tim Krumrie and Mike Hammerstein in front of Zorich. Barring injury it doesn't appear he'll get his chance to shine in Cincinnati and may have to look elsewhere soon. Zorich had high expectations coming out of college and hopefully will be able to realize them soon enough.

Bengals Review
-----------------------------------------------------
Review: The Bengals improved 2 games over last years 10-6 outing. In 1990 the Bengals barely snuck into the playoffs as a wild card team falling behind their division rival Steelers at 11-5 with the Bengals 10 victories. However in 1991 Wyche and company managed to pull out a few extra victories that led to a swing of power in the division, putting the Bengals on top. Boomer Esiason improved over an already good year by having 500 more yards and 3 more touchdowns in 1991, putting his quarterback rating over 90. Meanwhile James Brooks went from 829 yards and 3 touchdowns on the ground to 1,249 yards and 13 touchdowns on the ground, making a vast improvement in the Bengals rushing attack. Meanwhile the Bengals defense improved as well despite loosing some key players like Lewis Billups, Carl Carter, and Eric Thomas from their defensive backfield. With the addition of veterans Daniel Stubbs, and ex-Packer corner back, Mark Lee, the Bengals didn't loose a step. In fact some would say they picked up a step with the performance they had in 1991. Now the Bengals are going to have to deal with their age as they enter into the off season. With B.Esiason, J.Brooks, C.Weathers, R.Holman, A.Munoz, B.Reimers, K.Walter, and T.Krumrie all 30 years or older the Bengals window of opportunity is very small. While they may have already found young replacements in James Francis, Jimmy Spencer, and Aeneas Williams, there are still needs on the team. If the Bengals want a shot at finally winning the big game, it'll have to be done in the next 2-3 years, before rebuilding begins.

Buffalo Bills Year Report
===================================================
Coach: Marv Levy
Yrs: 8
Season Record: 13-3
Overall Record: 74-69 (.517)
Status: Marv Levy continues to improve with the recent success of the Buffalo Bills. After a rocky career start with only 1 winning season in his first 7 years of Coaching, it wasn't until 1988 that the Bills started becoming a power-house team in the AFC. This year was no different as the trio of Jim Kelly, Thurman Thomas, and Andre Reed helped clinch another playoff birth and improved on last years 12-4 record with a 13-3 output this season. However once again playoff struggles led to the demise of the Bills in their Super Bowl hunt.

Bills Team MVP
--------------------------------------------------------
HB - Thurman Thomas

Offense - HB - Thurman Thomas
Defense - LB Cornelius Bennett

Bills Player Standouts
---------------------------------------------------------------
1. - WR - Jeff Graham - 76 Rec - 9.7 Avg - 743 Yds - 7 TD - 4 Drop
Info: Rookie WR Jeff Graham was a great help to the Bills passing offense. The Bills believe they finally have a solid #2 behind Andre Reed. Graham was a touchdown machine early in the season but tapered off, as rookies tend to do, in the second half.

2. - CB - Nate Odomes - 51 Tak - 4 Int - 16 Deflect
Info: Nate Odomes helped improve the pass defense of the Buffalo Bills greatly in 1991. His contributions in knocking down the football was a large reason for the Bills success that goes untold due to the offensive flair the Bills possess.

3. - HB - Thurman Thomas - 366 Att - 4.8 Avg - 1,782 Yds - 15 TD - 3 Fum - 63 Rec - 9.1 Avg - 577 Yds - 5 TD - 0 Drop
Info: Everyone has accepted that Thurman Thomas is a top running back in the NFL, but nobody expected him to have the season that he did in 1991. Thomas exploded with a huge workload of 366 carries for 1,782 yards a carer high besting last years 1,699 yard career high. But this season he found the endzone more with a combined 20 total touchdowns, 15 on the ground 5 in the air.

Bills Player Letdowns
-------------------------------------------------------------
1. - DE - Leon Seals - 26 Tak - 3 Loss - 4 Sack - 2 Deflections
Info Seals working on the opposite side of Bruce Smith didn't show much in 1991 despite often having his teammate get double blocks, freeing him up. Seals was a contributing factor to an overall lackluster pass rush defensive year for Buffalo.

2. - DT - Jeff Wright - 25 Tak - 3 Loss - 3 Sack - 1 FF - 3 Deflections
Info: Jeff Wright was supposed to clog up the middle but apparently he never received the memo. His lackluster starting season may have Buffalo looking elsewhere at the DT position in the near future.

3. - WR - Don Beebe - 7 Rec - 8.0 Avg - 56 Yds
Info: Beebe has usually been a solid X-Factor for the Bills in years past, and has stood out on Special Teams. But in 1991 he failed to make any large splashes for the Bills as he was getting edged out by youngsters Jeff Graham, Mike Pritchard, and Raghib Ismail.

Denver Broncos Year Report
===================================================
Coach: Dan Reeves
Yrs: 11
Season Record: 7-9
Overall Record: 101-66-1 (.601)
Status: Dan Reeves in his 11th NFL season celebrated his 100th victory as a head coach on November 10th, 1991 against the Washington Redskins in Denver where the Broncos pulled out a late 22 to 20 victory. But the question is will he be allowed to continue coaching the Broncos after next season?

Following that game the Broncos lost a close 24-16 game to the Jets in New York. No problem with the bounce-back agaisnt the Chiefs in a 16-13 victory the following week. But it was then the 5 game loosing streak against the Chargers, Eagles, Raiders, Browns, and Bills by a combined opponents 120-47 Broncos points. The Broncos went from a 7-4 team leading their division to 7-9, 3rd in their division and out of the playoffs.

Dan Reeves has one year left on his contract, and since 1990 has gone down every year in team record despite supposedly adding talent. Reeves may be celebrating a great career mile-stone but anything short of greatness next year might see him getting booted out of the building.

Broncos Team MVP
--------------------------------------------------------
LB - Simon Fletcher

Offense - WR - Mark Jackson
Defense - LB - Simon Fletcher

Broncos Player Standouts
---------------------------------------------------------------
1. - LB - Simon Fletcher - 111 Tak - 16 Loss - 14 Sack - 2 FF - 3 Int - 13 Deflections
Info: Linebacker Simon Fletcher is entering the prime of his career in style with a monster 11 tackle, 14 sack, 3 interception season that also saw him show his versatility against the pass with 13 deflections. Fletcher was the anchor of the Broncos defense as he continues to outshine aging MLB Karl Mecklenburg.

2. - WR - Mark Jackson - 92 Rec - 11.7 Avg - 1,079 Yds - 6 TD - 7 Drop
Info: Mark Jackson had a monster year that was shut down by an injury. If Jackson had stayed healthy he would've easily gone over the century mark in receptions. He combined with Johnson for 177 catches making them one of the most fear duos in the league.

3. - WR - Vance Johnson - 85 Rec - 12.7 Avg - 1,082 Yds - 5 TD - 2 Drop
Info: Johnson and Jackson continue to impress with their combination stealing the show for the Broncos offense. Despite the struggling of Elway these two were seemingly the only producers on offense for the Broncos.

Broncos Player Letdowns
-------------------------------------------------------------
1. - QB - John Elway - 272 of 488 Att - 55% - 3,038 Yds - 14 TD - 17 Int - 69.5 Rat
Info A sub 70.0 quarterback rating for John Elway sums up the Broncos season as they just couldn't get it done in the end of the year. Elway only had 14 touchdowns all year long, and eclipsed that in the amount of interceptions he threw. Elway's strong arm was enough to keep Vance Johnson and Mark Jackson happy, but he struggled to spread the ball around as the ability to do so just wasn't available.

2. - DT - Greg Kragen - 35 Tak - 1 FR - 3 Deflections
Info: Greg Kragen, the Broncos starting defensive tackle is the epitomy of the Broncos defensive struggles. Despite playing in 16 games for them Kragen did not have a single sack. Warren Powers only had 2, and Ron Holmes suffered with a single sack on the season. Backups Andre Townsend, Jake McCullough, Jim Szymanski, and Galloway had 2. When your entire defensive line has only 6 sacks on the year then you know what needs to be done to fix it.

3. - CB - Tyrone Braxton - 39 Tak - 3 Int - 1 TD - 4 Deflections
Info: While he did have 3 interceptions, 1 returned for a touchdown, Braxton's lackluster 1991 season was a big reason for the Broncos defensive struggles.

Cleveland Browns Year Report
===================================================
Coach: Bill Belichick
Yrs: 1
Season Record: 10-6
Overall Record: 10-6 (.625)
Status: The Browns fired Bud Carson after their lackluster 1990 season and brought in first year Head Coach, Bill Belichick. Belichick surprised many and with a young talented Browns team led them to a great 10-6 season. The only problem? In their dominating division that wasn't enough for a playoff birth. The 12-4 Bengals and 11-5 Steelers stole any chances of the Browns entering the playoffs, which is now number 1 priority for Cleveland in 1992.

Browns Team MVP
--------------------------------------------------------
HB - Leroy Hoard

Offense - HB - Leroy Hoard
Defense - LB - William Thomas (R)

Browns Player Standouts
---------------------------------------------------------------
1. - LB - William Thomas - 105 Tak - 10 Loss - 10 Sack - 1 FF - 2 FR - 5 Deflections
Info: Rookie William Thomas exploded onto the NFL scene with an outstanding rookie season. Thomas had a monster 105 tackle season only 2nd to Browns linebacker, Mike Johnson, who had 115. His 10 sacks was 2nd on the team to Browns linebacker Clay Matthews (11). But there's no doubt that the injection of William Thomas with Johnson and Matthews turns the Browns linebacker corps into one of the better ones in the league.

2. - WR - Reggie Langhorne - 64 Rec - 13.7 Avg - 879 Yds - 7 TD - 9 Drop
Info: Despite a nagging drop bug Langhorne finally had a season that the Browns have been expecting him to have for numerous years now. He worked greatly as the teams #2 wide receiver alongside Webster Slaughter and picked up his slack.

3. - RT - Tony Jones - 64 Pancakes - 3 Sacks Allowed
Info: The Cleveland Browns finally saw the Tony Jones that they wanted to see when they drafted him in 1988. After two injury prone season he had a mediocre 1990 year with the Browns. But this year Jones was on fire with 64 pancakes and only 3 sacks allowed, easily being crowned the best lineman for the Browns in 1991.

Browns Player Letdowns
-------------------------------------------------------------
1. - HB - Eric Metcalf - 71 Att - 4.1 Avg - 292 Yds - 0 TD - 3 Fum - 1 Rec - 10.0 Avg - 10 Yds - 37 KR - 24.4 Avg - 904 Yds - 1 TD - 51 PR - 11.2 Avg - 573 Yds
Info For an everyman Metcalf struggled in everything but returning this year. He may have had a 4.1 average on his few rushing attempts but never saw paydirt. His great hands were hardly utilized by Kosar all year and he didn't crack 1k yards on kick returns. His 1 combined touchdown left much to be desired by the Browns.

2. - HB - Kevin Mack - 24 Att - 1.8 Avg - 45 Yds - 21 Rec - 6.0 Avg - 128 Yds - 2 TD - 1 Drop
Info: Kevin Mack was used as a backup receiving back and he did decently with 21 grabs but only average 6 yards per catch. However it was his abysmal 1.8 yards per carry average that has Browns fans happy to know that Barry Word joined the team.

3. - K - Jerry Kauric - 22 of 36 FG - 61% - 0 Blk - 33 of 35 XP - 94% - Blk
Info: It's pretty much set in stone that Cleveland would've made the playoffs this year if they had a better kicker. The Browns only needed 1 more victory to move on and when you kicker only hits 61% of his field goals and misses 2 extra points, that leaves 44 points off the board for Cleveland, any of which could've helped in their two sub 3 point losses.
