UFC 129: St. Pierre vs. Shields (4/30 on PPV)

My boy was telling me that there's an article on how well GSP cuts weight, and that he actually weighs 193 on the night of the fight. If this is true then people need to stop making excuses for him. There's no reason why he can't fight at 185.

For GSP to fight at 185, he needs to add probably 15-20 pounds onto his frame. It's not something he can do over the course of 60 days and maintain everything that makes him awesome at 170.

He'd have to mentally be gung ho about it and take 6 months or more to adapt.

Not to mention the fact that if he moves up and loses at 185 (after forfeiting the 170 title mind you), he's fucked.

Which means the realistic option is GSP sticks at welterweight but does the one fight dream match-up to appease the fans and draw $$$.

Empire, spot on with your main event analysis. This card had the potential to be the greatest UFC card I've ever seen and Jean fucking French sucked the energy right out of the building. The guy is God in Canada and even he got a lukewarm reception post-fight. It was laughably bad. There was no way to spin this into some technical clinic, either. St. Pierre was just winging overhand rights repeatedly.

Jake Shields. Aside from the fact that his boring label is officially FOREVER now, what the fuck was he thinking? Since he only had on way to win and he spent so much time training with Sonnen and Askren, I expected him to relentlessly attack with takedowns and clinches and hope St. Pierre gets caught up. Instead he's getting into striking exchanges and attempting flying bro hugs in the middle of the ring.

If the GSP/And1 superfight does go down, Silva finishes him in three.

I felt GSP fell in to the same trap that I've seen in the past with other guys who have an obvious dominance in the standup. I'm thinking back to JDS vs Nelson and Duffee vs Russow. They know there is nothing to worry about, so just keep working the same combo, in this case jab jab overhand. There was no reason to change, because it was working 'well enough'.

And then the eye injury happened (apparently he still can't see), and he was just done. It's disappointing on so many levels.

Exactly why I cant put GSP as no.1 p4p. Who cares about winning rounds when you arent finishing guys or even trying to.

Despite him pissing me off with this fight, he's still 1a and Silva is still 1b.

From a stylistic standpoint, he rendered the #2 welterweight useless. Shields could only get 1 takedown I think in the entire fight and GSP was never in danger.

Silva went through his own period where he fought like a shithead (Leites, Cote, Maia)...but they're still the P4P best together because nobody can touch them.

Before I say anything else, id like to laugh at the fact that GSP pretty much allowed the #2 WW in the world, a reknowned top 10 fighter, to do NOTHING all fight, and yet this somehow negatively impacts his p4p rankings? Finishing fights is awesome, we all love it, but it doesnt take away from winning, im dominant fashion. Dude apparently couldnt see and he still just picked Shields apart. I was as pissed as anyone that he wouldnt move forward more, but it is what it is.. the guy has A LOT of respect for his opponents, for whatever reason. I wish he'd get over it.. but I wont let it take away from how great of a fighter he is.

The guy fights for decisions every fight and is far too conservative since getting flash KOd.

How on planet earth are you going to compare that to someone whos essentially murdered 2 guys in a weight class above him , and toys with those in his. Only one fight was he in danger and he pulled off a spectacular finish.

And 1 is the definition of p4p. GSP is far too conservative . GSP surviving those last two rounds is a knock on Shields who somehow refused to attack and engage a guy who was blind in his lead eye.
Both guys came out nervous and scared , neither guy ever found a comfort zone , and both were conservative to the point of almost making the fight ugly. How many times does a guy have to apologize after a fight.

Guys like Maynard and Fitch are called out for snoozefest styles but GSP gets rewarded ?

Love Silva but his dodging of the LHW division yet eagerness to fight GSP is silly.

I have no interest in And1 fighting anyone below or even in his weight class at this point. If he gets past Okami and refuses any 205ers hes got 0 interesting fights left for me.

It'd be one thing if the decisions were remotely close, but they're not.

He has destroyed each of his opponents on this run. He beat the hell out of Fitch, he fucked up Koscheck's eye (and he's still messed up because of it), he dominated Alves with a torn groin...against Hardy, yeah, he gameplanned strictly to take him down and possibly submit him, no chance of stand-up there. But he still owned him.

It's not like GSP danced around for rounds at a time like Silva did in consecutive fights.
