Chargers and Redskins Expected to Splash in Free Agency
AP - The San Diego Chargers and the Washington Redskins should improve for this upcoming season because they are fully expecting to make their own splashes in the free agent market this off-season. Both the Chargers and Redskins have over $15 million in cap space. Although this is partly due to the fact that San Diego is allowing QB Mark Vlasic, LE, Lee Williams, WR Quinn Early, and FS Vencie Glenn all test the free agency markets, despite the outstanding 1990 season the Chargers had. Meanwhile the Washington Redskins had just made some very smart contract decisions in the previous seasons that have left them looking. So far there are already a few free agents visiting both teams and playing with the idea of signing with them.

The San Diego Chargers have had numerous vistors already, namely the veteran Patriots quarterback, Marc Wilson, who just had his greatest NFL season at the age of 33. This is heating up even more speculation that Vlasic will not re-sign with San Diego despite what he did for the team. The Chargers are also entertaining the likes of former 49ers tackle, Bubba Paris, and ex-Packers linebacker, who had an amazing 1990 campaign, Tim Harris. At the same position as Harris Van Waiters was seen canoodling in the park with Charger management along with Joe Mott. Veteran free saftey, Felix Wright recently aquired a phone call from the Chargers general manager which is also sparking rumors that even Vencie Glenn will not return. Meahwhile at strong saftey, argueable, one of the best free agent players available, Thane Gash recently returned from his outing in San Diego and said he was very impressed with what he saw, and felt it would be a major step up from Cleveland.

At the same time the Washington Redskins were certainly not turning a blind eye to free agents as they welcomed many key players with open arms. Veteran backup quarterback Jeff Kemp was given a visit to potentially play behind Mark Rypien due to their release of Stan Humprhies. Meanwhile Roger Craig was seen in town kicking around the idea of signing with the Redskins after his surprise release by the 49ers. Argueable the best available wide receiver, Roy Green, was seen eating on the Redskins dime at a local high-profile diner. Pro bowl defensive tackle, Keith Millard was also visiting the Redskins, his 3rd team in 3 weeks (Packers & Bills). The best linebacker in free agency, Eugene Lockheart was also enjoying the local San Diego beaches recently. The Redskins want a right outside linebacker and brought both John Grimsley and Bobby Houston in as their guests of honor, with Vencie Glenn hopping across the country as well.

All in all the Chargers and Redskins have been very busy entertaining the league's best available players. Although the free agency period is just beginning, and with the upcoming NFL Draft the decisions that both teams make could drastically change, only time will tell.

1991 NFL Draft - Round 1

Best Pick: 17th - Bengals - FS - Aeneas Williams
Williams dropped far to the 17th overall pick in the 1991 NFL Draft. But the Bengals were certainly happy to receive him. Williams is the future at saftey for the Bengals, and there's no doubt that he will succeed in the NFL.

Worst Pick: 27th - Oilers - RE - Robert Young
While Robert Young is not a bad pick, he was projected to be a late 2nd rounder. That being said the Oilers left many better players in more pressing positions on the board when they selected Young. These aren't the kinds of moves that a defending AFC Champion Oilers need to make if they want to get back there again this year.

Info: Well the 1991 first round was surprising as the first two picks saw players go to the real teams that they went to in real life (even if Farve was actually a 2nd rounder to the Falcons in RL). Brett Favre, the highest rated QB coming out of college was picked #1 overall, and Jets linebacker Mo Lewis taken at #2. Herman Moore was picke up by the Bears at #5 and that should be interesting to see how they develop as the Bears never really had any solid receivers until 3-4 years from now with the aquistions of both Curtis Conway and Jeff Graham. Ricky Watters was snagged by the Rams at #8 and it was actually a horrible pick as Madden's draft logic started to enter. The Rams have two runningbacks rated higher than Watters (C.Warner, C.Gary) so there's doubt that Watters will see much, if any, playing time in his rookie season, possibly stunting his progression. Eric Swann was a steal at 84 Ovr for a #9 pick Cowboys offer. Russell Maryland will really help develop an already studly Saints defense. Paul Justin will actually end up battling with Jeff Hostetler for the #1 quarterback spot for the Giants due to Phil Simms retirement. Justin's real life NFL career was short lived as he backed up with the Bengals and Colts before fading into obscurity. Darryll Lewis will be a solid future corner for the Lions along with teammate Bruce McNorton. Harvey Williams was picked up by the Bills to backup for Thurman Thomas. Meanwhile Leonard Russell has a good shot at starting in Green Bay as they still aren't sold on a runningback. Eric Turner will, at the moment, be starting at the saftey spot for San Diego Chargers barring any free agent aquisitions as they've released Vencie Glenn. Meanwhile the final pick of the 1st round of the 1991 NFL Draft went to the world champion Philadelphia Eagles as they selected a (at the time) young star cornerback, Merton Hanks.

1991 NFL Draft - Round 2

Best Pick: 16th (44th) - Chiefs - TE - Ben Coates
Ben Coates is the most highly touted tight end to ever enter into the NFL. People are already talking about him as one of the greatest to play before he has even touched an official NFL football. The Chiefs were elated to find that he had lasted until their second round selection, and snagged the opportunity to bring a new face to their offense.

Worst Pick: 1st/2nd/6th/26th - K - John Kasay/Richie Andrews/Robbie Keen/Jeff Emanuel
Horrible draft decisions by the Falcons, Jets, Cardinals, and Chargers saw them all quickly select the only available kickers...in the 2nd round. The hardest blow was the San Diego Chargers slecting Jeff Emanuel (58 Ovr) with other quality players like Nolan Harrison/Ed McCaffrey/Jake Reed/Todd Lyght/Marcus Robertson, etc available on the board. There is no reason that any of these teams should've selected kickers this early in the draft, even if John Kasay could progress nicely for the Falcons, it still doesn't warrent a 2nd round 1st pick selection when there are many other pressing needs.

Info: I was once again disappointed in Madden's draft logic as 4 kickers all went (in real life only 3 kickers were taken so everybody after Robbie Keen will keep there madden gen. names). Howard Griffith was a solid pickup for the Vikings that should help greatly in the running game as his blocking skills will help develop a returning from injury Herschel Walker. Henry Jones was a steal for the Raiders this late, as he was projected to be a 1st rounder. Roman Phifer will attempt to fill in the void left by a released Eugene Lockhart. Meanwhile the New York Giants may have found their future wide receiver threat as they picked up Keenan McCardell in the middle of the 2nd. Ben Coates was an absolute steal for the Chiefs, however their run-heavy offense may not let him see as many passes as he would like. Bob Christian was a solid selection by the Detroit Lions as they now have a true fullback to help advance Barry Sanders even more. The Bills are surprisingly loading up on runningbacks as they select Ricky Ervins who will likely play 3rd string behind Thurman Thomas and 1st round pick, Harvey Williams. Bill Musgrave will be the Oilers new 3rd string quarterback in a selection that most Houston fans bawked at. Meanwhile the Eagles ended the round with their selection of defensive tackle Nolan Harrison to play behind Clyde Simmons and Jerome Brown.

1991 NFL Draft - Round 3

Best Pick: 23rd - (69th) - Bills - WR - Jeff Graham
With the retirement of James Lofton the Bills are going to need somebody to fill his void, and they think they've got it in Jeff Graham. What makes this pick so good is that they managed to get a wide receiver of his caliber this late in the draft. With McCafferey, Thigpen, and Reed all taken before the Bills held out and got who they think is the best of all of them.

Worst Pick: 4th - (60th) - Vikings - QB - Pat O'Hara
The Vikings do indeed need help at the quarterback spot as Rich Gannon and Wade Wilson didn't exactly tear up the charts. Pat O'Hara could be a servicable quarterback in the future (70 OVR) but the fact that he was taken 12 picks before Browning Nagle to has much better skills (77 Ovr) leaves this pick looking as bad as it was.

Info: The remaining middle linebackers pretty much didn't contribute much in the NFL, but the madden ratings may change that for them as the Jets went linebacker again, this time with Derrick Brownlow who came out at 76 overall. The Bears took yet another wide receiver to add to their surprising and growing corps with Herman Moore. Todd Lyght could be the future at corner for the Saints as they need some help there. Meanwhile the kicker fiasco continues as the Seahawks selected a horrible 52 ovr kicker with the 22nd pick in the 3rd round with quality players like Ted Washington, Shawn Jefferson, Michael Jackson, Andrew Glover, Aaron Craver, and Phil Hanson just picks away from being taken, still on the board.

1991 NFL Draft - Round 4

Best Pick: 16th - (100th) - Chiefs - RE - Phil Hansen
Info: Phil Hansen should help the Chiefs defensive line out in the future. Taken in the middle of the 4th makes Hansen a steal. He has all the skills and tools to be a solid defensive lineman in the future

Worst Pick: 24th - (108th) - Lions - CB - Darryl Wren
Info: The Lions went ahead and took Darryl Wren in the 4th round a lot earlier than they should have. Not only will Wren probably not pan out a significant corner in the league, but there were still far better corners available for the picking on the board as well.

Info: The bad drafting CPU continues as the punters went this time. Two who were in the 50's. However there were some solid pickups like Ted Washington by the Dolphins. The Dolphins have significantly impacted their defensive line in this draft with the selectiongs of Michael Sinclaire, Moe Gardner, and Ted Washington. If they all pan out anywhere near to their NFL success they will be the best DL in the league. The Vikings added a solid receiver in Shawn Jefferson who should help them out in the future, however the Raiders picked up a slightly better Michael Jackson who will hopefully progress nicely. The Rams wnet the tight end route picking up Andrew Glover. Meanwhile Nick Bell was picked up by the Giants to backup their potential new starter Rodney Hampton. Andy Harmon will be a solid pickup for the Steelers defensive tackle spot, but will be their 3rd string. Raghib Ismail was a big steal for the Bills that late in the draft. His blazing speed could be a difference maker if he can progress his receiving abilities.

1991 NFL Draft - Round 5

Best Pick: 28th - (140th) - Eagles - SS - Marty Carter
Info: This years draft had a wealth of safties available, without a doubt the strongest position in the draft. And the Eagles knew this. So the Eagles waited until the final pick of the 5th round to select their backup to Andre Waters, and it's youngster Marty Carter out of Middle Tennessee. Carter (71 Ovr) would have probably been an early 2nd round pick in any other draft than this one. However that being said the Eagles have a solid young player that can be groomed behind one of the better safties in the league before he makes his NFL debut.

Worst Pick: 19th - (131st) - Buccaneers - LE - Mark Gunn
Info: The main reason that the Buccaneers selection was the worst pick in the 5th round is that 5 picks later two defensive ends with better potential (Tony Hill & Mark Agee) were taken (66 Ovr). When compared to the skill set that Mark Gunn has (63 Ovr) they arent' vastly superior, but they are superior nonetheless.

Info: The bad drafting CPU once again has some interesting picks as the Bills select yet ANOTHER wide receiver, this time Mike Pritchard. The Chiefs also select their 2nd quarterback of the draft. There were some solid picks, especially at the saftey spot, by the Rams, Browns, and Eagles who selected Stanley Richard (73 Ovr), Charles Mincy (72 Ovr), and Marty Carter (71 Ovr) respectively. All of who have future potential to be starters in the league. Yet all may be playing 2nd fiddle to some of the best safties in the league if they return to their teams in Vencie Glenn, Thane Gash, and Andre Waters.

1991 NFL Draft - Round 6

Best Pick: 8th - (148th) - Rams - WR - Randal Hill
Info: Hill has the most amazing speed in the draft. He ran a 4.29 40-time which is insane. The Rams were surprised to see him drop down this far and gobbled up the opportunity to select him. The Rams have a potential player here that could become a star. If he can stay healthy, and improve in his catching then he will be a forced to be reckoned with.

Worst Pick: 20th - (160th) - Steelers - DT - David Rocker
Info: NBot only was Rocker probably the worst skilled player selected in the 6th round (58 Ovr) but the Steelers have also selected 2 defensive tackles prior, in Kevlin Pritchett and Andy Harmon, so theres no doubt that those two, along with the veteran DT's on Pittsburghs squad, that Rocker will never see the light of day on the football field.

Info: There's no doubt in my mind that next year I am going to do the draft myself rather than the CPU, with the Vikings taking another QB, making it the 5th quarterback on their roster, the Bills picking yet another WR in Ernie Mills only to release him, Steelers selecting David Rocker, and the Packers taking HB Greg Lewis, it's suffice to say that the CPU Draft logic rears its ugly head once again. That being said there were some solid picks like the Cardinals grabbing Alvin Harper this late in the draft, along with the Colts Lawrence Dawsey at the WR position. The Bengals have a potential future starter in Jesse Campbell and Brad Goebel wasn't that bad of a selection to be a #3 quarterback in Houston.

1991 NFL Draft - Round 7

Best Pick: 27th - (195th) - Oilers - TE - Keith Cash
Info: Keith Cash was the #3 rated tight end coming out of the draft, so it was a surprise to many that it took until the 2nd last pick in the draft for him to be selected. Apparently teams did not feel the need at tight end was greater than there others as it wasn't since his brother, Kerry Cash was taken in the 3rd round that a TE was grabbed. The Oilers made out though because Cash has a good chance of contributing early to the team. The team runs an unconvential wide receiver set that usually doesn't have a tight end, but rather an extra WR in the form of Curtis Duncan. So it'll be interesting to see how the Oilers progress there offense in the future.

Worst Pick: 23rd - (191st) - Bills - WR - David Daniels
Info: This was the Bills 5th wide receiver taken in the draft, that's right, round 1 and 2, runningbacks, round 3-7 wide receivers. So this is easily the worst pick ever in a draft as the Bills didn't even bother signing him to an offer sheet.

Info: A few decent players could have come out of this final round in the 1991 NFL Draft. Kenny Walker was a solid pickup (67 ovr) this late for the Jets to help flesh out there defense even more. Meanwhille Harry Colon at a surprising 69 Ovr could end up starting some day for Kansas City. Wesley Carroll was a decent addition by the 49ers to their wide receiver corps and the Oilers added a potential star in the making tight end in Keith Cash with the 195th pick in the draft. Meanwhile this year's Mr. Irrelevant went to the Eagles selection, Mike Arthur, who will more than likely get a chance at some point to play.

Opinion: The Chargers and Patriots both had breakout quarterback unknowns last season in Marc Wilson and Mark Vlasic. Both of who are also not the youngest QB�s in the world. Apparently San Diego and New England didn�t have faith that either of their quarterbacks were capable of keeping up that level of play so both refused to resign them to new contracts. As a result Marc Wilson ended up, at 33 years old, actually signing with the Chargers who just got rid of a player remarkably similar to him. However the Patriots did not go after Mark Vlasic and instead signed Raiders backup quarterback, Steve Beuerlein to try and take their team to the next level. Meanwhile the Chargers let go of another one of their quarterbacks, who held out after just a single game last seasons, Billy Joe Tolliver. Apparently it was the Raiders who had the cash to offer as they signed him to challenge Jay Schroeder for the starting job there. Meanwhile the Redskins backup Stan Humphries caught the eye of Chuck who picked him up for the Steelers to backup Bubby Brister. There are some young decent quarterbacks available for teams that need them, or teams that may suffer injuries during the regular season in Tomczak, Walsh, and Chandler.

Opinion: The 49ers simply did not have the money under their cap to re-sign Roger Craig for what he was asking. They already tied up the majority of their funds in re-signing other key players such as Steve Young and Ronnie Lott. As a result he was released. Unfortunately for Craig not many teams showed interest in him because not many teams had the cap room to fit him in, but the ones that did, Tampa Bay and Washington, both gave him a thurough look over until the Buccaneers ended up picking him up. The Buccaneers need help offensively and Roger Craig was picked up to be the teams savior. Meanwhile injury prone, yet star-studded, Bo Jackson was let go by the Raiders who are going to stick with Marcus Allen at their starting spot this season. As a result of signing Bo Jackson the Oilers didn�t see a reason to re-sign last years team leading runningback, Mike Rozier. Rozier may have only had 671 yards but his 10 touchdowns sure caught the eye of the Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins run game struggled all year long due to injuries as well as lack of talent in general. Barry Word really surprised many people around the league when he played behind 1,885 yard, 9 touchdown leading rusher Christian Okoye, and still got 713 yards of his own with 7 touchdowns! The running game of the Chiefs last season was beyond crazy, but with their horrible passing game seemingly balancing it out and tough AFC competition, the Chiefs ended up not going to the playoffs despite having a 10-6 record. However the Cleveland Browns are looking to capitalize on that by picking up Word. Word should challenge Leroy Hoard for the starting position, who had a solid 1,311 yards and 13 touchdowns last season. They could become the next two-headed monster team in the NFL with a tough bruising backfield of Hoard and Word. The only downside is that Eric Metcalf and Kevin Mack will be pushed further down the depth chart and barring injuries won�t see much playing time. There were a few notable runningbacks left unsigned like John L. Williams who was superceeded by rookie Chris Warren mid-season last year. Williams had 414 yards and 2 touchdowns last season. The remaining Wilder, Perkins, and Rice are all average backups that couldn�t find a home, and Vai Sikahema, known for his kick returning skills, surprisingly was not signed by a team to take over kicking duties during the FA period.

Opinion: Well apparently the teams that do need fullbacks were content with their draft selections, or the horrible backups that they had. Opinion: The Cardinals veteran wide receiver, Roy Green was released by the team this off-season because they believe he is on the start of his career downfall at the age of 34. However the Cowboys obviously don�t agree as they picked up Roy Green who led the Cardinals last season in all receiving categories. At his current standing Green could even end up starting over both Michael Irvin and Kelvin Martin. Meanwhile the Chargers not only let go of their leading quarterback, but their leading receiver as well in Quinn Early. Due to injury to Anthony Miller, Early ended up being the Chargers leading receiver in all categories with 68 catches for 835 yards and 7 touchdowns. This breakout season for Quinn caught the attention of the New Orleans Saints who decided to take him as a replacement to their unsigned free agent, Brett Perriman. Early will now obtain his first chance at being a true #1 in New Orleans. Some solid #3 wide receivers are still available in the form of Leo Lewis, Kaseem Osgood, Sammy Martin, and deep ball threat Walter Stanley.

Opinion: There really were no good pass-catching tight ends available through free agency this season. Instead there were a couple okay pass catchers in Pete Holohan, Steve Arrington, and Aaron Cox, with them, as well as the others, being more proficient in blocking skills instead. Holohan left LA for Kansas City. Meanwhile the Chiefs Alfredo Roberts went north to Indianapolis. Arrington joined the Eagles to play behind Keith Jackson as his backup, meanwhile Aaron Cox went to fill the hole that Arrington left in Detroit. Sarowski, who didn�t play last year at all was picked up by the Falcons to be a backup blocking tight end for 2 TE sets.

Opinion: The Chiefs went out and signed Irv Pankey who many thought was the most proven available left tackle in free agency after he decided to not re-sign with the Los Angeles Rams. However the best statistical tackle was Pat Tomberlin who played for the Colts last season and was signed quickly by Seattle in the first days of free agency. Gerald Perry was released by the Broncos only to resign with them. Meanwhile an unproven Dave Virene capitalized from last seasons performance as the Giants bit and pulled him away from the Patriots and Packers. Irv Eatman had 12 pancakes and allowed only 1 sack as a backup for the Chiefs last season and the Dolphins are going to see if he can fulfill the same role in Miami for more money. Meanwhile the 49ers released Ricky Siglar who didn�t see a single snap, but still garnered interest as a backup for the Browns, Packers, and Patriots, eventually selecting New England as his home.

Opinion: Ralph Tamm was thought to be one of the better offensive lineman available in free agency this year. The Patriots were quick to snatch him up after they battled the Steelers to get him to sign. Although last year injuries and lackluster play affected Cleveland�s decision, thusly releasing him. In the meantime Randy Dixon, who is just as good was also picked up by New England as not only an insurance for Tamm but to play at other offensive line positions. Derek Kennard left Phoenix for Tampa Bay, as he expressed a desire to block for Roger Craig. Kennard will be filling the hole left by Carl Bax who just left town one day, uprooting out of Tampa Bay as quick as possible. This questionable act was resolved later when he expressed a desire to not resign, and had already apparently bought a house in Seattle. However these swift actions did resolve with him signing in Seattle, but at the same time once delved into it was found out that Bax is under some serious steroid allegations. The details of which are unsure at the moment. With that said the Saints and Falcons both took unknown backup tackles to fill in roster spots in Joseph Black and Ryan Wells.

Opinion: The best available guard to many in free agency was John Rienstra who had just come off a team-leading 48 pancake 9 sacks allowed season. Many Steeler fans were perplexed when Pittsburgh released their best offensive lineman of 1990 while still having the cash available to re-sign him. And apparently they had nothing to worry about, despite some preliminary look overs by the Buccaneers and Rams, the Steelers resigned him to a nice contract. Houston Hoover had a solid year for the Falcons despite nagging injuries, and as a result the Buccaneers, Chiefs, and Rams all showed interest in signing him, Hoover finally settled on Kansas City. The Oilers made another solid free agency pickup in Gregg Rakoczy who had a decent year last season for the Browns. Tutan Reyes comes over from the USFL into the NFL after a 32 pancake 8 sack year in that league. He dealt with the Rams and it paid off as he is now making his way in the NFL. Roy Foster, who saw practically no action in 1990 was picked up by Detroit to give depth, as was Dennis McKnight in Miami.

Opinion: Bubba Paris was easily the best offensive lineman available in free agency. He, along with Roger Craig, were big cap casualties in San Francisco. As a result he weighed his choices and liked his chances in San Diego as the 61 pancake monster joined the Chargers. He will replace last years starter in San Diego, who is no snub himself, Joel Patten. Pattent entertained offers from the Jets, Rams, and Seahawks, finally picking the Rams as his team of choice, and bringing along his 50+ pancake, sub 10 sacks allowed production with him. However he will be backing up legendary Jackie Slater, who is still playing amazingly at 37 years old, barring a sudden change of position. Ron Mattes was the leading offensive lineman in Seattle but that wasn�t enough for them to re-sign him as he left to challenge Kevin Call for the starting right tackle spot as a Colt. Roger Craig seems to be attracting all the offensive lineman to Tampa Bay as Harvey Salem will replace Harry Swayne�s spot after Salem had a breakout 1990 season. Last year Salem was a big reason for youngster Barry Sanders� success. The right tackle had 60 pancakes with only 8 sacks allowed proving himself as one of the few bright spots in an otherwise stingy Lions offensive line. Harry Swayne jumped the Gulf from Florida to Texas as he will be playing second fiddle in Dallas. Meanwhile Kevin Robbins was signed by the 49ers after he filled nicely in Cleveland for an injury, which is exactly the type of reliability San Francisco is looking for. Meanwhile another USFL player joins the NFL as Melvin Tuten will attempt to gain stardom as a right tackle for the Phoenix Cardinals.

Opinion: Lee Williams was shocked that San Diego cut him when they did, but it was merely because they could not afford him. As a result the Chiefs and Patriots tried to pick him up but to no avail as he resigned with San Diego at a much lower figure than he initially had. Last year was a bit of a let down as he had only 5 sacks after his 14 sack 1989 showing. Daniel Stubbs had a breakout 1990 campaign with Dallas as he earned himself a shot at the pro bowl with 12 sacks and 37 tackles. However Dallas decided to go in a different direction and let him go, where he was soon picked up by the Bengals. Veteran Dexter Manley leaves Arizona after an okay season to backup in Buffalo where he hopes to ride their coat tails to a super bowl championship. Karl Wilson was released by Miami because he wanted to see what offers were out there, apparently none, other than Miami, for a 34 tackle 3 sack left end. Gerald Robinson was released as well by San Diego, but they used his money to re-sign Williams over his 4 tackle self�good choice. Chicago eventually signed him to replace Joe Tafoya�s spot behind Trace Armstrong. Jeff Hunter was also released by Buffalo once they aquired Dexter Manley and went unsigned.

Opinion: The pickings were thin as far as right end was concerned this year in free agency, which is why many teams decided to convert left ends instead. Jim Skow was the only decent player available after serving his sentence in Tampa Bay. He then decided to sign with Phoenix of all things, after a 39 tackles 6 sack year. Rod Saddler was a Cardinal lineman that suffered a season ending injury last year after making only a single tackle during the regular season. The Dolphins are rolling the dice hoping he can stay healthy, if not, they have 2 rookie defensive ends, and Karl Wilson/Jeff Cross to give one hell of an insurance. Jeff Faulkner left Indianapolis to New York hoping to see more playing time. Opinion: Keith Millard is a big-time pickup for the Redskins as he brings an anchor to their defensive line. Millard is a pro-bowl caliber defensive tackle that had an off year last season, with 9 sacks for the Vikings. Tony Casillas proved his run stopping ability in 1990 with a 66 tackle performance in Atlanta that peaked the interest of the Packers who found their new starter at one of their weakest positions. Tracey Rocker now leaves Washington for Indianapolis with the news of Millard�s arrival. As well as Daryll Grant who decided Kansas City would give him a better shot at starting. Mark Duckens made the most of the short playing time he had in 1990 with his 10 tackles and 3 sacks that made Phoenix select him over the likes of Chris Pike. Pike was a backup tackle for Cleveland last year that saw playing time and resulted in a respectable 25 tackle, 6 sack year. The New Orleans Saints decided to pick him up. IN the mean time Fred Smerlas will replace Pike�s spot after a 1 tackle 1 sack 1 fr year in San Francisco. It appears this DT�s best years are behind him though. Gerald Nichols is a young DT that has potential but didn�t get to show it riding the pine in New York, hopefully Cleveland will give him a shot. Meanwhile Blaise Winter was the 3rd string DT in Green Bay but will now have a shot in Atlanta. The biggest surprise was at the last day the Chargers cut Joe Phillips, who is now available, and will most definitely be signed before the season starts somewhere. Meanwhile Greg Miesener, Tom Gibson, Legree, and Dickel all give potential 3rd stringers in case of injuries during the season.

Opinion: Tim Harris was one of the bigger names in this years free agency, and he wouldn�t have been last season. 1990 was the breakout year for Harris as he proved he has what it takes to be a star for the Packers defense. Not only was he 2nd on the team in tackles with 104, but he also aquired 10 sacks, and an amazing 7 forced fumbles, along with protecting against the pass with 13 deflections. Without Harris on the team there�s no way the Packers have as good a 1990 season as they did. And teams around the league knew this, but it was the Buccaneers that threw the most money at Harris, to replace Winston Moss. Moss was the Buccaneers leading tackler, sacker, and deflecter, so when they said they weren�t resigning him the few fans booed, but then cheered when they replaced him with someone even better. Moss then joined the Cardinals to take over for Anthony Bell who was in a similar situation, a solid team player unexpectedly released. However Bell would end up taking over from the beginning of the cycle as Green Bay picked him up. Van Waiters, who had 74 tackles and 10 deflections for the Browns last year will help the Chiefs linebacker corps. Joe Mott had a decent but injury plagued year for the Jets. The Chargers decided that he was their best bet after they failed to sign Tim Harris. Mickey Pruitt had a decent year backing up in Chicago, enough for Cleveland to take a chance on him. Keith McCants was released by Tampa Bay once they signed Harris, and Jason Glenn left New York along with Kelly, but went unsigned. Robert Lyles disappeared from the Oilers as well. Terry Pierce, Louis Cooper, Jimmy Williams, Gary Clark, and Tyronne Stowe are all still looking for work as backups and fillers around the league.

Opinion: Eugene Lockhart was one of the top 5 best available players in free agency this year. This tackling machine led the Cowboys once again in 1990 with 118 across the board. However he lacked in other areas, showing his weakness, but that wasn�t a concern for Washington as they quickly picked him up to a hefty contract. Ervin Randle leaves Tampa Bay after having a solid 73 tackle 8 sack 9 deflection year. Many are saying he�s improved greatly in his game but just didn�t have a chance to prove it on Tampa Bay�s team, so he�ll get his shot in Los Angeles as the Raiders will be putting him into the fire. Matt Millen was released by San Francisco after a top-notch 91 tackle 5 sack, 6 forced fumble year. Surprisingly no other team showed any interest in him until the 49ers resigned him. Henry Rolling was released mid-way through free agency by San Diego to restructure. However Minnesota came in an stole him by offering a much greater amount of money unexpectedly. In the meantime Rams linebacker Mike Wilcher went unsigned along with Jessee Solomon, two very capable linebackers. Kevin Rose, Charles Gran,t and Jeff Mills are also left searching for a backup role somewhere.

Opinion: There wasn�t much in terms of ROLB�s in this years free agency. The only decent one was John Grimsley, who is a great linebacker that had a breakout year leading the Oilers in tackles with 105. He also had 5 sacks and 11 deflections. He was one of many free agents that flocked to the Tampa Bay money throwing powerhouse that is starting to actually look like a team. Whoever the Buccaneers let go they�re picking up someone better, and now have a good looking LB corps in Tim Harris, Eugene Marve, John Grimsley, Kevin Murphy, and Broderick Thomas. Meanwhile Bobby Houston, who as Scott Stephens backup in Green Bay supposedly progressed greatly under tutoring there, however never showed much as he had 5 tackles a forced fumble and a deflection to show for his work all year long. However the Redskins see willing to give him a shot.

Opinion: There were a lot of good corners available, and surprisingly many were left unsigned. The biggest free agent was veteran corner Mark Lee who had a 5 interception year for the Packers last season, but they let him go due to age, and he was signed by the Bengals. Tim McKyer was also a big athletic player that Miami let go and the Buccaneers quickly gobbled up to replace Haddix. Haddix was statistically better but not athletically. Haddix thusly depearted once McKyer took his spot to Chicago where he�s looking to shine in a bigger market. Menawhile the Houston Oilers lost youngster Cris Dishman to the Packers who are expecting him to be their #1 cornerback going for youth to replace Lee. Lewis Billups, Carl Carter, and Eric Thomas were all released by the Bengals, with Lee being their only acquisition. Meanwhile Cedirc Mack, Michael Jenkins, and Charles Dimry could even be #1�s on some teams but are left unsigned. Vestee Jackson, Stan Petry, and Michael Mayes are decent enough players to be #2�s, and Chris Oldham, Mitchell, White, and Lilly are nickels at best.

Opinion: One of the better safties in the league is Vencie Glenn, but in 1990 he had an off year, despite the Chargers having a good year. The Chargers let him go in a decision booed by many fans as he found his way to the Redskins in hopes of revitalizing his ability. However the Chargers barely took a step down as they replaced Glenn with another good safety that had an off-year in 1990, Felix Wright of the Celveland Browns. Wright took offers from the Raiders and even Super Bowl Champ Eagles, but decided San Diego was the best fit for him. Vince Newsome snubbed San Francisco in favor of starting in New York for the Giants. Meanwhile Darrell Fullington should pan out in Los Angeles with the Rams. Solomon Wilcotts was picked up by the Raiders and will hopefully improve upon last years numbers, meanwhile Dave Duerson was yet another Tampa Bay Buccaneers free agent signing. Duerson played well for the Giants and hopes to continue that with the Yucks. William Frizzell and Lonnie Young essentially switched spots. As Darren Carrington is searching for more playing time with the Jets than he had with the Lions. Odie Harris will take Tim Gordon�s place in Atlanta behind Brian Jordan. Meanwhile Gordon went to Minnesota. The 49ers picked up Jeff Donaldson who was a backup in Kansas City to be a backup to Dave Waymer. Ron Brown may see more action in the same division as he leaves the Raiders for the Chiefs. Meanwhile Tavaras Tillman, who hasn�t played since the USFL�s final season in 1985, was signed by the Lions in hopes of revitalizing his career.

Opinion: Thane Gash is one of the best free safties in the game and the Browns let him slip through their fingers as the Chargers spent that money earned from cutting key players to re-unite both him and his Brown teammate and fellow free agent, Felix Wright, as the starters in San Diego�s defensive backfield. Gash�s 112 tackles were second on the team only to Clay Matthews, while he proved he could be a cover safety with 14 deflections. Todd Bowles was released by the Redskins, talked with the 49ers and Rams, and then decided that Washington was still the best place for him and remained. Terry Hoage has spent a few seasons learning behind Andre Waters in Philadelphia and the Patriots are going to try and give him his first shot as the replacement to Tim Hauck. Hauck didn�t see much action behind Fred Marion, but decided to leave, and join the Dolphins. Tracey Eaton was released by the Cardinals, restructured his contract, and picked right back up. The Chargers released Lester Lyles after they signed Gash and Lyles was picked up by the Jets to replace Josh Booty who remained unsigned along with Stevon Moore and Vann McElroy.

Opinion: Norm Johnson has played top notch kicking so far in his career but a lackluster 1990 season saw Seattle decide to let him go. Johnson than quickly signed on with the AFC Champ Houston Oilers in a big-time step up from the sometimes inconsistent Teddy Garcia. Although Garcia did have a 17 of 20 (80%) year to the Oilers surprise last season. Meanwhile Greg Davis follows his real-life counterpart by leaving the Falcons to re-join Phoenix aftera 73% year, including a missed extra point. Fuad Reveiz leaves San Diego with a horrible 64% kicking rate, that the Jets surprisingly pick up due to the retirement of Pat Leahy who had an equally bad 70% year in 1990. The Seahawks replaced Johnson with the Cardinals former kicker, Al Del Greco with only a net 1% drop in comparison. Meanwhile Ron Allegre will get his first shot at being the full-time starter in San Deigo after riding the bench behind Matt Bahr in New York last year. Tony Zendejas and John Carney were two kickers that were surprisingly unsigned. However due to the overall lack of ability in the kickers drafted, excluding John Kasay, they could easily end up signed before the season starts.

Opinion: One of the best punters in the league was in free agency in the form of Brian Hanson but the Patriots decided to quickly pick him right back up after realizing how valuable he was compared the rest of the punters. In the meantime Browns ex-Punter, Bryan Wagner pulled down a contract from the Packers, giving them a full 0.8 yards more per punt than their former punter, Don Bracken, who was signed by the Redskins. Joe Prokop left the big apple for Buffalo. Meanwhile Rick Tuten, Mojsiejnko, and Helton were all left in free agency. Although 1 or 2 may be picked up before the season starts since none of the rookies, except Chris Gardocki, seem to be panning out in the league.



Top 3 Teams In 1990-1991 Free Agency

1. Tampa Bay Buccaneers : The Buccaneers without a doubt had the best free agency period of any team. They replaced everybody they released with somebody better. Released Bruce Perkins (76 Ovr), come back with Roger Craig! (93 Ovr) A player that help magnetize interest in the team immediately that was otherwise not there. Carl Bax (81 Ovr) suddenly left and they replace him with Derek Kennard (83 Ovr) at left guard. Meanwhile Harry Swayne (71 Ovr) was cut from their right tackle spot and replaced with Harvey Salem of Detroit (81 Ovr). Winston Moss was released to TB fan�s surprise (88 Ovr) to be replaced by upstart Tim Harris (89 Ovr). Wayne Haddix left (88 Ovr) and was replaced by Tim McKyer (90 Ovr). They also added the Oilers best linebacker last year, John Grimsley. Things are starting to look up in Tampa Bay. They may not have a great passing game in place though, but with Craig they can afford to become heavily run-centric.

There is no doubt that the Buccaneers essentially just bought their way into respectability in this years off-season. With some rookie additions to the offensive line like Calvin Stephens (78 Ovr), and Rob Selby (71 Ovr) they are looking up.

2. Houston Oilers: It�s scary when the best team in the AFC who was just mere seconds away from becoming Super Bowl Champions, gets better. The first thing that really jumps out is the surprise pickup of Los Angeles Raiders runningback star, Bo Jackson. Bo Knows Football and he damn well knows that Houston gives him a much better shot at a Super Bowl Ring than the Raiders at this point. Along with him the Oilers also shored up a few other key players like RG, Gregg Rakoczy (82 Ovr). As well as a very underrated selection and a very underrated position in most of football with Norm Johnson (91 ovr) signing up to kick the pigskin in Houston.

3. Redskins: The Washington Redskins are definitely going to improve upon last years 9-7 record that saw them just barely miss the playoffs. With the additions of a new backup quarterback to Mark Rypien, Jeff Kemp (77 Ovr), But most of their big signings came on defense. In an attempt to re-gain that star defensive line they once had the Redskins signed Pro Bowl caliber defensive tackle from the Vikings, Keith Millard (92 Ovr). On top of that they also picked up the best MLB in the pool in Eugene Lockhart (99 Ovr) who had an amazing 118 tackles last year.

They also signed young backup LOLB Bobby Houston (80 Ovr) who has the potential but never got the chance in Green Bay to prove it. Meanwhile they took the best Free Saftey available in the league in Vencie Glenn (96 Ovr). As well as re-signing Todd Bowles (89 Ovr) to a new contract sheet. And finally Don Bracken will be punting for the Redskins (83 Ovr) as well. So the Redskins went out and offered many players contracts, most didn�t sign with them, but the key ones did. The Redskins got, who are believed to be, the best available players (ratings) at the Defensive Tackle, Middle Linebacker, and Free Saftey position. With the second best available at the Left Outside Linebacker, and Strong Saftey positions.

Post Free Agency News
AP - Many players that were surprisingly left untaken in the early major push for free agency are being looked at by teams. Quarterbacks Mike Tomczak, Steve Walsh, and Chris Chandler all visited numerous teams, including the Browns, Buccaneers, Cardinals, Cowboys, Dolphins, and Seahawks. With the Cardinals backup quarterback, Tom Tupa, considering taking up a punting position the Cardinals may be in need of a backup to Timm Rosenbach.

On the runningback front John L. Williams, James Wilder, and Bruce Perkins entertained visits to the Chiefs, Seahawks, and 49ers. The Chiefs have no-names sitting behind Okoye now that Barry Word left, and the 49ers are seemingly in HB trouble as they have last years rookie returner, Dexter Carter, set to be their starting runningback. Many are unsure about his ability (70 Ovr) to carry a full-load.

Wide Receiver Brett Perriman was shocked to see that nobody initially wanted his services, so he, along with Sammy Martin and Walter Stanley set out to Phoenix and San Diego who are both looking to aquire a good receiver. The Cardinals #1 is Ricky Proehl (79 Ovr) and Perriman (82 Ovr) would have a good shot at overtaking him for the #1 spot he desires.

Left Outside Linebackers, Keith McCants, Jason Glenn, and Robert Lyles are all attempting to seek employment after being released. McCants visited Detroit, and Glenn and Lyles both took a trip to Los Angeles to check out the Rams facilities.

Mike Wilcher and Jesse Solomon both were sent for by Dallas management as they're planning to enjoy their visit there as the Cowboys are looking for an insurance in case their current starting MLB, rookie Roman Phifer (77 Ovr) doesn't pan out as expected, or gets injured.

Chet Brooks was the only free saftey to be given a visit pre-main phase of free agency as the Cleveland Browns are wondering if their current starter (71 Ovr) is capable enough, or whether rookie Mike Dumas needs to start. The same could be said about their Strong Saftey position (73 Ovr) as they had Stevon Moore return for attempted negotions, as well as have Josh Booty and Van McElroy visit. Moore also sought negotions with Dallas and Atlanta for the backup jobs there, and Josh Booty only got his offer from Atlanta as well.

Two teams that drafted punters that are already disappointing in training camp are looking for replacements. That would be the Browns (53 Ovr) and the 49ers (58 Ovr). Rick Tuten visited San Francisco along with ex-Redskins Ralph Mojsiejenko. Tuten also went to Cleveland to check things out along with last years 49er punter, Barry Helton.

Buccaneers Set In 1991?
AP - The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have been everything but competative since their recent inception into the NFL. However things seem to be taking a change for the better as the Buccaneers aquired some key members in this years off-season. The biggest name of these aquisitions being San Francisco 49er star, Roger Craig. Roger Craig was a big reason for the San Francisco 49ers success over the past years, and anytime you can add a multiple Super Bowl winning player to your team is a good time. Last season Roger Craig had 1,234 yards and 11 touchdowns on the ground, he also helped in the passing game with his 47 catches for 504 yards and another 2 scores. Adding that kind of offensive powerhouse to a lackluster Buccaneer team could be just what the doctor ordered for the Yucks.

Obviously the Buccaneers current starter, Gary Anderson, will be taking a seat on the pine. But the 30-year old veteran will prove to be a valuable backup in case Craig suffers an injury. It is also unknown as to how Craig will adapt to the system, and if he can do it soon enough because Craig isn't getting any younger as he'll turn 31 mid-season in 1991. The aging back may need the help of a 943 yard 4 touchdown runner like Gary Anderson to help take some of the load off.

The Tampa Buccaneers organization has struggled to get not only big-names to come to their location, but the fans. However with, now #33, in the backfield the Buccaneers may have accomplished that in one fell swoop.

Previous Season Outcome: 7-9, No Playoffs

Projected 1991 Outcome: The Chciago Bears didn't do anything but improve in the off-season. With the aquisition of Mark Vlasic to lead them at the quarterbacks pot in front of youngster Jim Harbaugh the Bears already have a better passing game than last year. With the additions of Ed McCafferery and Herman Moore through the draft, Ron Morris will soon have a lot of competition for the #1 WR spot in Chicago. The defense remained the same starter wise with the exception of the loss of Vestee Jackson for an upgrade in Wayne Haddix. Haddix will bring a #1 quality corner to the #2 spot in Chicago to make their defense that much greater. Mark Carrier also has a year under his belt now and is expected to do big things alongside Shaun Gayle at the saftey spot. The Bears division is hardly a lock for any team as the Lions, Packers, and Vikings have not established themselves as powerhouses in recent seasons, so last year may have proved to be a mere fluke of a bad year for the Bears.

Previous Season Outcome: 10-6, Playoff Birth

Projected 1991 Outcome: The Cincinnati Bengals made a bold move in the off-season by refusing to sign cornerback Lewis Billups to the lucrative amount of money he desired. Instead the Bengals went the otherway and ended up signing Mark Lee who led the Packers in interceptions last season. Lee will be the Bengals new starting cornerback along with rookie standout, Jimmy Spencer who is set to replace Eric Thomas. Aeneas Williams is also another rookie that is being given the starting job immediately as he takes over for the departed Solomon Wilcots. Many are already stating that Williams is as good, if not, better than Wilcots before Williams has even stepped into his first real NFL game. WIthout a single starting change on the Bengals offense it's easy to say they'll be kicking on all cylinders once again in that department. But with all those changes outside of strong saftey anchor, David Fulcher, the Bengals could end up going either way defensively.

Previous Season Outcome: 12-4, Playoff Birth

Projected 1991 Outcome: The Buffalo Bills did not clinch their division thanks to the suprising play of the New England Patriots who matched their 12-4 record, but had one more division victory to put them ahead. The Bills however are ready to go back to that top spot once again in 1991. The only major difference to the entire Bills team was that they lost James Lofton to retirement. Lofton will be replaced by last year's 3rd stringer, Steve Tasker. Although Tasker will have a slew of rookie wide receivers in Raghib Ismail, Mike Pritchard, and Jeff Graham all breathing down his neck for that spot. Other than that the only other change to the Bills starting jobs was they upgraded to punter Joe Prokop (87) compared to Rick Tutne (82) who was on the team in 1990. The Bills shouldn't loose any steps offensively with the loss of Lofton as many are confident that Kelly and Thomas can certainly pick up any potential slack.

Previous Season Outcome: 9-7, No Playoffs

Projected 1991 Outcome: Last season was hopefully a fluke year for the Denver Broncos, who were just one year removed from a Super Bowl birth. The Denver Broncos finished with a respectable 9-7 record, but with the surprising success of the San Diego Chargers (12-4) and the Uplifting Kansas City Chiefs (10-6) the Broncos were left knocked out of their division for potential playoff spots. Last year Vance Johnson and Mark Jackson were developing into an exciting receiving duo as the two were leading the charts. However a mid-season hefty injury to Mark Jackson cut that short and thus started the Broncos regular season troubles. However this year Jackson is back fully healthy and expected to get off on the right foot with Elway and company. Elway's 25 touchdowns last year (24 passing, 1 rushing) proved he could still handle things. Bobby Humphrey had a solid 925 yards on the ground but the Broncos are going to need more scoring production (only 3 touchdowns) out of him this season to get over the hill and back into the playoffs. Not to mention the Broncos have every single starter on their 1990 team returning for them in 1991.

Previous Season Outcome: 7-9, No Playoffs

Projected 1991 Outcome: In 1990 the Cleveland Browns went 7-9 and fialed to make the playoffs. Although it appears that 1991 may be even worse. While the offense has remaind largerly unchanged, which some say may not be a good thing. The Cleveland Browns were absolutely gutted in the off-seasont through either retirement (Ozzie Newsome 82) or players that just refused to resign for little money, Fleix Wright (95), Thane Gash (99), Reggie Clayborn (83) leaving all destroyed the Browns secondary. While Frank Minnifield and Anthony Blaylock are certainly good corners, there is a huge drop off between the amazing saftey duo of Wright and Gash and the new duo of 2nd year Harlon Barnett (71) and rookie Charles Mincy (72). The Browns offensive line was also decimated when Ralph Tamm (88) left for a better contract as well as Grag Rakoczy (82). The only plus is that the Browns aquired Barry Word (82) in the off-season who had 700 some yards coming off the bench in Kansas City. Although with Leroy Hoard who had 1,311 yards and 13 touchdowns, as well as fullback Kevin Mack expressing a desire to change to runningback, and Eric Metcalf being utlilized in the passing game and running (418 yards last year) there really was no need to Word's addition. Instead the Browns are left gutted in their secondary, with a lot of young talent picked up in the draft, but it's all young talent that will need years of cohesion and experience to reach the previous talent mark.

Projected 1991 Outcome: In 1990 the Tampa Bay Buccaneers surprised everybody, including their fans, when they pulled out a 10-6 season that saw them garner a playoff birth. Many started saying that this season was nothing more than a fluke, and it may well have been. However with the additions through free agency that Tampa Bay made this off-season it looks like the Buccaneers are going to stay at the top of their division. Possibly the biggest move of the entire off-season was the loss of Roger Craig from San Francisco to Tampa Bay and the Buccaneers are itching at the opportunity to let him play in their offense. Not to mention for just about every player released by Tampa Bay they had a better player either fill in or sign with the team. Carl Bax leaves (81), Derek Kennard joins (83). Harry Swayne leaves (71), Harvey Salem joins (81). Winston Moss leaves (88), Tim Harris joins (89). Keith McCants leaves (74), John Grimsely joins (88). Wayne Haddix leaves (88), Tim McKyer joins (90). Odie Harris leaves (76), and Dave Duerson joins (85). However of all these transactions the three most important were easily Roger Craig, followed by the two outside linebackers that, added with MLB Eugene Marve (90) make one of the most fearsom linebacking corps in the league. Tim Harris is coming off a breakout phenome season with the Packers where he racked up 104 tackles, 10 sacks, and 7 forced fumbles. If he can bring that kind of defensive prowess to Tampa Bay they are definately on the up. Meanwhile on the other side of the field John Grimsely of the AFC Champion Houston Oilers decided to leave them and join up with the Buccaneers. There's not telling what this Tampa Bay team is capable of, but hopefully they'll remain on top fo ryears to come.

Previous Season Outcome: 7-9, No Playoffs

Projected 1991 Outcome: Last year the Phoenix Cardinals were right at the bottom of their division along with the Los Angeles Rams, at 7-9. It appears that the Cardinals have made some interesting decisions and they are worse on offense now but better at defense, so making their strengths stronger and their weakness more apparent. Whether or not this formula leads to success will have to be seen in 1991. The biggest change offensively is the loss of their starting two wide receivers in J.T. Smith (retirement) and Roy Green (free agency). That being said it will give free agent aquisition Brett Perriman (84), youngster Ricky Proehl and Ernie Jones a shot to start, meanwhile rookie Alvin Harper could also see significant playing time. The Cardinals found a solid rookie left guard in Joe Valerio (78) to replace Derek Kennard (83). Meanwhile the Cardinals completely re-vamped their defensive line, only keeping DT Jim Whaler (79) and LE Freddie Joe Nunn (94). The Cardinals picked up Jim SKow from the Bucs (85) and Shane Curry (70) meanwhile Mark Duckens will play #2 DT behind Whaler (78). They also found a near identical replacement for Anthony Bell in Winston Moss (88). The biggest defensive loss was their #2 corner, Cedric Mack (86) who wasn't replaced. Instead the team is allowing Marcus Turner his shot to fill in. William Frizzell of the champion Philadelphia Eagles left and signed to play second fiddle to Michael Zordich. Meanwhile the Phoenix Cardinals let their kicker, Al Del Greco go after he hit 28 of 36 last season in favor of a Greg Davis. The Cardinals could either remain the same with these changes or drop even further. It all depends on how willing they are to commit to their defensive scheme, and if their wide receiver corps can step it up.
