what ever dude, its still just football...and giving fowl mouthed speeches to inflict pain doesnt deserve a lifetime ban,bounty or not. The truth is,football is really a dumb sport. By that i mean,its not that hard to learn or guys like this wouldnt be coaching. I dont like people with bad character either, but this aint no tragedy.

Huge difference between the acceptable norm of saying "Go out there and kill 'em", "Knock their heads off", or "Grind them into the dirt" and "This player has a bad ACL, target him there, and if you knock him out, you'll get extra money from the bounty."

Yes because pointing to a one game sample and forming a conclusion off of it makes perfect sense.

Not to mention that it's irrelevant whether or not bounties actually lead to more injuries. The Saints' behavior as an organization shouldn't be tolerated regardless. If there's been even a single injury that can be attributed to the bounty system / culture they had that's too many.

Point remains - it is funny how the Saints targeted the 49ers and they were the ones getting knocked out.

I think if it was just "Hit him in the ACL, its a known injury, blah blah blah", people wouldn't be as up in arms. That is why coaches hate injury reports because the other team learns what type of injury the player has and can target it. That in itself isn't new, although normally, they won't specifically name names in a pre-game speech.

However, once you add in that there was a bounty system and players were monetarily rewarded for injuring players, that is when this crosses the line. The two individually look bad, especially to someone who has never played football. But when you combine them, along with defying league rules and trying to cover it up after the fact, Williams has got to go.

4 former NFL players cite New Orleans’ bounty system in latest lawsuit over concussions

ATLANTA — The four former NFL players who sued the league on Monday in a state court in Atlanta could be leading a wave of new lawsuits that cite the New Orleans Saints’ bounty system for hard hits as evidence that pro football didn’t properly protect its players from concussions.

Legal experts and trial attorneys say they expect more complaints against the NFL to point to the Saints’ scandal after the ex-players filed suit contending the bounty system was another example that the league “explicitly relied on violence” and neglected to educate players on the dangers of concussions.

The claims give the new lawsuit an “added vitality” if attorneys can use it to bolster the idea that there’s activity in the sport that goes beyond the typical violence associated with pro football, said Paul Haagen, co-director of the Center for Sports Law and Policy at Duke University.

“It adds color” to the complaint, Haagen added. “And by raising it you hope to raise a general buzz in the public that this is an issue.”

The NFL’s investigation found that former Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams offered thousands of dollars in cash payouts for violent hits over the past three seasons, including when the team won the Super Bowl. And while the four players named in the lawsuit don’t claim to be victims of the scheme, they say it is indicative of a culture that has left them and other ex-players with debilitating conditions.

“There is nothing new or unique about what Gregg Williams said. Although the NFL has now punished Williams and the Saints, for almost its entire history the NFL glorified violent hits,” said the complaint. “It encouraged its players to think of themselves as gladiators. But, along the way, the NFL failed to educate its players about the consequences of such a win-at-all costs mentality.”
NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said any allegation that the league intentionally sought to mislead players is without merit.

“It stands in contrast to the league’s actions to better protect players and advance the science and medical understanding of the management and treatment of concussions,” he said.

The lawsuit was filed on behalf of Myron Guyton, who played for the New York Giants and New England Patriots in the 1980s and 1990s; Lomas Brown, who played for five teams over a 17-year career that ended in 2002; Jessie Small, who played for the Philadelphia Eagles, the Phoenix Cardinals and the Houston Oilers between 1989 and 1993; and Willie Whitehead, who played for the San Francisco 49ers and New Orleans Saints from 1995 to 2006.

Atlanta attorney and NFL agent Von DuBose filed the lawsuit on behalf of the four players and their wives. He said the men suffer from memory loss, headaches, depression and other symptoms characteristic of those with traumatic brain injuries. They are among more than 1,000 former NFL players suing the league, according to lawyers involved. The cases say not enough was done to inform players about the dangers of concussions in the past, and not enough is done to take care of them today.

Serious question for anyone who has played football. Do you not realize that when you get your bell rung, it's not a normal thing? I think back on the many times when I came up dizzy or didn't feel quite right and I knew that it's not a normal thing. I think it would also be safe to assume that if you knew you were getting into a sport for the long term, you would assume some risk from brain trauma after feeling this way when you get your bell rung.

Not saying the bounty hunting thing isn't bad, I'm just saying risk of head/brain injury is pretty apparent when you feel that dizziness/sting the first time.

I agree, IMO there has to be a point when an athlete realizes that running full speed and slamming yourself into another player isn't good for your body. I don't understand how former players feel justified in suing the NFL when most doctors didn't really understand the severity of concussions, so why would the NFL? When I was young if you got a concussion you just kept playing and if it was really bad you sat out until the your head cleared. IDK, at some point people have to realize that some jobs come with inherent risk. I see most of these law suits as money grabs.

Current players and fans can cry and complain about the rule changes and how Goodell was extreme in his punishment of the Saints, but these lawsuits are why he has to do this. The league is going to have to defend itself in the courtroom and changing rules and punishing offenders is the most basic way to do that.
