A lot of gamers are caught up in what has been dubbed 'Resolution-Gate'. The PS4 is a monster machine for $399, and the Xbox One is toast. Yadda yadda. But are gamers getting too caught up in numbers? After playing Thief I'd argue the answer is a resounding 'YES'.


Playing through Thief on PS4 and Xbox One over the past week I'm not so sure 1080p on consoles is a standard that should be set for next-gen. The PS4 version struggles needlessly to try to maintain a 30 frames per second presentation, regularly dipping into the 15-20 range during gameplay. At several points in the journey, it even edges toward the single digits. That isn't even something I remember dealing with on the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360.


What makes this particularly controversial is the Xbox One version does a much better job of maintaining a steady framerate. I'd go as far as to say because of this, the Xbox One version is better.


So how is it that Thief on Xbox One is able to do this? Well, the short answer is 900p. It's displayed at a lower resolution, requiring roughly 660,000 fewer pixels per image to be rendered. However, the visual clarity would make you think the six-digit figure is in no way accurate. The truth is that's due to diminishing returns. Between 900p and 1080p the images don't look nearly as different as going from the standard definition output of 480i up to 720p. Surprisingly, the pixel difference is the same.


Numbers are a big thing right now, and I understand that it's an important factor for most gamers. After all, paying $100 more for a console that has less processing power is a tough sell.


As much as the Xbox One has been beaten up and called names all over the internet, it's more powerful than gamers are giving it credit for. More importantly, developers feel less pressure to adhere to the 1080p standard which compromises texture quality, effects, physics, and in the case of Thief, framerate.


I'm not saying settling for less is a good thing, but if a developer decides to make a PS4 game 900p (as was the case with Battlefield 4), they shouldn't be attacked for it. In the same vein, if a developer chooses to release a title that runs at 900p on on Xbox One, and it performs well, it shouldn't be a big issue. As we saw with Ryse: Son of Rome, which many including myself argue is the best-looking next-gen title right now, 900p can make your jaw drop provided the game is optimized and has great art direction.

Am I missing something? The article mentions how bad the framerate is on PS4 but I don't see a single mention of what the framerate is on XBone. But hey, it kind of supports your opinion that the XBone is perfectly fine so let's just go with it.

Reviews aren't being too kind to Thief today. Sitting at a 69 on Metacritic. I guess if you're looking for a positive, out of 20 reviews there's only one that's "negative."

vanord gave it a 6 and ign score wasnt good either. alot of bugs, bad story, bad ending, clunky controls. the main thing i took away was that getting past bad guys wasnt about being a success in stealth, it was more about bad AI and bugs allowing you to get past them

I picked up the Redbox 360 version of this with a promotion last night. Honestly, after about 2 hours, I am enjoying it quite a bit. It doesn't have quite the level of freedom of Thief 2, and the resolution and framerate on the 360 could be loads better, but it's been fun. The story is headed down a pretty common path for the series so far, which a lot of reviewers have despised through what I consider to me a misrembrance of the story of the old games.

I will say this, after about 3 chapters, the game is really not difficult at all if you're remotely good at stealth games. I would recommend Master level right off of the bat, or maybe even doing the custom and really amping the challenge for yourself, depending on your confidence level.

Got the PS4 version from Amazon yesterday, but with class and work I didn't have any time to check it out. I made sure to install it, download the update, and the pre-order DLC. Excited to check it out after work today since I don't have class. Been a longtime fan of this series since the first one.

Every legitimate article/review I've read says that the framerate is LOCKED at 30fps on both consoles. The only difference is the resolution. Color me surprised that the ONE article you found says otherwise.

I read the article and they briefly mention that BOTH the PS4 and XBone versions do that. So what was your point again?

Ok, but you initially responded with an article/blog that said that even though the PS4 version had a higher resolution it had frame rate issues,w hich the XBone version did not. But apparently they both have issues with framerate.

So not only was that article bullshit but we're still left with the only difference in the versions being that the PS4 version has a higher resolution. Unless I'm missing something?

The article stated the ps4 is worse with the frame drops, not sure how that makes it bullshit.

Bottom line is, it's up to the devs and whether or not they can fully optimize the games for all systems, and so far, only a few can.
