NFL also still allows lineman , backs , and most others to bash there heads into each other 60 times a game. which puts players at FURTHER risk of head trauma than is already in the game.

Full on blocking and helmet to helmet contact should be eliminated to decrease the risk of head trauma.

Current rules have already changed the way NFL has played. Going back to lineman not being able to extend there hands would eliminate much of the trauma being dealt out.


The only point of contention is how integral fighting is to the sport. It may seem bat shit retarded to anyone not familiar with Hockey but clearly its so much a part of the game and certainly fandom that the NHL refuses to do anything about it for mostly financial reasons. But why is that specific to the NHL ?
Why does boxing allow standing 8 counts or count to 10 to begin with ? The repeated blows cause DEATHS every year and arent necessary but it still happens.

Whats integral is subjective..the only thing all these governing bodies care about even in light of the new information is "how much violence can we still allow while not hurting our image or bottom line". If they "cared" about head trauma the sports would be banned outright plain and simple.

All casual and non fans say its meaningless all the hockey fans seem to say its part of the game. Why are the casuals under the assumption they know better ?

Here's a good example of how fighting changed a game, in the playoffs.

Pittsburgh's down 3-0 to Philly at home. Carcillo and Talbot square off and Carcillo drops Talbot. The Penguins score :14 after the fight. Penguins go on to win 5-3 and the series. This game kept the Flyers from taking the game back to Philly and potentially sway the series in the Flyers direction. If that'd happen you may have been looking at the Red Wings being back-to-back Champions.

Daniel Carcillo gave the revved-up fans even more reason to cheer when he squared off against Talbot early in the second. Carcillo sent Talbot to the ice with a couple hard rights and the Flyers’ bench and crowd went wild.

Perhaps that served as a wake-up call for the Penguins, however. They controlled the game the rest of the way.

Teams comprised entirely of skill players who by the way, mostly looked disengaged and flat for the majority of the tournament. To me, this makes it look like aggressive play (up to and including fighting) even gets the NHL's point whores going.

As for the playoffs, they are as tense as any sporting situation in the world, everyone except Alex Semin is already amped up and generally I imagine they must also be dreadfully afraid of being the guy that takes the penalty that costs his team the season.

I will however give you this example from 2007 which was discussed in the NYT trilogy on the life and death of Derek Boogard. With less than a minute to go and the Wild having secured a victory the Anaheim Ducks began to look to "send a message". Everyone could tell there was bad intentions in mind and then the Boogeyman was sent out for a shift to police the situation. Sure enough those final 40 seconds were played out without incident. Sideshow to the game my arse.

I cant imagine the history of the NFL without Lott , Atwater , Butkus , Lambert , LT and Deacons nasty hits on guys. There are men in every physical sports who change the complexion of what plays are called and how a defense is approached by there physical presence. A massive chunk of what those guys used to be able to do has been eliminated.
The game has directly changed.

Even with super minimal knowledge of Hockey I know those "enforcers" immediately change the tactics of the opposing team , the way start players are dealt with , and the overall aggression of either team.

Different things get people fired up. I'm not going to argue that other things could have gotten them fired up, but it just so happens fighting is a big thing that does in hockey. Big hits, sick goals, fighting. They all can get you fired up. I know I've felt it in the 15 years I've played hockey.

Yeah I mean it's the same in football, you hate seeing these knock out shots now that we know what is at stake for the player getting hit but growing up those are the kinds of shots we'd try to deliver on the other team to FIRE UP our teammates. In Pee Wee football we even got helmet stickers for "de-cleaters" lol.

So it's hard to change a culture that glorifies violence while at the same time harnessing that violence into a more humane atmosphere.
