WEEK THREE
WEST TEXAS OUTLAWS (0-1, 0-0)
VS.
APPALACHIAN ST. MOUNTAINEERS (0-1, 0-0)
Two of the newest teams in the Football Bowl Subdivision squared off on Saturday, and after a back-and-forth game that saw the Mountaineers keep pace with their west Texas foes, it was the Outlaws' outstanding running game that prevailed. Led by senior runningback DeShaun Sands, WTU racked up over 200 yards and three touchdowns on the ground, and pulled away in the fourth quarter to take home their first victory of the season, 30-16.
From the first score to the final second, the Outlaws never trailed in this contest...but it was still a close call, as Appalachian State managed to stay within striking distance for most of the game. In his return from a mild concussion that sidelined him last week, Charles Dickson had a decent outing in his first full game of 2013, completing half of his 22 passes for 153 yards. But it was the play of senior runningback DeShaun Sands that won the game, as he rushed for 186 yards and a touchdowns off 33 carries, and also had a 38-yard catch. Backup runningback Tyree Melton also saw limited action, rushing for 25 yards and a score off four carries. A good portion of the credit for the win must also go to senior kicker Caleb Reynolds, who hit all three of his attempted field goals, including a 41-yarder to open up the scoring in the first quarter. Defensively, the Outlaws had a much-improved performance over last week, holding the Mountaineers to four successful conversions on fourteen 3rd and 4th down attempts. They also limited their opponents to just one touchdown in four redzone trips, forcing them to settle for field goals on the other three scoring drives. They also recorded two sacks, and forced a game-changing three turnovers.
On the other side of the ball, senior quarterback James Harstead completed 17 of 31 passes for 209 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. Harstead also rushed for 57 yards off 14 carries. His go-to man was junior tight end Curtis Rushing, who led the team with six catches for 88 yards and the team's only score of the day. But the team failed in their mission to utilize a balanced offensive attack, as junior runningback Giovanni Bernard was limited to 53 yards off 11 carries. Appalachian State's defense was led by true sophomore Chris Green (MLB), who recorded nine tackles and 1.5 sacks, but as a whole the team continued to struggle with containing opposing offenses as they allowed 373 total offensive yards and three touchdowns.
Three weeks into the new season, the Mountaineers are still winless, but hope to correct that in the upcoming weeks. In fourteen days, they'll play host to Ole Miss (0-2), who was shocked by lowly UL Monroe 24-21 last week, before they hit the road to face off against Central Michigan (0-1), a team more closely in line with their skill level. Meanwhile, the Outlaws will also enjoy a bye week as they prepare for their first home game of the year on September 21st when they'll play host to semi-rival New Mexico State (1-1) for the first time in school history.
