Robert Griffin III has partial tears of ACL and LCL, MRI suggests

Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III will undergo total reconstructive surgery of his right knee early Wednesday morning to repair torn anterior cruciate and lateral collateral ligaments but he is expected to be ready for the opener of the 2013 NFL regular season, according to team sources familiar with the determination made by orthopedic specialist Dr. James Andrews.

The torn ACL was diagnosed late Tuesday as a complete tear of the patella graft that was used to repair Griffin's torn ACL suffered at Baylor in 2009. A team source said Dr. Andrews likely will use a patella graft from Griffin's left knee to repair the most recent tear.

Griffin's recovery is projected at six-to-eight months, barring any setbacks, sources said. The rehabilitation plan primarily will focus on strengthening Griffin's quadriceps to help protect and help stabilize the knee, according to sources. The reconstruction of the LCL is considered a complication but sources said Dr. Andrews informed the Redskins it should rehab well during the same six-to-eight month time frame as the ACL injury.

Under this projected time frame of surgery, recovery and rehab, Griffin should be able to participate at some level during training camp in August and be ready to open the season in September, according to the sources.

QB's are going to become disposable like RB's. The shelf life will greatly shorten and I think their value $'s wise will also decrease. We are going to start seeing more turnover at QB like we see at RB.

You and Mangini are right. If a QB wants to last in the league, they need to be more like Steve Young, Aaron Rodgers.

And there's nothing more bush league in the NFL than what the Bucs do during kneeldown plays. If you were a fan of any other team you could probably call out other schemes/coaches/players but anyone that demands their guys go full speed during kneeldowns is about as high school/college of a rah rah tactic as there is in the game.

Washington should have played this like their neighbors, the Nationals. When Griffin was showing any signs of injury, especially to his knee, he should have been sat down. Yes, the playoffs are on the line, yes, it could have meant less wins. But when you have so much locked up in a young player, you don't risk it, especially against a fast, attacking defense like Seattle. Even worse is that RGIII's backup showed good progress in the times he was in, so Cousins easily could have taken the role of quarterback.

Minnesota had the same problem. Ponder was injured, his throwing arm was clearly sore, so he was benched. Ya, they lost the game, but they won't lose him for the summer because of it.
