It's also on the refs to throw those guys out of the game. It seemed like every game had a spot where half of the team left the sideline for some reason. Do something, just don't let it happen.

Exactly. Ed Hochuli legit costs the Chargers a game in Denver back in '08 with an obvious blown call on Cutler fumbling the ball and life went on. I'm afraid the replacement refs would be tarred and feathered for that today.

They were both ejected, but not suspended.

It would be naive to think that the "regular" NFL officials don't have favorite teams and players. They just know to not have a facebook page with a picture of them outside of the stadium or make comments like the one alleged above. I'm not really worried about that...what I am worried about is the number of blown calls in week 2 vs. week 1. The players are sensing weakness in the officals and that is going to cause more problems in the coming weeks if something isn't done.

Let's not forget that the call he 'blew' was the rule at the time and the NFL adjusted the rules accordingly the following season.

I dont think this is right.

I think Mr.Bill is referring to the backwards pass that was called incomplete, when it should have been ruled a live ball & fumble recovery. A backwards pass has always been a live ball.

These people weren't pulled from the streets. These people have been football officials, in some cases, for decades.

There have been a few comical situations i've seen (the bad spot after the penalty is inexcusable, for example), but for the most part this story is way overblown and the officials have been competent enough that the players are still deciding the outcomes of the games.

The only time I even think about the fake refs is when something non routine happens. But to be honest, I have no confidence in the real refs to get it right in those scenarios, either.

Experienced or not that doesn't change the fact that these guys ARE plucked from the streets. These guys work Pop Warner and Lingerie Football games, one even worked a Pee Wee game earlier this week.

The NFL rules are much different than any level these guys have ever dealt with before not to mention the crews having no familiarity with each other and the exponential increase in the speed of play they have worked with in the past.

The NFL officials make mistakes too but it's pretty telling that we're having to reach back to a game in 2008 to the Hochuli error when Deadspin has articles like this...

And again.. These are just calls we can see on camera. The guys who actually play and coach the games are pretty much all in unison that the replacement officials are affecting the way the game is played and I'm more inclined to take their word for it than I am to anyone else who chooses to comment on it.

Say what you will about the old refs but I have been watching football for a long time now and last night was the first time I have ever seen a game stopped for 5 minutes so the "NFL Rules Administrator" or whatever they call it could correct the refs fuck up after ESPN called them out on it.

I have issues with all officials.

I won't pretend the real refs do a good job while the rest of you pick apart every questionable call made by the scabs.

Week 1, the scabs were fine. You had to be really reaching to take issue.

Week 2 saw some embarrassing stuff. I have a bigger problem with bad spots and things of that nature, than screwing up complicated non routine issues, because the real refs do that all of the time, too.

You will all be bitching about the real refs within two weeks of their return.

I still contend that if nobody had been told, none of you m'fers would even realize that these guys are scabs.

The players have admitted that they are able to get away with more especially in pass coverage and along the lines.

Ironically, I see this as a positive. The game is a lot more watchable when every incomplete pass or contested WR does not immediately garner an illegal contact penalty. The return of defensive back play has been a nice unintended side effect to the "fake ref" epidemic.

Soon enough this long national nightmare will be over, and you guys can go back to bitching about the regular refs whenever your favorite team loses.

First of all, there are too many rules, and too many of them are interpretative, especially when it comes to blocking and tackling. Second, the game simply moves too fast and there is too much going on in short amounts of time.

People expect 50+ year old men to interpret these complicated rules in these short bursts of time, and do a competent job?

I don't have the solution, because the player safety issues necessitate these new intricate rules, and players aren't going to get slower or weaker. But what I do know, is the game has evolved to the point that it's nearly impossible to officiate.

W2B: Everyone is exaggerating, the scab refs are not that different from regular refs. Oh by the way, this game is extremely hard to referee.
