True, but the over-the-top heel wigger character needed to be toned down in order to take advantage of his rise in popularity, because a parody character like that doesn't really have legs and would fail long term if positioned at the top.

They are in a tough spot. They can't turn him heel, they just can't. But nothing they can do (and they've tried everything) can make the people who hate him stop hating him.

He's been at the top for nearly a decade. His first wave of fans has probably moved on by now, and the second wave is clearly still into him. How long can it last?

Whatever, the dude genuinely works his ass off and deserves whatever success he gets. Good for him.

I have no problem with Cena. He's a hard worker, the kids love him ... and I believe he's genuine. I don't find him that interesting, but Punk owes him. Cena helped MITB be the PPV of 2010. Punk was the star, but he needed a co-star ... and Cena pulled it off.

For as much respect Cena deserves for being a workhorse, his character is just way too fucking bland.

I realize they won't turn him heel (he means way too much to them as a face), but god damn is he vanilla. He needs some type of edge to him because otherwise, he's just some goofy schmuck who has no reason to give a shit, no fire.

Wow. I saw a video of two Ryder segments on another board. That poor, poor guy. You'd think the worst thing they could do to a guy who they were ignoring and got over despite them was ignore him even more. Nope. They've one-upped themselves on being just mean bastards. Kudos.

Cena is a boyscout in an era where that shit doesn't fly. He'd be over like gangbusters in a 70s/80s crowd. Maybe even early 90s, ala Lex Luger. You do something for so long and people get bored with it. That's why Hogan turned and re-invented himself 1,000x over. The E can't do that with the lack of a top selling face, so just let Cena flounder out there some more. It's been that way since the first "Rated R Superstar" run where people really started to hate him. And all the WWE does is acknowledge it. John Cena is the most controversial whatever since sliced bread. Nobody cares. It's like saying Jerry Jones needs to be less involved with the Cowboys. At this point, that's just something people are going to need to accept.

Cena is essentially baby face Sting from late 80's and early 90's.

Overly likable, good guy in real life, work ethic through the roof, can put on a good match...

Back then though, people liked the wholesome baby faces with top end charisma.

Now, we've been through ECW, the nWo, and the Attitude Era where fans were conditioned to love good heels, love guys in the gray, and be generally ambivalent to the good guys...the heels and the guys in the gray have so much more depth to their character than the black and white good guys.

I think Cena gets shit on far too much...listen, he's not my cup of tea, but I can't boo Cena...just as a wrestling fan, boo'ing Cena is pretty disrespectful, just like cheering a heel is disrespectful. If you want to appreciate a heel or face...you give them their appropriate cheer/boo. If you don't...just sit on your hands.

Ever since the One Night Stand match against RVD, I've seen Cena in a different light. Just a genuine good dude, will do anything for the business, will work his ass off with the stiffest stiff (most of the time), doesn't take himself seriously at all...he's not super talented in the ring, and I don't like his character, but I'm not going to boo him and hate on'em. Kids and ladies love the guy. Easily one of the biggest sellers of merch. Good for him.

Boo'ing Cena for the majority of his career has been disrespectful at worst, and trying to be a smarky cunt at best...they've only really recently come around on just going with it for his feud with the Rock.

Its kind of like the WHAT? chant...95% of the people in the audience doesn't even know who started it or when it began, but say it anyway.

You overestimate the intelligence of the GenPop.
