That's one off my points. Obviously they can never guarantee lag free gaming but at least for my money I should be getting dedicated servers if I'm paying for the shit.
And if anyone tries to tell you there isn't just as much lag on the 360 as the PS3 they are full of shit. The only exceptions are certain games and that is the fault of the developers, ie EA and Madden.
LOL. I was thinking the same thing.
I'll just kinda make it easy and not go into classic leaffan troll mode. Mainly because this dedicated server thing is really really bothering me. Massive post on the way btw:
"dedicated servers" has nothing to do with sony, microsoft or even nintendo. Its the game makers that are responsible for if they want their multiplayer games to have some sort of dedicated server running it or running it off people's boxes. Companies such as activision always go with peer to peer gaming (the old someone is the host method) since all that is needed for that is a matchmaking server to basically throw people wherever it see's fit. There's a lot less cost and overhead to run the game. The same can be said for EA and all their sports games. Even the NHL series which has a game mode which can have 12 people playing at the same time runs in peer to peer mode mainly because in theory 12 people playing off someone with a 10mb connection should be no problem. Madden, Fifa ect ect all run peer to peer and the only servers needed there are matchmaking servers.
Now onto the whole "dedicated server" problem when it comes to consoles. I say problem mainly because most non pc gamers simply don't understand how companies can do dedicated servers for pc's and not consoles. MW2's no dedi servers for pc users really drove home (to me anyways) the whole thought that consolers really know nothing about the term dedicated servers and as a whole they have no idea what they mean.
In PC the gaming company simply will not pay for dedicated servers. They don't have to. Why? Because its the gamers themselves paying for the server. Not the developer.
The most common way this works is by companies like these guys:
http://www.gameservers.com/
They will sell you a "20 slot counterstrike source server" for 25 bucks a month or something. Its insanely easy because they already have a base install setup and you don't have to worry about the physical computer itself since its in some massive warehouse somewhere.
Once you purchase the server you basically set it up anyway you want. You can choose to run whatever maps you want, whatever game modes, mods ect ect. You can do whatever you want. There is no cost to the developer because they don't have to do anything except support the "listen servers" which all they do is give you a menu of every game server running that game. Modern Warfare 2 took this away from PC people. Imagine in MW2 you wanted to play a specific game mode or map and didn't want to wait for match making to send you off to god knows where, well with dedicated servers you just sort by whatever and off you go. (assuming there is a server running what you want of course).
There's also the other bonuses of a better connection, ping and overall better gaming expierence by having all of this calculation done on a computer that isn't running a game and having to worry about rendering graphics and all that shit.
Now I can write up a whole other post on why the PSN's network is garbage compared to live and why paying for live is a simple necessity if you want a smooth gaming expierence. I will admit that its not as bad as it was a couple years ago but it still just sucks in comparison. The only real negatives when you compare the two is the whole money vs free and microsoft drm'ing the shit out of everything.
