LOL at you trying to "separate" the issues when sports lead to Sandusky's crimes being covered up to begin with.

You trying to make the Sandusky/PSU scandal non sports related is absurd. It's directly sports related seeing as Sandusky used sports to lure the kids, he use athletic buildings and trips to molest kids, he was protected because of his contributions in sports, and the adverse issues that would arise from the story breaking to the sports program, and he was protected by the Athletic director and the most powerful coach in college sports, perhaps of all sports for over 10 years.

But yeah, keep trying to take sports out of it or separate it completely from his crimes/PSU cover up. You can't.

This may also be unpopular, but I also do not believe that Paterno willingly covered up Sandusky and knowingly allowed him to continue raping children. I believe Paterno was fine with the initial investigation that went nowhere, forced Sandusky out, and thought he was washing his hands of it. I think at the end of his life he realize he made a terrible mistake. I am not letting him off the hook, and I believe if alive he should have been investigated and potentially brought up on charges, but that is my view of how it went down.

I do not think Paterno was an evil man, condoning child rape and knowingly enabling Sandusky.

I also do not believe that the cover up benefited the program in the same way the UNC infractions have. I think that is overblown. Had this come out in 1998, Sandusky would have been in prison sooner, and PSU would have resumed business as usual.

You could argue that covering this, in addition to the crimes commited by his players, certainly helped PSU's reputation as the "clean" school in big-time college football, no?

IF what is being reported turns out to be true, especially given that they are a repeat offender (for virtually the same kind of thing), gotta think some kind of death penalty is on the table for UNC.

Again, not letting him off the hook. You could argue that. But to me, it's a bit of a reach. Had this all gone down in 1998, PSU's reputation is largely intact and Sandusky is the only villain.

The player stuff was no secret for many years, and nobody seemed to care. Thats a media/fan issue imo for giving him a pass on that.

The UNC stuff here is egregious abuse and far more heavy handed and black & white in terms of SPORTS, to me, than what went down at PSU concerning SPORTS.

Most of Penn St's punishment had to do with the grotesque nature of the crimes commited. Not that this isn't a huge scandal, but it won't transcend sports like the Penn St scandal did, so there will be less media attention, less fan backlash, less mainstream backlash, less awareness group backlash and with that less of a punishment.

See, I agree with this, and that's my issue here.

The nature of the crimes, which is not the jurisdiction of the NCAA to begin with, affected their decision making.

That is the crux of my sports/social line, not that what Sandusky and the other did had nothing to do with sports.

When it's all said and done, the PSU scandal will be the biggest scandal in not only college athletics but quite possibly higher education in America. If the pimping stories become true, PSU as a public institution may be no more.

I get W2B's point of saying that "Well, this was making sure athletes at the school could play, making it so they were just athletes and not student-athletes, so this has more to do with football." I understand his point, but I don't agree with it.

People are trying to attack W2B by pointing out the child molestation, but in terms of sports, that isn't the part you should be focusing on. Instead, it should be the recruiting and lack of reporting by the Penn State athletic department of crimes within the department, not just by Sandusky but also by many athletes.

If Penn State hadn't covered up Sandusky, they wouldn't have had nearly the recruiting that they had during the last 14 years. This was a decision ingrained in sports, if not, why would they even ask JoePa his opinion on whether or not to report the crimes?

But this goes to an even deeper problem with Penn State and that was the underreporting of crimes within the Athletic Department. JoePa had hold over his team so much that Student Affairs could not touch his players, regardless of any crimes they committed as students. This control was flexed during the Sandusky situation, but this allowed JoePa to have players commit crimes without being suspended a single down from the football team. In this case, they were placing being a good player over being a good citizen.

In both cases, players were seeing the field even though they shouldn't have. However, in the case of Penn State, the image of the university and the football program was allowed to continue its facade for 14 years.

I understand PSU when it is all said and done will be the worst, that being said, my point is PSU and UNC have nothing in common with their stories, why compare. This thread should only be discussing UNC as NOTHING compares to penn state.
