[PS3] Sony's PS3 Security is Epic Fail

Considering how quickly wii and 360 were modded and how easy its been since to get backed up games running, ps3 is fort Knox.
I haven't seen any xbmc/boxee running on any of the consoles so the homebrew crowd got slapped around this gen. Only thing that really counts is playing backups and ps3 is not only expensive but devoid of any easy stable solution. Failure should be nowhere near the ps3 name (outside of sales /games /marketing of course )

I'm not sure if Berowsk was referring to me but I'm not "upset" about the PS3 getting hacked. My issues are with the fact that the whole "story" makes it seem like the PS3 is easier to hack than the other consoles, hence the "Epic Fail" tag line. My other issue is the level of celebrity these little bitch ass, no pussy getting, basement dwellers seem to get for devoting their lives to cheating pieces of electronics.

The fact that they have these symposiums where people applaud their efforts is beyond pathetic. I'm guessing the people in attendance are are very similar to that fucking loser that asked the dumb ass WoW question at this years past E3.

The "epic fail" comes from the simple fact that Sony essentially handed them the keys to the PS3's OS. It really isn't a big deal as it's all a bit tongue-in-cheek.

its not illegal to explore the loopholes in a system. People do it to MS products too and not just the 360. are you mad at them as well? No....your just mad cause someone is ragging on your ps3.

Famed hacker George "GeoHot" Hotz, who among other things helped crack the iPhone, reckons he's found what are essentially the keys to the PlayStation 3. And has posted them online for the world to see.

While a group claimed last week that they'd done much the same thing, and were in the process of releasing tools to allow people to install Linux on their system, GeoHot has gone a step further and simply published the PS3's "root key".

The root key is a signature of sorts, that lets the PS3 know that the program that's about to run on the console is a legitimate piece of software. If it's now out there, then once people start messing around with it, they'll be able to whip up anything - be that custom software or pirated games - and trick the console into thinking it's OK to load.

Crucially, because this key lies at the very heart of the PS3 hardware itself, it appears that if it has been cracked, it will be almost impossible to repair (even via firmware updates), as altering the existing key would run the risk of rendering all existing PS3 software inoperable.

I think your frustration with hackers may be a bit misguided, Twigg.

The really good ones like fail0verflow, Geohot, and others aren't typically in the hacking game to get a bunch of freebies and pirate the shit out of everything.

In fact, the world of tech consulting is dominated by hackers, paid by companies to break into their products to give them a better idea on how to clean up the loopholes.

Are these guys nerds? Probably. Do they "get less pussy"? Maybe, although I'm inclined to believe they get nerdgirl's left and right at these conventions.

In the end, the good ones do this as a challenge, and it rarely has the end goal of being able to steal. Granted, them releasing their tools will have that end result, but they can't control what others do after them.

Am I bit of a nerd? I guess because I love games I am? My video game collection is absurd. I don't boast about shit. Several people have asked me how many games I own over the years and I have answered. I don't go around saying "Look at me! I have hundreds of games! I'm fucking awesome!" But I also find it funny how people automatically equate gaming with nerddom. But when fellow gamers do? Interesting.

I also do tons of other shit. I run all the times, love football, movies, hanging out with friends, basketball, playing with my dogs, going out to restaurants, etc.

I also find it "ironic" that you mention me complaining yet every chance you get you mention how much Madden sucks, to the point that it's in your fucking avatar. We get it bro.

But these guys are the stereotypical hacker dorks. Not only do they probably never get ass but it doesn't look like they haven't seen the sun in years. And the fact that they are completely proud of it says a lot.
