-Ben Henderson looked pretty good against a BJJ ace. Muay Thai, he looked great. Not sure how well he will match up with the top guys who are pretty much great wrestlers in their own right, but he's a fun fighter so I hope he does well.
-Jason Brilz isn't a full-time fighter and he's had a long break between fights. Not sure if that had anything to do with the flash KO, but I'm happy for the Janitor.
-Holy shit, Machida's jumping kick KO was fucking awesome. If Randy had to go out with a loss, at least he went with one of the best looking KO's ever. Seagal getting more props from Black House is still hilarious.
-Aldo/Hominick was not nearly as close of a fight, but damn did it have some awesome drama. Aldo definitely lost something after the first round because he slowed down considerably (and even then, he still threw some great combos). Hominick was in tip top shape throughout and it's probably the only thing that kept him in the fight (that and desire no doubt). I had Aldo winning 1-4, but Hominick's ground control in the final round was awesome. I'm not sure exactly how close he was to hurting and knocking out Aldo, but the closing moments was well, awesome.
As for the hematoma, damn! I had scenes of the Rahman (sp?), from the boxing match years ago playing in my head. Luckily, it wasn't that horrible. Doctor checked it out and thought he could continue, so tremendous. Star making performance, to some degree (not saying he's a draw) for him.
If Aldo's explanation for why he tired rather quickly is legit, he should be killer in his next fight (whether it's Mendes or Florian or anyone else).
-The fucking main event.
God damn, both fighters left me wanting to get pissed off as much as Shogun was thrilled Arizona drafted PP7. First, Jake Shields. What was the plan? I don't get it. He has no power. For the first two rounds, he was scared because GSP was nailing him with some powerful shots. At some point, he scratched GSP's eye or landed a real good punch and GSP got scared or mentally weak because he pretty much stopped being aggressive.
I think we can all agree, the ONLY way Shields was winning was submission or if he bloodied GSP enough that the doctor stopped the fight. Melendez told him early in the fight not to pull guard "yet." The fuck?
With that said, it's not even as if Shields could have taken GSP down. The few times he grabbed hold of GSP, the man would either hop his way out of it, or toss him off. GSP was the better wrestler and once that was proven, it turned into a countdown of how long it went until the knockout came.
But it didn't.
GSP could not knock out Jake Shields.
SERIOUSLY.
I know he could not see out of his left eye. I realize, mentally, he checked out by then. His corner kept trying to get him to focus on other things and all he could talk about was not being able to see.
But still, how the fuck can GSP not knock out Jake Shields of all people when the ground game is not a worry at all?
Obviously, he was being overly cautious because he did not want to risk fighting off his back with one eye…in a worst case scenario. Talk about fighting scared…
After the fight, GSP basically cried about needing to get to the hospital because he couldn't see out of the eye. When asked about Silva, he gave the same tired answer he's given for years….ie. no fucking way at 185...maybe at catchweight.
Sucks because besides Nick Diaz, there is literally not a soul on the planet under Zuffa contract or available to them that anybody would pay to see him fight.
They've run out of options for GSP opponents at 170 but they're stuck because he won't go to 180…unless he freaks at the reality that 170 is cleaned out and changes his mind.
Fuck Jake Shields. Sure, he lasted 25 minutes against GSP but how the fuck did he expect to win?
Very good overall show, but damn the main even left a sour taste.
