Trips should have spent the last few weeks calling out Taker to face him at WM. The main talking point should have been how he came so close to beating him last year, and how he knows he can do it this year.
Finally Taker shows up, and says no, because "you already tapped". Trips snaps and beats the shit out of him...holds the sledgehammer over his head, but stops short, grabs the mic, and says that he won't just end the streak at WM, but he'll also finish off Taker for good. Now Taker actually has real motivation to accept the match.
At some point Trips can name HBK the ref if that's what they want to do, to really put the idea over that he is so desperate to win, that he is assigning his best friend to call the match. HBK hints strongly that he will screw Taker, but of course ends up calling it down the middle in the end.
Boom. That's all you need.
Easy, makes sense, gets the story over, and makes it look like beating Taker is the most important thing in Trips life. And the three guys involved here are so super talented in getting their stories over that they can make that work in their sleep.
Why reinvent the wheel? The best wrestling stories are the ones you've seen a thousand times, you just add a new wrinkle now & then or re do them when people have forgotten about them.
