WEST TEXAS OUTLAWS (3-2, 0-0)
VS.
TROY TROJANS (3-3, 0-2)

Week_8.png

Troy entered Saturday's contest with a +13 turnover differential, the best in the nation...but against the Outlaws, the tables were turned. While the Trojans' ball-hawking defense forced just one turnover, West Texas recorded three interceptions, recovered a fumble, and scored a defensive touchdown which allowed their offense to build a 28-0 lead in the first half and cruise to victory in their Sun Belt conference opener.

Midway through his second full season as starter, junior quarterback Charles Dickson seems to finally be hitting his stride. Against the Trojans, Dickson completed 13 of 18 passes for 158 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. A healthy chunk of those yards went to senior C.J. Bellamy, who had six catches for 103 yards and a score. As for the ground game, DeShaun Sands rushed for 104 yards and two touchdowns off 22 carries for an average of 4.7 yards per touch. Backup runningback Andrew Brown also saw his fair amount of playing time, rushing for 68 yards off 20 carries. Defensively is where the Outlaws truly shined as they limited Troy to a 36% conversion rate on 3rd downs, and allowed just two touchdowns despite the Trojans racking up 387 total offensive yards. Senior Alfred Billings (SS) led the charge with five tackles, one sack, and an interception, while second-year freshman cornerback Thomas Bray (pictured above) recorded his team-leading third pick of the season, and returned it 71 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter.

On the other side of the ball, true sophomore quarterback Ryan Hackett continued to struggle in his relief role for injured starter Corey Robinson, completing 43% of his 30 passes for 257 yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions. His biggest target was senior tight end Jim Teknipp, who had five catches for 159 yards and a score. Groundwise, backup runningback Justin Albert and Hackett combined for 127 yards off 25 carries for an average of five yards per touch, but four offensive turnovers doomed the Trojans from being competitive in this contest. Troy's defense recorded three sacks and an interception, but also allowed 353 total offensive yards, and 21 points in four redzone trips.

Troy has now suffered four straight losses since losing their star quarterback, including three inside the conference. But the team hopes to turn their fortunes around next week when they play host to Texas State (1-4, 0-0). Meanwhile, the Outlaws will get a week of rest before facing off against in-state foe North Texas (3-3, 1-0) in week ten.

Making a minor change to my matchup previews. Instead of showing total offensive/defensive yards, I'll show the average yards per game, as I feel it tells a better story of how each team is performing.

Just noticed this. Since I go there, you shouldn't have changed the UTPB name

:smh:

Other than that keep up the good work!

UTPB is too damn long man...and the Wranglers is a weak name.

On a side note, I've never understood why Midland/Odessa doesn't have some sort of a college football program. I mean really, nothing?

It's like UTEP.

And the Wranglers???!!!!!????

That's Odessa College man. Its the Falcons. And the campus size is increasing here and they've added a tennis program and there's talks of golf. But they should have a football team. They could easily play at Ratliff like you have them.

WEEK TEN

North_Texas.gif
WTU.png

NORTH TEXAS MEAN GREEN (3-4, 1-1)
VS.
WEST TEXAS OUTLAWS (4-2, 1-0)

Week_10.png

Last week, the Outlaws forced four turnovers against Troy, helping to sway momentum in their team's favor for a 35-14 victory. Perhaps no one was more instrumental in this than second-year freshman Thomas Bray, the team's leader at cornerback, who had a 71-yard interception return for a touchdown in the first quarter. Against the Mean Green, Bray managed to trump his performance from a week ago. In a low-scoring defensive game where every opportunity meant the difference between a win or a loss, Bray recorded eight tackles, two interceptions, and returned one of them 94 yards for a touchdown midway through the fourth quarter to put the Outlaws up 21-7, and seal the team's third straight victory.

Charles Dickson had a below average performance on Saturday, completing half of his 18 attempted passes for 113 yards and one interception. Naturally, it was DeShaun Sands who led the offensive charge, rushing for 115 yards and a touchdown off 23 carries for an average of five yards per touch, while backup runningback Andrew Brown also reached the endzone. But the biggest story of the day was the defense, who did allow 327 yards of total offense, but limited the Mean Green to fourteen points in four redzone trips, and forced three turnovers in the win. Leading the charge was the aforementioned Thomas Bray (CB), who truly saved the game when he intercepted his second pass of the day on the team's own 6-yard line, and returned it 94 yards for a touchdown to not only kill a North Texas scoring drive, but add another seven points to the scoreboard for the Outlaws. Bray's performance on Saturday set a new school record for most interceptions in a season with five, and he is also the first player in school history to score two defensive touchdowns in a single season. Bray was a member of the Outlaws' first recruiting class in the spring of 2012 as a three-star prospect out of Deer Park, Texas. He redshirted in his first year only to be handed the starting job in 2013 as the only cornerback on the roster with any amount of collegiate experience.

On the other side of the ball, senior quarterback Derek Thompson continued to struggle with his decision-making, completing 10 of 18 passes for just 77 yards and two interceptions. In the absence of a solid passing game, senior runningback Brandin Byrd carried the team with 189 yards and two touchdowns off 37 carries, but simply could not overcome the Mean Green's three offensive turnovers. North Texas' defense did all they could, recording two sacks, one interception, and limiting the Outlaws to 14 offensive points, but it simply wasn't enough in the end.

After suffering back-to-back conference losses that have all but knocked them out of the running for the Sun Belt title, the Mean Green will face off against lowly Texas State (1-6, 0-2) next week to wrap up their four-week road stretch before returning home to end their season against Troy, Mid Tenn State, and Arkansas State. Meanwhile, the Outlaws have their sights set on the first conference championship in school history, and hope to continue their run next week when they host feisty Arkansas State (3-4, 2-1).

WEEK ELEVEN

ARKANSAS ST. RED WOLVES (3-4, 2-1)
VS.
WEST TEXAS OUTLAWS (5-2, 2-0)

Week_11.png

In the game of football, turnovers can make or break a team...nobody knows this better than the Outlaws, who's defense has excelled at making game-changing plays over the past few weeks. Saturday was no different, as they recorded three interceptions in the first half to help WTU build a seemingly insurmountable 20-0 lead. But Phillip Butterfield would find his confidence in the final twelve minutes, leading his team on a furious rally that fell just three points short when they failed to recover an onside kick, giving the Outlaws a 27-24 victory.

West Texas' offense was nothing spectacular, managing just 291 total offensive yards, but they did enough to extend the team's win streak to four games. Charles Dickson completed 10 of 23 passes for 160 yards and two touchdowns. His go-to man was tight end Chad Clark, who had three catches for 52 yards and a score. On the ground, DeShaun Sands and Andrew Brown split carries this time around, combining for 117 yards and a Sands touchdown off 28 carries. Sands also had a 6-yard TD reception. Coaches have assured the press and fans that rumors of an injury to their star runningback are just that, and the split carries was simply part of the gameplan. Defensively is where the team truly shined, recording three sacks and three interceptions despite allowing 444 total offensive yards. Even though the defense gave up 21 points in the final twelve minutes, they must be commended for keeping the Red Wolves without a touchdown through the first three quarters.

As for Arkansas State, senior quarterback Phillip Butterfield did just as much to help his team as he did to hurt it, completing 25 of 48 passes for 273 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions. His biggest target was true sophomore Joe Quinn, who shredded the secondary for 140 yards and two scores on 12 catches. As for the ground game, SirGregory Thornton carried the ball just 11 times for an impressive 73 yards, but the team was forced to abandon their running game after falling behind early. Arkansas State's defense limited the Outlaws to fewer than 300 total offensive yards, but couldn't force any turnovers to shift momentum to their team's favor.

Losers in five of their last seven games, the Red Wolves will look to repair their lackluster season by finishing strong and becoming bowl eligible, and it starts next week when they host Texas State (2-6, 1-2). As for the Outlaws, they'll hit the road next week for a crucial contest against Mid Tenn State (5-3, 2-1), where only one team will emerge with a good enough conference record to challenge UL Monroe for the Sun Belt title.
