What do you guys think the Brewers should do about the 2B/3B/SS situation?
Rickie Weeks is out 3-6 weeks with a severe ankle sprain. The Brewers put him on the 15 day DL and called up 25 year old Eric Farris (his minor league #'s: .256 AVG, .308 OBP, .665 OPS, 6 HR, 14 SB, 6 CS)
I don't think there is anyway that Farris can be playing 2B for us down the stretch, especially when every game is going to be important.
Now, they also traded for Felipe Lopez today. He hasn't been relevant since 09 when he was with the Brewers (.320 AVG in 66 G) but he was awful in 2010 and 2011. He is being assigned to AAA Nashville tomorrow (guessing they will evaluate come Sunday)
Now, the trade market at 2B is awfully weak with Adam Kennedy, and Jamey Carroll being the biggest options available. Would you go and get Carroll (knowing the price is probably going to be higher than it should) would you go with Kennedy who is hitting .253 with 7 HR's this season for SEA, or would you stick with a Lopez/Counsell type platoon?
And the Brewers still have weakness at SS and 3B.
Brewers SS: Betancourt: .255 AVG, 7 HR, 38 RBI, .274 OBP, -0.5 WAR: .292 AVG in July
Brewers 3B: McGehee: .228 AVG, 5 HR, 41 RBI, .280 OBP, -0.4 WAR: .252 AVG in July
Betancourt has had a great post-AS break so far, but his defense just completely sucks. I don't think you can depend on Betancourt when the games matter. This is why I would replace him.
The 3B/SS market is also pretty weak though. Brendan Ryan, Clint Barmes, and Rafael Furcal are probably the names that are available for SS. Omar Infante could probably be had at 3B, but who knows.
So, if you were Doug Melvin, how would you fix the 2B/3B/SS problem? Just curious what other people think they should do.
My solution?
2B: Felipe Lopez/Josh Wilson
3B: Taylor Green/Casey McGehee
SS: Rafael Furcal/Yuniesky Betancourt
I would give Lopez a try at 2B. He cannot be worse than Counsell or Farris and has had success with the Brewers in the past. He is also a switch-hitter.
I would also try and get Furcal. When healthy, this guy is easily a 3-4 WAR type player and just last year he hit .300 with an OBP of .360+ The past week, he has hit nearly .400 and if this guy can return to his old form, he can be a great piece to go grab at the deadline. I also wouldn't mind Barmes. Either one would work for me.
Taylor Green is a prospect in AAA for the Brewers. He used to be a pretty big prospect but then he struggled in AA for awhile, and was injured for a season. So far in AAA he is hitting: .330 AVG, 17 HR, 67 RBI, .990 OPS, 43 BB, 55 K
He is also only 24 years old.
I was just wondering what other people/brewer fans think Melvin should do at these spots. It's going to be interesting to see what happens the next 72 hours.
