If the NHL went to bigger ice, you would see more speed but less violent hits because players have more space to move around. These open ice hits would be gone, and players can brace themselves for board hits.

I never said there would be "more" in the terms of quantity. I said the hits would be worse because of the increased speed on the ice. Especially in terms of the way American hockey is played/taught right now. Maybe it switches over eventually and we'd see more Olympic style results but for the short term I think while you'd see an overall decrease in the amount of hits...the big hits that did connect would be more "devastating".

If you open up the ice, I don't think two line is needed. The defence already have to stay back more because if they don't, they would get burned badly with the speed the forwards could get with the extra space. So in terms of violent hits, I don't think it would do much to leave it as it is. I think what you would see is more centre's playing back roles, and more trap style systems forcing players to the boards.

I have been misunderstood. I think the two-line rule is a nightmare for player safety. My only point of contention is whether the NHL would be any fun on 100 foot ice due to the unbelievabe skill and speed of today's stars (and if it is not) whether the two-line rule could make it more enjoyable without making it more dangerous. I would propose for the sake of argument that defences would have to be so passive to cover the increased space that the blueline overcrowding would not be a realistic occurence.

As a sidenote, is someone really arguing that bigger ice leads to a faster game in any way? When overwhelming empirical evidence reveals it does not. Comical.

NHL recognizes this, and takes measures with gameplay to minimize head trauma
NHL also still allows fighting, which puts players at FURTHER risk of head trauma than is already in the game.
Fighting should be eliminated to decrease the risk of head trauma.

When did these pads become this hard plastic? That shit doesn't even seem that protective, it is just a hard shell pretty much. Can't we find a better and more functional design for some foam body armor at this point?

As for the helmets, they do seem really thin and unprotective, especially in the back of the head, but there's not much you can do about a knee to the back of the head like what happened with Briere and Simmonds. That's a fluke and that is gonna happen in any sport, including even baseball or basketball. Accidental knee to the head is usually going to result in a concussion no matter what.

This about sums it up in terms of equipment and the boards.

I should pull out my first set of shoulder pads and the next set I have. It is night and day the difference and I played house league hockey. Went from basically the first set that cherry showed to close to the second set. Why? Because they said the first set wasn't acceptable.

I guess it's understandabe that the guys who are these days being asked to jump in front of 95+mph slap shots would want want a lot of protection relative to what the old school players needed but since the NHL is one of the elite sports leagues in the world and expense is hardly an issue for these players you've got to imagine someone can come up with a compromise which is good for the general wear of being in the NHL and doesn't come with a devastating counter-effect to those who take a pad to the head.

With helmets, I'm not sure what they can do. Hockey players really need to be able to see as much as possible so a football style helmet would be out of the equation. Players could do with wearing them properly though, quite a few loose chin straps around the league.
