I actually like hockey, but the fighting aspect of it is so undeniably useless and corny. Let's take some 4th-line scrub, and send him after their team's 4th-line scrub, and hope we can get a spark? I just don't see the need to allow fighting as a part of the game. It makes hockey look immature.

Quite honestly the NHL has bigger concussion causes to sort out before tackling the myriad of issues with fighting. Trying to legislate fighting out of the game is going to be an absolute mammoth task which will only end up halting other improvements. Make the ice bigger/pads softer/helmets better/whatever since these are the types of solutions to almost every concussion which has occured this season.

FYI DSpydr your insinuation that fighting wouldn't get you fired up is a culturally-biased interpretation of a completely different sporting culture. Whether fighting is a fabric of the game's future or not, players and coaches in the NHL all currently subscribe and support the doctrine that fighting shifts momentum. - The NHL agrees head trauma is bad and is going to great lengths to prevent, treat and reduce it ...

- The NHL allowing players to punch each other on ice is counterproductive to their efforts to reduce/prevent head trauma

- Thus, the NHL should eliminate fighting as part of their effort to reduce/prevent head trauma

More retarded hockey fan bullshit. The NFL tries to regulate h2h hits. They still happen. Hitting is intrisically connected to the sport of football. h2h will happen in football. Checking etc is intrinsically tied to the sport of hockey. As a result of these collisions h2h hits will happen as a natural result of the game being played and the function of the game(scoring goals..or in this case checking to stop them). The NHL tries to limit those as the NFL has tried to reduce the ones in their sport.

Fighting is not tied to the natural action of the game because the game action actually stops when the fight occurs.

Irrellevant for the simple fact the hit you just described occurs during normal course of game action. Fighting does not as game action actually stops for the fight.

Irrellevant even more now that most players relaize knocking someone out is bad and most call for help if they know a player needs it right away...regardless of what team they are on.

The situation you just described is more closely related to a legally check in hockey....which no one has ever said should be banned..only regulated more closely..the same way the NFL is trying to regulate the hit you just described above more closely.

This fighting debate reminds me of typical religion debates. On one side you have the followers who have accepted certain ideologies that others who don't follow find useless. As an outsider I really don't see the point of fighting in hockey, as there are more productive ways to "fire up" your teammates and fans. Having said that though I'm sure it could be marginalized even more, which probably would be better for all involved. I have to believe the sport could survive.

It's almost as if ... gasp ... there is mounds of scientific evidence linking head trauma with depression and suicide. I am sure Derek Boogard having to lock himself in his Manhattan apartment for days or weeks at a time because his head hurt had little to do with why or how he became depressed.

People talk about it in football all the time.

Look at boxers. Ali is a vegetable. Spinks is basically a functioning retard...It's not just about suicides. It's about long term effects. No one is saying we need to see more Dave Dureson's before something is valid. We already have enough Jim McMahons who can't remember their playing careers to know that even if you don't kill yourself brain trauma, whether accumulated or acute, is still bad.

The NHL "taking brain trauma seriously" yet still allowing fighting, something that happens outside of actual ame action(unlike a h2h hit), is fucking retarded and backwards.

MMA is still young enough for the most part as well to where we may not see the ramifications of that for a while. However, yet again fighting is needed to win a fight. Fighting is not needed to win a hockey game so the combat sports comparison to hockey is still bad.

This thread took a wrong turn right about post #2 when the word concussion was paired up with fighting. If certain posters were really interested in reducing concussions they would be raving about a real problem such as the game being too fast or one of the other potential explanations.

The NHL is going through a serious crisis trying to figure out how to minimize the incredible dangers associated with illegal and even completely legal checking. The argument that fighting is a major flashpoint is a media fallacy spurred on by the tragic coincidence which played out in the Summer.

This is ridiculous. I'm convinced hockey fans comprised the NFL's head injury committee a few years ago when they were trying to argue that repeated blows to the head have no scientific backing in relation to suicide, depression, and neurological issues.



I love the hockey "logic" fighting is allowed in combat sports where fighting is needed to obtain an outcome so fighting should be allowed in hockey....even though fighting isn't needed to obtain an outcome in a hockey game.

I don't think anyone has even tried to claim that fighting is the sole cause of concussions in hockey, or even the primary cause of them.

What we are saying ... in plain English for the slow ... is that fighting certainly can't help reduce concussions, which is the league's objective, so why even have them?

Yes, there are a variety of other reasons for this concussion "epidemic" ... but it's being intentionally hard headed to sit here and say fighting has NOTHING to do with them.

Whether or not it's the primary cause, that doesn't change the fact that getting punched in the face DOES NOT HELP REDUCE CONCUSSIONS therefore RUNS COUNTER TO THE LEAGUE'S GOAL. Whether the league or its players realize that or not, fighting does more harm than good.

Please divulge your thoughts on a switch from 85 to 100 or even 93 feet wide ice. Do you think the shoulder pads NHL players currently wear need reconsideration? Should the two-line pass be re-introduced? These are the concussion hot points, but I imagine you have given them very little thought; deciding instead to focus on the marginal issue which has been spun out of control by the media and the uninformed sports fan.
