WEST TEXAS OUTLAWS (5-5, 3-2)
VS.
UL MONROE WARHAWKS (5-5, 3-2)

Week_14.png

Trailing 17-7 midway through the 3rd quarter, the Outlaws showed tremendous resolve on Saturday, shifting momentum their way for the remainder of the game. 21 unanswered points later, the team left the field victorious, and bowl eligible for the second straight season after downing the Warhawks 28-17. But the win came with a steep price, as starters Jared Ingram (CB), Nathan Hills (TE), and defensive leader Chris Kiniry (OLB) were lost for multiple weeks due to injuries.

Charles Dickson had one of his better performances of the season, completing 17 of 32 passes for 240 yards, one touchdown, and one interception, and also reaching the endzone on the ground on his way to being named player of the game. Max Drew also made a healthy contribution to the winning effort, rushing for 120 yards and a score off 27 carries, while backup Jonathan Kaplan had six carries for 29 yards and a TD. Defensively, the Outlaws recorded two sacks, forced two turnovers, limited the Warhawks to just four successful conversions on thirteen 3rd down tries, and held them to 10 points in four redzone trips. But the big question is how much the team will be impacted in next week's season finale by the loss of three of the team's starters. Jared Ingram (CB) and Nathan Hills (TE) have been lost for the rest of the year with a broken wirst and torn pectoral respectively, while junior Chris Kiniry (OLB) has an outside shot at returning for the team's bowl game (should they get a bid) after pulling his hamstring. Hills has been a decent contributor to the passing game, where he has 21 catches for 229 yards and a score, but he'll be primarily missed as a blocker for Max Drew and the running game. Meanwhile, Kiniry and Ingram have combined for 106 tackles this season, and are largely considered to be the leaders of the defense.

As for the Warhawks, junior quarterback Kolton Browning completed 13 of 23 passes for 134 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. Leading the receiving corps was Tavarese Maye, who had four catches for 57 yards and two TDs. As for the ground game, Browning and junior runningback Jyruss Edwards rushed for a respectable 139 yards off 33 carries, but the team struggled mightily in the redzone. While the Outlaws scored touchdowns in all four of their redzone trips, UL Monroe was held to just ten points inside the 20, ultimately dooming them to their sixth loss of the season.

After suffering their third loss in the last four games, the Warhawks will remain at home next week as they play host to in-state rival UL Lafayette (4-7, 3-3) in their season finale. Meanwhile, the Outlaws will return home for the first time in three weeks to take on in-state rival Texas State (3-8, 2-4), where they hope to not only strengthen their chances for a bowl bid in the offseason, but also improve upon the team's 6-6 mark from last season.

WEEK FIFTEEN
-RIVALRY GAME-

Texas_St.png
WTU.png

TEXAS ST. BOBCATS (3-8, 2-4)
VS.
WEST TEXAS OUTLAWS (6-5, 4-2)

Week_15.png

In what is quickly developing into one of the most exciting rivalries in the Sun Belt conference, West Texas played host to the in-state rival Bobcats to wrap up their 2012 regular season. And after a back-and-forth game that saw three lead changes, it was the unexpected play of backup tight end Steve Nugent who won the game in his relief role for injured starter Nathan Hills, catching a 41-yard TD pass in the final minutes of the 4th quarter to give the Outlaws a 28-24 victory, and all but guarantee the team their first bowl bid in school history.

Much-maligned quarterback Charles Dickson had a decent day under center, completing 13 of 25 passes for 162 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. Michael Maynard, the team's leading receiver this year, had five catches for 65 yards, but it was Steven Nugent (pictured above) who stole the show, catching six balls for 84 yards and his first two touchdowns of the season. The performance gives Nugent 16 catches for 250 yards on the year, eclipsing starter Nathan Hills even in limited play. Groundwise, the dynamic duo of Max Drew and Jonathan Kaplan also did their part, combining for 150 yards and two scores off 29 carries. As for the defense, senior Jason Guidry (DE) had his best performance of the year, recording 11 tackles and an incredible three sacks. Junior Tom Terry (MLB) also had a great game, racking up ten tackles and a sack. As a whole, the Outlaws had a solid outing on defense despite not forcing any turnovers. Texas State was held to just 213 total yards, including a pitiful 46 yards through the air, and were limited to 17 offensive points in the loss.

"I'm really proud of this team, can't say enough about them," said head coach Major Applewhite after the game. "We've overcome our fair share of injuries and bad luck this season, lived through some heartbreaking losses, and still improved as a team from a year ago. I just hope that seven wins is enough to get us into the postseason, because these guys, especially the seniors, deserve it."

On the other side of the ball, true sophomore Chad Thibodeaux had another miserable day at quarterback, completing just 7 of 27 passes for 46 yards in the loss. Senior runningback Mitchell Ramirez led the offensive effort, rushing for 107 yards and a touchdown off 22 carries for an average of 4.8 yards per touch. On the other side of the ball, senior Mario Lloyd (FS) returned an interception 24 yards to the endzone, but not even a defensive touchdown was enough to lift the team to victory.

In stark contrast to WTU's four-game winning streak to end the season, the Bobcats dropped their last four games of the year to finish with a record of 3-9 (2-5). Still, they showed improvement after finishing last season 1-11 (1-7). As for the Outlaws, all signs point to the team being bowl bound for the first time in school history. The only questions are where will they end up, and who will they face?

I've decided I no longer like the way the game is handling the Heisman. For some reason, runningbacks are dominating the list, and what's weird is that after looking at the stats, it's not even the best runningbacks. Guys like Tony Gregory (Virginia Tech), DeAnthony Thomas (Oregon), and Kenny Miles (South Carolina) have no business being Heisman contenders.

I'm always looking for ways to increase participation in my dynasties, so with that in mind, I've decided to hand-pick the Heisman finalists for every season beginning now, and post a poll of the 3-5 guys who deserve consideration. The winner will be determined by you, in a secret poll to add suspense. I'll be posting the poll following my report on the conference championship weekend.

CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP WEEKEND

Last year, Notre Dame capped off a 9-3 season with a surprising victory over unbeaten #3 Pitt to win the Big East title, and followed it up with a 20-14 win over Georgia in the Discovery Orange Bowl. But Brynn Harvey and the 8th ranked Knights made sure that lightning didn't strike twice, avenging a 52-28 loss to Notre Dame earlier in the season on their way to winning the Big East in their first year with the conference. In their regular season win over UCF, the Irish capitalized off four turnovers to rout their conference foes. But in the rematch, it was the Knights who made the biggest defensive splash, recording three interceptions and a recovered fumble, while the offense outscored Notre Dame 28-7 in the second half to pull away. The defense played a huge role in the win, but the turnovers would've been for naught had the offense not been able to capitalize. Thanks to senior runningback Brynn Harvey, who leads the nation's 2nd ranked rushing offense, they did just that. Harvey was the Big East's leading rusher this season, racking up over 1,600 yards and 16 touchdowns, and finishing with an average of 5.9 yards per carry. This was in addition to backup runningback Storm Johnson and QB Jeff Godfrey, who accounted for an additional 1,600 yards and 23 touchdowns on the ground. Against the Irish, Harvey impressed with 121 yards and two scores off 26 carries, and three catches for 44 yards and another touchdown through the air. Since their loss to Notre Dame in the regular season, the Knights have won nine of their last ten games, and are now Orange Bowl bound against the eventual ACC champion.

A hard fought 17-12 loss to Clemson derailed Maryland's shot at an undefeated conference record, but behind the big arm of junior quarterback Danny O'Brien (the conference's leading passer), the Terps made up for it in the ACC title game. O'Brien and the nation's 4th ranked passing offense fared much better against Clemson's top ten defense the second time around, completing 60% of his 35 passes for 342 yards and four touchdowns, and also rushing for 39 yards and another score in the win to lead his team to their first ACC title since 2001. O'Brien showed dramatic improvement in his second season as starter, leading the ACC with a 148.3 QB rating, and completing 60% of his passes for 3,359 yards (3rd in the NCAA) and 25 touchdowns with just 11 interceptions. This was in stark contrast to his sophomore season, where O'Brien completed less than 50% of his passes for just 2,300 yards, 17 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. Since dropping back-to-back games at home against former conference foe Georgia Tech and #18 Clemson, the Terps are on a seven-game winning streak. Now their high-flying aerial attack will face off against rushing juggernaut UCF in what is sure to be an entertaining Orange Bowl.

On September 22nd, the Rebels fell just three points shy of disrupting Florida State's undefeated season. Their defense recorded an incredible six interceptions against E.J. Manuel, but their abysmal offense simply couldn't capitalize as the team trailed 20-3 headed into the final quarter. Ole Miss scored twice in the final fifteen minutes to pull within a field goal, but lost in the end. The second time around, their offense was just as helpless, but their +14 turnover differential did not come into play as the defense didn't record a single turnover, allowing the 2nd ranked Seminoles punched their ticket to the BCS national championship game with a dominating 40-10 win over the #12 Rebels in the SEC title game. Manuel had a much better game against the Rebels this time around, racking up 154 yards through the air, a team-leading 107 yards on the ground, and three touchdowns in the victory. Manuel finished the season with 792 yards and five touchdowns on the ground, second only to Army's Trent Steelman amongst quarterbacks. Meanwhile, Ole Miss' junior signal-caller Barry Brunetti completed just 11 of 31 passes for 98 yards, one touchdown, and one interception, and was sacked five times against the nation's 3rd ranked passing defense. The Seminoles are now just one win away from capping off their second unbeaten season in school history and earning their first national title since 2000, and will be watching the Big Ten title game closely to see if #1 Wisconsin survives to face off against them on the big stage.

Senior Jordan Wynn led all college football quarterbacks this season, posting a QB rating of 188.5, and completing 69% of his passes for 3,434 yards and 35 touchdowns with just five interceptions. But not even that could prepare fans for what they witnessed in the inaugural PAC-16 title game. In what will go down as one of the greatest performances in NCAA history, Wynn completed all but one of his 23 attempted passes for 483 yards and an incredible six touchdowns to beat #6 Oregon 52-40 in an offensive duel, and avenge the team's only loss of the season when they were bested by the Ducks 31-26 in September. The 5th ranked Utes led the nation in points per game (37.7) and total offense this season (5,559), and put those strengths on display in the conference championship game by racking up 600 yards of offense and seven touchdowns in the victory, making Oregon the 8th team that Utah beat by double digits this season. Wynn's go-to man was senior Devonte Christopher, who had five catches for 126 yards and two touchdowns, and finished the season with a team-leading 1,037 yards and 11 TDs. The Ducks managed a respectable 340 yards of total offense, but their 10th ranked defense gave up their most yardage this season in what was the team's second loss of the year. As for the Utes, they'll have an outside shot at making the national title game should Wisconsin fall to Ohio State, but will likely appear in the Rose Bowl game for the first time in school history against an at-large opponent.

Led by Heisman front-runner Montee Ball, there's no question that Wisconsin's 3rd ranked rushing offense has been a big part of their success this season. But the Badgers also excel on defense, where they rank 9th overall and have a +14 turnover differential, and their passing game is worthy of note as well. Against arch-rival Ohio State in the only game that wasn't a rematch from the regular season on conference championship weekend, they used a balanced offensive attack, while the defense allowed just one touchdown in a 23-13 victory to win the inaugural Big Ten championship game, and secure a berth in their first ever BCS title game. Montee Ball didn't score a touchdown in the win, but he still led the charge on offensive with 31 carries for 182 yards, averaging 5.8 yards per touch. Considered to be the odds-on favorite to win the Heisman, Ball led the NCAA with 409 carries for 2,517 yards, finishing just 112 yards shy of breaking Barry Sander's single-season rushing record. He also had 16 touchdowns this season, averaging 6.1 yards per carry and nearly 200 yards per game. Junior quarterback Jon Budmayr wasn't nearly as impressive, but he did complete 12 of 26 passes for 269 yards and both of Wisconsin's touchdowns. Leading the receiving corps was junior Jared Abbrederis (pictured above), who had five catches for 162 yards and two scores. After suffering their fourth loss of the season, the Buckeyes will now look to secure back-to-back wins in the Capital One Bowl. As for the Badgers, they have a date with #2 Florida State in the big game, where only one can finish their dream season as the best team in the country.

#11 Kansas State and Boise State emerged from the new-look Big XII as division champions this year, each looking to be the first team to kick off a new era of football in the conference with a Big XII title. The Broncos began their season 5-0, which included a 30-27 win over Kansas State, but won just three of their last seven games to limp into the title game after winning a tie-breaker over BYU (6-6, 5-4). There, they faced off against a determined Kansas State squad who relied on their 5th ranked defense and speedy junior runningback John Hubert to walk away with a 26-14 victory and their first Big XII championship since 2003. The Broncos had no answer for Hubert, who carried the ball 38 times for 193 yards and two touchdowns, averaging five yards per carry. Now the Wildcats will begin preparation for their third appearance in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, where they'll face off against an at-large opponent.

Here's a taste of the upcoming BCS bowl action:

Two of the nation's most prolific passing attacks will face off in the Rose Bowl when #3 Utah (12-1, 9-1) (PAC-16 Champion) meets #5 Arkansas (10-2, 7-2) (At-Large Bid).

Iowa's third-ranked pass defense will attempt to contain Garrett Gilbert and the nation's 5th ranked passing attack as #4 Texas (11-1, 8-1) (At-Large Bid) faces off against #6 Iowa (9-3, 6-3) in the Sugar Bowl.

ACC champion #12 Maryland (11-2, 9-1) and their top-notch aerial attack will meet Big East champion #7 UCF (11-2, 8-2) and the nation's #1 rushing offense in the Orange Bowl.

It's a match-up of top 20 offenses and defenses in the Fiesta Bowl, where #9 Kansas State (11-2, 8-2) (Big XII Champion) will take on #13 USF (9-3, 7-2).

The last two undefeated teams in the nation bring their explosive offenses to the field as #2 Florida State (13-0, 10-0) (SEC Champion) takes on #1 Wisconsin (13-0, 10-0) (Big Ten Champion) in the BCS National Championship game.

The best non-BCS bowl action:

Maaco Bowl Las Vegas - #11 Stanord (8-4, 5-4) vs. #20 Army (11-1, 5-1) (GAC Champion)

Chik-Fil-A Bowl - #14 Auburn (8-4, 5-4) vs. #22 Clemson (10-3, 8-2)

Outback Bowl - #18 Ole Miss (10-3, 7-3) vs. #16 Michigan (8-4, 6-3)

Capital One Bowl - #10 South Carolina (10-2, 8-1) vs. #17 Ohio St. (9-4, 7-3)

Godaddy.com Bowl - Western Michigan (9-3, 7-0) (MAC Champion) vs. Arkansas St. (8-4, 5-2)

Jordan Wynn and Tony Gregory are always beasts in my dynasties as well. In my Baylor dynasty, Gregory one it the first year with Wynn as the runner up and Wynn is on pace to win it this year. I agree with not liking how the Heisman works in this game though. My halfback Jarred Salubi is leading the nation in rushing by over 200 yards and only trails the nation's leaders in touchdowns by 3, while having better receiving stats than almost every other halfback. And Robert Griffin isn't getting any award consideration either, despite having 3500 total yards and 35 total touchdowns. He is even listed as a semifinalist for any of the QB post season awards.

Yeah it's so stupid. Out of the five Heisman finalists in the game, only two of them made the cut on my hand-picked list. Ladarius Perkins led the nation with 20 rushing TDs, but that's the only impressive thing about him. He finished 800 yards shy of Ball in rushing yards. And Tony Gregory and DeAnthony Thomas...they had great seasons sure, but they're a fucking joke when compared to Ball and Boykin. I honestly can't figure out how this game is determing the Heisman contenders.

GUTTER BALL: NO BOWL FOR OUTLAWS
DESPITE A 7-5 (5-2) RECORD, WEST TEXAS WAS SHUT OUT OF THE POSTSEASON

In their second year with the FBS, the West Texas Outlaws defied all expectations, finishing their season on a four-game winning streak to improve upon their .500 record from a year ago by finishing 7-5 (5-2), with a solid 3rd place finish in the Sun Belt conference behind Troy and Arkansas State. But not even that was enough to put WTU in the postseason, as they were kept out of the bowl picture for the second straight year despite being eligible.

The Sun Belt Conference has two guaranteed bowl tie-ins each season, with a contingency to fill up to three additional bowl slots. The R&L Carriers New Orleans bowl gets the first choice of participant, not necessarily the Conference Champion so long as the champion is accomodated with another bowl. However, they must host the conference champion two out of every four years. The second participant is the 4th place finisher in the Conference USA, or an at-large bid if that team does not qualify. The Godaddy.com Bowl hosts the second selection from the Sun Belt, where they are pitted against the MAC Champion. Additionally, the conference is listed as an alternate in the Advocare 100 Independence Bowl, the Beef O'Bradys Bowl, and the BBVA Compass Bowl, requiring those bowls to choose a Sun Belt team should either of their participants not qualify. Unfortunately, none of those scenarios played out for the Outlaws, and they were not selected to any other bowl as an at-large bid.

"It's unfortunate that it played out this way, that's all I can say really," said head coach Major Applewhite after the decision. "To look back and see 28 teams participating in bowls that finished with either the same win total or worse than ours, it hurts. But we don't get to make the rules, we just have to play by them. So our goal is going to be a top two finish in the conference so we can get a guaranteed postseason bid next season."

This season, there are a total of 68 bowl participants. Eleven teams finished with six wins, and seventeen teams finished with seven wins.

2012 AWARDS CEREMONY

Heisman_Pic.png

Barry Sanders' mark of 2,628 rushing yards in a single season set in 1988 remains safe 24 years later...but just barely. As the leader of the nation's 2nd ranked rushing offense and 4th ranked total offense, Wisconsin's senior runningback Montee Ball fell just 112 yards short of breaking Sanders' mark nearly three decades ago, and was awarded the Heisman trophy in a landslide vote.

It was clear to fans, experts, and the voters that Montee Ball was the best athlete to take the field in 2012. An injury to James White early in the season left Ball as the lone workhorse in Wisconsin's backfield, and he did not disappoint, carrying the ball 409 times for 2,517 yards and 16 touchdowns, averaging 6.1 yards per carry. Ball was simply incredible all season long, and now has Wisconsin on the precipice of finishing the season undefeated and winning a BCS national championship, both of which would mark the first time it has happened in school history. The unstoppable Ball rushed for 100+ yards in twelve of the team's thirteen games, 200+ yards in six of those games, and was named player of the game an astounding nine times. Some of his more unbelievable performances included 234 yards and three TDs in a 38-31 overtime win against Penn State, 252 yards and three scores in a 31-3 win over Northwestern, 250 yards and four touchdowns in a 45-12 win on the road against Minnesota, 243 yards and a touchdown in a 24-10 win over Illinois, and an incredible 305 yards and one touchdown in a 27-12 win vs. UL Monroe. His amazing stats earned him 71% of the votes cast for the Heisman, finishing miles ahead of Troy's Corey Robinson (QB) and Florida's Earl Okine (DE). Despite his epic performance in the PAC-16 championship game, Utah's Jordan Wynn (QB) received just one vote, while Ohio's Ryan Boykin (HB) received none to round out the list of Heisman contenders. Alongside backs Alan Ameche (1954) and Ron Dayne (1999), Montee Ball is the third player to win the Heisman for Wisconsin. He also cleaned up in the annual awards ceremony, taking home the Maxwell, Walter Camp, and Walker awards.

In other news, junior Jabari Price (CB) out of North Carolina won the Bednarik and Thorpe after recording 55 tackles, one sack, eight interceptions, one forced fumble, two fumble recoveries, and a touchdown in 2012. Corey Robinson (QB) finished 2nd in the Heisman voting, but did win the O'Brien as the nation's top quarterback. The Biletnikoff recepient was Robinson's go-to man, junior Eric Thomas, who finished with 68 receptions for 1,176 yards and 16 touchdowns. And Florida State's senior kicker Dustin Hopkins won the Groza by hitting 24 of his 25 attempted field goals, and not missing a single extra point.

As for the Outlaws, junior Tom Terry (MLB) earned first team honors in the Sun Belt after leading the team with 64 tackles, 3.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles. He was joined by the injured Jared Ingram (CB) as a return specialist, who racked up over 1,000 yards in kick and punt returns this season. Max Drew rushed for 947 yards and seven TDs to earn him a spot as a 2nd team All-American, and Scott Nolan (CB) had 30 tackles and a team-leading four interceptions.

In each team's first Rose Bowl appearance in school history, Arkansas and Utah combined for 76 points and nearly 1,000 yards of total offense. But in the end, it was defense (or a lack thereof) that determined the outcome. While Arkansas' 21st ranked defense held Jordan Wynn to under 300 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions, Tyler Wilson completed 65% of his passes for 350 yards and five scores against the nation's 107th ranked secondary, leading the Razorbacks to a 45-31 victory over PAC-16 champion Utah. The 11-2 (7-2) record and BCS bowl trophy mark a remarkable comeback for the team, who finished 5-7 (3-6) last season. It also served to strengthen senior quarterback Tyler Wilson's draft stock, who led the SEC by throwing for over 3,000 yards and 32 touchdowns with just 12 interceptions this year, but was overshadowed by quarterbacks like Wynn and Troy's Corey Robinson. As for Jordan Wynn and the 3rd ranked Utes, it was a lackluster end to a season that saw the team finish with just one loss, and earn a conference championship amidst some talented competition in the PAC-16. The final score doesn't accurately reflect the game, as Arkansas led Utah 45-17 midway through the fourth quarter until Wynn threw a pair of touchdowns in the final seven minutes to lessen the gap. Truth be told, the Razorbacks put together a dominant performance against one of the best quarterbacks in the game, and had no shortage of offense in racking up six touchdowns on the day.

A 31-24 loss to conference foe #3 Utah in mid October dealt a crushing blow to Texas' undefeated dreams, as well as their conference and national championship berth hopes in their first year with the PAC-16. But an 11-1 (8-1) record was still good enough to land them an at-large berth in the Allstate Sugar Bowl for the fourth time in school history. It was there that they met #6 Iowa, a 9-3 (6-3) team who fell short against ranked conference foes #1 Wisconsin, #16 Michigan, and #17 Ohio State during the regular season. The Hawkeyes 3rd ranked pass defense helped mask their mediocre 73rd ranked offense, while Texas predictably excelled on both sides of the ball, ranking 5th through the air, and #1 overall when it came to stopping the run. But even against a stingy front seven, Iowa managed 116 yards and three touchdowns on the ground, scoring a total of 31 points, enough to tie the highest amount that Texas had allowed all season. However, it was the Longhorns quick start that ultimately won them the game, as they quickly secured a 24-0 lead midway through the second quarter, and never looked back in their 40-31 victory. Player of the game honors went to senior quarterback Garrett Gilbert, who capped off a tumultuous career by throwing for 3,300 yards and 29 touchdowns in 2012, and winning a bowl game for the first time in his tenure with the team. Against the Hawkeyes, Gilbert completed 18 of 37 passes for 250 yards, one touchdown, and one interception, and also rushed for 41 yards and another score. A good amount of the credit must also go to the runningback duo of sophomore Malcolm Brown and senior Jeremy Hills, who combined for 128 yards and two touchdowns off 26 carries. Meanwhile, the defense allowed 350 yards and a season-high 31 points, but also forced two turnovers and limited Iowa to just one successful conversion on twelve 3rd down attempts. Junior runningback Marcus Coker, who rushed for over 1,000 yards and nine TDs during the regular season, led the Hawkeyes' offensive effort with 63 yards and a touchdown off 11 carries, but the team was forced to abandon the run early after falling behind by four scores. Senior QB James Vanderberg wasn't up to the task of leading his team to victory, completing just 42% of his passes for 234 yards, one touchdown, and one interception.

Big East champion UCF and ACC champion Maryland arrived in Miami with strengths on both sides of the ball, but in different areas. For the Knights, Brynn Harvey led the nation's top-ranked rushing offense, while the defense's front seven put the clamps on opposing runningbacks to give UCF the 7th ranked rushing defense. As for the Terrapins, they relied on junior quarterback Davey O'Brien and the nation's 3rd ranked aerial attack, while their secondary ranked 16th against the pass. With their offensive and defensive strengths falling in different areas, the Orange Bowl promised to be an interesting contest...and it did not disappoint. In their first BCS bowl appearance in school history, the 7th ranked Knights used a balanced offensive attack to put up over 400 total yards, while their defense allowed just one successful 3rd down conversion in a hard fought 30-27 victory. Junior runningback Brynn Harvey rushed for 138 yards and two touchdowns off 29 carries, and junior quarterback Jeff Godfrey completed 55% of his passes for 182 yards, one touchdown, and another rushing touchdown in the closing minutes to give his team a permanent lead. Meanwhile, junior QB Danny O'Brien was held to 171 yards and a touchdown through the air after averaging 252 yards and two TDs over the course of the season, but also rushed for 85 yards and a score. Still, the Terrapins converted just one of their six 3rd down attempts, and only reached the redzone twice, while UCF added 24 points in five redzone trips. It was just the edge that the Knights needed to give Maryland an 0-4 record in their Orange Bowl history.

#9 Kansas State was one of just three schools to remain with the Big XII in their massive shake-up during the offseason, and had no issues handling the mediocre conference competition, finishing the regular season with a 9-3 (7-2) record before they beat Boise State by two scores in the conference title game. In the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, they came up against at-large #13 USF, who fell 36-30 to in-state foe #7 UCF in their regular season finale to miss out on their chance to appear in the Big East title game. Both teams finished in the top 20 with their ground games over the course of the season, but it was South Florida's 5th ranked defense that made the difference as they held the Wildcats to a season-low ten points in their first ever BCS bowl appearance in school history. While the Bulls did allowed 327 total offensive yards, they shut down Kansas State when it mattered the most, recording two turnovers, and not allowing a single point in two redzone trips. Tied at ten headed into the final quarter is when USF really showed up, shutting down the Wildcats while their own offense scored 13 unanswered points to put the game away. Filling in for injured starter Bryce Brown and injured backup John Hubert, third-string junior runningback Robert Rose rushed for 134 yards off 35 carries to lead Kansas State's offense, but that wasn't enough to overcome the team's miscues and ineptitude in the redzone as the team lost their bowl game for the 4th time in a row.
