It's not even like Rashad tried to do any damage, Thiago just kept getting to his feet.

The only time someone came close to finishing was with Silva's punch in the third round. Should he win the fight because of that one minute? He did absolutely nothing but stand up from something like 6-7 takedowns prior.

well yeah thats daley ... but the only time anyone was in danger was rashad in the last round and if silva wasnt gassed suga was going to sleep. not to take credit away from rashad for using his superior wrestling skills to win the fight but it just doesnt look good when your barely inflicting any damage.

The point is I can't say I've ever seen a fighter land a shot like Silva did and not close in to finish the fight. About every fighter in that situation would immediately close the distance and GnP their way to a win...and in the UFC, all it takes is slapping your opponent while they do nothing but cover their face. Rashad was clearly beaten and Silva did nothing but stand tired and be a smart-ass while doing it.

Even if Rashad didn't take Silva down a ton of times during that fight, he still should of won by default...because Silva apparently didn't want to bad enough. Rashad trying to re-incorporate his wrestling may not be the popular style-move amongst fans but its a necessary one. Rashad can only go so far just into his career by staying on his feet and trying to jab and hook his way to wins. You fight a guy who's as strategic and good with the counter as Machida...and your better off taking him to the ground. Leave a guy like Machida or even Shogun standing and they will leg kick the shit out of you. This is MMA, most guys can stand and swing but the great fighters can takedown and scrap. If Rashad wants to become a great fighter, he has to make this happen. Yes, he looked sloppy on the ground but its not like he's been taking fights to the ground his whole career.

You don't like the ground fighting, then go watch boxing.
 
Ground fighting is awesome, but I'm not sure that Rashad tried anything on the ground. There was that one time in the 2nd round (I think) where Silva went for an arm, but neither guy did much on the ground throughout the fight.

I noticed that everytime he put down Silva, he was hesitant but at the same time, Silva didn't stay down very easily. Rashad won that fight because of takedowns alone and that's just the way it goes in the US. International promotions, takedowns don't count as much and they really shouldn't. Some fighters, if they know they can't keep the fight standing, they will let the other guy take them down. Other fighters are just comfortable ground fighting from guard.

Rashad has never really developed an offensive ground game. Still lay and pray. His GnP isn't there IMO

This, of course, begs the question represented by the equation in the title: In the absence of any striking (or submission attempts, for that matter) once on the ground, are takedowns really an effective offensive technique?
