If I had the option of paying Crawford or Reyes the money that Boston gave Crawford...it'd be Reyes 9 times out of 10. Their games are similar with the biggest exceptions being Reyes plays the more important position, excels at hitting lead off and has the history of leg issues.

Probably a bigger risk, but IMO, a much bigger reward.

You can find a left fielder who provides a lot of speed with even a little bit of pop in his bat or can hit for a good average...he wouldn't be worth $16 mil per. Not too often you can find a SS who can hit for double digit dingers, has the speed to steal 50 bases and have double digit triples while hitting close to .300 who happens to be a great fielder with a cannon for an arm. Of course, Reyes' main statistical problem over the years has been a sagging OBP, if that's what you go for.

From the Tigers perspective, Reyes could be the piece that puts us into the playoffs. That's worth quite a bit.

Would I turn around and hand him a 7 year deal? Eh, not sure. You could let him walk and collect the draft picks. Assuing it takes a package of 3 prospects to get him, getting 2 draft picks back isn't a bad deal (IMO), assuming he gets us into the playoffs.

Brewers need a shortstop bad. We cannot be sending out Betancourt at SS every single day. Reyes would be a perfect fit, but we don't have anymore good prospects to really give. What would the Mets want in return for Reyes? I'm guessing it would have to be a couple good prospects considering they could just let him walk and get 2 picks for him down the road.

Any other SS that might be available at the trade deadline? If the Dodgers are out of the race, I could see them shipping out Rafael Furcal. He makes over 12 million this year and is doing pretty bad this season.

Rafael Furcal and Jack Wilson seem like the most likely trade targets for Milwaukee.

I would love adding Furcal, but I don't know if they would have the budget for him. If the Brewers would pick up his whole contract, I highly doubt it would cost a lot to get him.

This lineup would look pretty good though:

3. Braun LF
4. Fielder 1B
5. Hart RF
6. McGehee 3B
7. Lucroy C
8. Pitcher
9. Morgan CF

Would love having another leadoff hitter at #9 because he could get on base for the top of the order.

Here are some updates today courtesy of MLBTradeRumors.com. All credit to them.

In a radio appearance on the Mut & Merloni Show today, Peter Gammons noted the lack of top-quality arms available at this year's trade deadline. Gammons said a pitching-needy team like the Yankees would have to look at pitchers like Brett Myers or Edwin Jackson, while he shoots down the idea that Felix Hernandez, Francisco Liriano or any of the Athletics' young arms would be on the market. WEEI's Jerry Spar has the full transcript of Gammons' appearance here.

"You will not see a major move this year," Phillies GM Ruben Amaro tells Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com about his team's trade deadline plans. Amaro feels the Phils are already good enough to compete and it's just a matter of the club finding its peak form. He also notes that the team has very little payroll flexibility, but "for $170 MM-plus, we should be good enough to be a World Series contender.”

"Hideki Matsui's future is cloudy" with the A's, but the veteran may get one more stint of regular playing time to see if he can turn around his disappointing season. As Slusser notes, Matsui has been a better hitter in the second half of the season (a career .855 OPS after the All-Star break), but the team might not want to wait that long. I'd suggest Oakland could probably trade Matsui to a contender for a low-profile prospect rather than release him for nothing.

While the A's are struggling right now, "I don't see Billy Beane pulling the plug in early June no matter how many injuries they've absorbed, or even if Anderson does need Tommy John surgery." Slusser notes that "Josh Willingham's name is definitely out there" in terms of trade rumors.

The Yankees "don't want to release [Jorge Posada] at all," but they may be forced into such a move if Posada's hitting doesn't pick up by the All-Star Break, writes ESPNNewYork.com's Ian O'Connor. For now, there is no talk of a Posada release since the club wants to keep him on the roster until Derek Jeter reaches the 3000-hit plateau. Of course, baseball is the last thing on Posada's mind today as his 11-year-old son underwent his latest surgery to attempt to correct a birth defect in his skull. We at MLBTR send our best wishes to the entire Posada family.

Can the Mets afford the fan backlash that will come from trading Jose Reyes? Brian Costa of the Wall Street Journal asks the question, and also gets this interesting quote from author Vince Gennaro: "The odds that this is the new [Reyes] and that he's going to have a five-year run that even remotely resembles this are miniscule....But that's not where the fan base is going to come from. They're going to look at this as one more sign, if he gets dealt, of a lack of commitment by ownership."

The Mets may explore moving in the fences at Citi Field this winter, reports Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork.com. “There’s always going to be a preferred class, whether it’s pitchers or hitters, in situations like this, but I want to make sure it’s a fair ballpark,” said GM Sandy Alderson.

The Mets are willing to eat some of Beltran's $18.5MM salary in order to get quality prospects in return, tweets SI.com's Jon Heyman. Approximately $11.4MM is still owed to him this year.

Dylan Hernandez of The Los Angeles Times reports that the Dodgers have signed second round pick Alex Santana (on Twitter). MLB's slot recommendation for the 73rd overall pick is approximately $500K.

Orioles' scouting director Joe Jordan spoke to MLB.com's Britt Ghiroli about this week's draft, saying they "don’t expect" to set any bonus records for first rounder Dylan Bundy. You can see Baltimore's five largest amateur signing bonuses here.

Danny Hultzen (Mariners), Taylor Jungmann (Brewers) and Tyler Anderson (Rockies) are among the 2011 draftees who could make an impact in the Major Leagues before long, according to MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo.

We’re looking forward to seeing pitchers like Hultzen in the big leagues, but building a rotation through the draft is harder than it seems, as Tom Verducci shows at SI.com. Even first rounders have a high rate of failure, Verducci explains.

Former first rounder Scott Kazmir has a 15.15 ERA with a 13K/16BB ratio in Triple-A, so it appears that it's only a matter of time before the Angels release him, according to Mike DiGiovanna of the LA Times.

Jim Bowden of ESPN.com explains that he would pursue a two-year, $30MM extension with David Ortiz if he were running the Red Sox. Big Papi's consistency, history of health and hot bat all figure in to Bowden's analysis. Ortiz has a .326/.394/.612 line with 15 homers.

Interesting note on Kazmir- how he has fallen off the face of the earth so quickly. Some team will take a chance on him, but it looks like his problems extend beyond any simple explanation.

Especially since the Yankees are one of the few teams who could afford to pay the vesting option which Rodriguez is sure to hit. Though with Soriano on the shelf, he probably will not opt out of his contract, so the Yankees might stay away.
