Count it! Indiana Adds Three Recruits

Bloomington, IN - Over the past week, a lot has happened in Hoosier land; Indiana won an outright Big 10 Championship, their fan base has stretched across the nation, and they are expected to play in the National Championship game. Let's add to that list, shall we? Three more four star recruits have committed to the Indiana football squad, raising the Hoosiers' total to 24 players.

The first player is a stud. Matt Wheeler, a four star athlete from Springfield, Illinois, is a force to be reckoned with at more than one position. He played quarterback, running back, receiver, cornerback, safety, kicker, and linebacker in high school. He was a five star recruit in basketball as well, and will be playing for the Hoosiers hoops team next winter. "It's pretty intense," said Wheeler today. "The Indiana campus is hot. I can't wait to live there for four years."

Wheeler recorded 3,001 passing yards, 2,320 rushing yards, 2,154 receiving yards, 218 tackles, and 12 interceptions during his high school years. If he had focused on one position, he could probably be the top recruit in the country. (For those curious, he didn't play any position more than two years).

The second recruit, Thomas White, is a four star defense end from Gas City, Indiana. I know, right? Fucking Gas City? Anyway, that's not important. He never recorded big stats as a defense player, but that doesn't matter to recruiters because he was constantly being double or triple teamed. Opposing coaches realized that he would probably be playing college football, and they decided that they wanted him to put up the shittiest stats possible so no colleges would look at him. Why they did that is beyond me, but at least the Hoosiers took notice of his greatness. And I mean, he can't keep getting double-teamed all through college, so at some point he has to play up to his potential--stats wise, that is.

The final recruit is Charlie Ivey, a four star cornerback all the way from Washington D.C. Indiana started out the year as far down on his list as physically possible, but with intense recruiting Indiana's stock rose. Eventually (just a few weeks ago), Indiana officially became his favorite school, and after an on-campus visit he finally committed. "Anthony Thompson had me hypnotized," he said. "He had this aroma about him that said 'Hey world. I'm a great coach. Bow down to me' and that attracted me."

While in high school, Ivey recorded only 5 interceptions and 4 deflections, but shut down receivers like no other cornerback I've ever seen. In fact, in a game in which he faced star receiver James Woods (the second rated receiver in this year's class), he held James to 1 catch for -2 yards. But his lack of stats bumped him down to a four star rating.

Indiana Heads Into Bye Week Beat Down

Bloomington, IN - As Indiana heads into their much-needed bye week, it is apparent by the level of play in their last few games that they are tired, warn down, and exhausted.

"We're pooped," said coach Anthony Thompson. "We have had four or five tough games in a row, and our players are battered and bruised. We will need the two weeks to prepare for Arizona." Added Mitch Ewald, who comes in sparingly for kicking duties, "Even I'm wiped out."

The Hoosiers started their tough stretch with a huge battle with Northwestern. It came down to the wire, with Indiana making a what-just-happened Hail Mary Touchdown as time expired, giving them a miracle 31-28 win. Then they faced a struggling Michigan State team, and again the Hoosiers played poorly the entire game. They finally booted a field goal with under a minute left, again giving them a very slim victory (42-40). Their next game would be the brightest moment of this quickly-tiring team, as they dominated the second half of a 31-17 win over the Penn State Nittany Lions. "That was the tip of the ice berg," recalled Thompson. "After that game, players were definitely beat down and sore. There would be practices in which players would be collapsing by the end because of sheer exhaustion."

They ended their streak with a tough win over Purdue. It didn't look that close, but that's because Thompson finally got his backups in good enough shape for them to sub in regularly. This gave the starters much-needed rest, and they were more fit to play the rest of the game. The backups only hurt the Hoosiers winning chances, however, as most of them hadn't the needed game experience to really succeed. They still managed to win by a touchdown.

Witha bye week this week AND next week, the Hoosiers should be plenty rested for their matchup with the Arizona Wildcats.

Coach of the Year Candidates Announced

The NCAA season is drawing to a close, and it's that time of year when newspapers and analysts predict who will win all the major college football awards. Among the most discussed awards are the Heisman Trophy, Maxwell Award, and my personal favorite, the Coach of the Year Award. And yesterday, the Washington Post finally released the "official" list of people that are candidates for the COTY Award. Without further ado, I present to you the list:

Larry Blackeney, Troy
Anthony Thompson, Indiana
Gary Pinkel, Missouri
Chris Petersen, Boise State
Marcus Quistelin, South Florida


All of these coaches are fine coaches. Really, they all are. Larry Blackeney has single-handedly made a terrible Troy football team into a Top 25 team. It took Anthony Thompson just three years to turn a 3-9 Indiana Hoosiers team into a 10-1 team. Gary Pinkel is having an outstanding year with Missouri, and he has carried them to a 1-loss record and a top 25 ranking. Chris Petersen has always been fucking amazing, but this year it really shows as he's taken Boise State to the National Championship game. And rounding off the list is first-year coach Marcus Quistelin, who took over a sliding South Florida team and kept them on pace for a top 10 finish this year. My vote, obviously, would have to go with Marcus Quistelin, but I feel that Anthony Thompson is in the running also. It all comes down to whoever pays the voters the most.

Thompson Wins Coach of the Year Award

(AP) - In one of the closest ballots in recent NCAA Division 1 football history, Anthony Thompson edged out coaches Larry Blackeney and Chris Petersen for the Coach of the Year Award.

The NCAA tried a new system for voting this year, and it looks like this idea was actually successful. 500 voters--all hand-picked by the NCAA--voted for their coach of the year. That was it. No second or third place finishers this year. All you did was submit your vote for coach of the year. Because of this, only 500 points were split between the 5 candidates (usually it's between 2000 and 4000 votes total) and the results were a lot closer. Thompson won with a total of 113 votes, Larry Blackeney received 110 votes, and Chris Peterson received 103 votes. Gary Pinkel received 95 votes, and Marcus Quistelin took up the rear with 79 votes. "I am greatly honored to receive this award," Thompson said during his acceptance speech. "My friends, family, and not-so-close acquaintances made it possible for me to win this award. If it wasn't for my lovely wife, Jenna, I would never have even gotten into coaching. If it weren't for my wonderful friends, I probably would have dropped out of coaching at Indiana. And if it weren't for my enemies to churn me out, I never would have become the coach that I am today."

He rambled on for a total of 45 minutes--one of the longest speeches on record--and like many viewers I shut off the television when his speech went on for more than 5 minutes.

For Anthony Thompson, I would like to congratulate him on his success as a coach at Indiana. For the coaches who finished 2nd-5th, if Thompson loses the National Championship I think Chris Petersen will be the unofficial coach of the year. If both of them lose the National Championship, then you're all winners.

Army is officially one of the worst teams in NCAA history. Being winless for the entire season is one thing, but to only score 41 points? Through the ENTIRE SEASON? To put that into perspective, that's a total of less than 4 points per game, and even worse, Indiana averages 39.2 points per game, a total of 1.8 points less per game.............Michael Brewster of Arkansas State has thrown for 62 touchdowns this season, which is a new NCAA record. But since he has only thrown for 1046 yards, he will probably not be a candidate for the Maxwell Award........Anthony Thompson, head coach of the Indiana Hoosiers, won the Coach of the Year Award (the first award of the season).


Again, this is a one-week only setup. My computer's still being fucky, and Paint won't load at the moment. A computer guy is coming tomorrow morning at like 7, and he said he could fix it easily. But I dunno crap about computers, so I can't. Rebooting doesn't seem to work . Anyway, expect a normal recruiting update tomorrow.
