I'm not arguing that. My first post included fighters who have had concussions and my feelings on how I dislike staged fights and wish they would go away.

My point is the NHL's concussion issue has little to do with fighting these days since fighting in the NHL is going down and will probably be next to dead if the trend continues.

To fight is a choice, to be blindside hit is not. Did Marc Savard have a choice when Cooke elbowed him in the head? No. Did Derek Boogaard have a choice to be a NHL fighter or not? Yes. NHL fighters, players, are grown adult aware of the danger the put themselves in by playing the game....it's part of the reason why they are paid very great salaries.

Am I going to eliminate (what I would guess) 5-10% of pro hockey players careers? Take away their choice to make decisions on how they want to treat their bodies and make their living? I don't think it's right.

How do you take away their living and allow combat sport to exist? How do you allow ice road truckers, off shore drillers and the like to perform their jobs? There is risk of death in these positions, I suppose we should ban that line of work? No, it serves purpose am I right? What about circus performers, stuntmen for movies, those crazy assholes doing tricks in plane shows? The list could go on for pages and pages if you want entertainment specific examples.


I'm sure NHL fighters would much rather make 50K a year selling car insurance because their careers were taken away by people who don't even play the game and would rather them not get hurt.

I'd much rather see action against illegal play that generates a much higher rate of head injury and involves no choice for the victim.

This is more interesting than NFL. As fighting would seem to be purely extra curricular.
Ive heard fans say how integral fighting is to Hockey but didnt agree...then I saw some live games and realized how much craziness happens away from puck.I do have to say unless you watch the sport or participate in its VERY difficult to judge just what it means to the sport.

That said any rattling of the head in a sport already heavy on collisions is going to be doubly bad. Ive seen guys get dropped and land pretty flush on there head. Repeated blows when your "ok" but not KOd is massively dangerous. Your brain is in a bowl of jello and doesn't discriminate between a punch and a hard check.

All these guys signed up for head trauma. Just to what extent we purposely allow these guys to shorten there lives and well beings is going to be debated for years. I dont think there's any question though eliminating fighting in Hockey would be the same as eliminating headblows on the QB and hits on WRs. It may seem "unnecessary" which is fine but how can one argue it doesnt fundamentally change the nature of the game ?
