I don't see how you separate sports in either the UNC or the PSU case. At UNC, they were giving athletes better grades so that they could play and make the university look better than it actually was. At PSU, they were hiding crimes directly related to the athletic department in order to make the university look better that it actually was. Both were stupid, both were basically saying that on field production trumps any civil service, either as educators or as decent human beings. Both should receive similar penalties, imo.

My top concern was always justice for the victim with the Sandusky trial. First and foremost. Also, I wasn't one of the "pitchfork" brigade. The Penn St story is about sports and criminal behavior......I don't know why that is so hard to grasp. It doesn't have to be one or the other.

This story has been swept under the rug by the media and the NCAA. I suspect now that a big name (Roy Williams) and a couple of championships could be involved the media (ESPN) will start to pick the story up and focus on it. Once this happens the punishment will be more severe.

W2B, ask any player JoePa recruited since 1998 if they would even let him into the house if they knew he was covering up a child molestation scandal. The same could be said about any Penn State student (whether they are an athlete or not). Would they have decided to go to Penn State had they known that the university was covering up a child molester. They both have a ton to do with sports, whether it is being able to recruit kids or making sure they stay on the field, both schools put sports first above all other responsibilities.

Again, in my opinion, the UNC accusations are worse, on a sports level. I don't envy the NCAA here. It's a tricky spot on the heels (no pun intended) of the PSU thing.

Most of that was about the culture developed by PSU that put football, the program and the main cast above morality. At least, any physical connection to Paterno that remained (the statue) was still a symbol to that past that the new people in charge at the university did not want a part of.

That...and the statue becoming ground zero to all the folks who are of the mindset of 'PSU against the world!!@!@!@!@!'
