Quarterback Play Improves in Loss
University Park, PA - Even though the Hoosiers lost to Penn State this weekend, Anthony Thompson is happy because of how much his team has improved.
"If we had played Penn State in week 2, we would have lost by 100 points," coach Thompson told us yesterday. "But our quarterbacks, running backs, receivers, and our defense has improved so much. We were able to hang in with one of the best teams in the country because we are so much better now. I am very pleased with how we played."
The biggest surprise in this game was how well Ben Chappell performed under awful conditions against a great pass defense. Even though he only completed 13 of 31 passes, today was the first time this season that an Indiana quarterback threw more touchdowns than interceptions. 1 touchdown isn't impressive, but 0 interceptions is.
There isn't really much more to write about today. Indiana's defense held its own, Indiana's offense played so-so. Indiana lost. Next week, the Hoosiers face Purdue (5-6) in the Old Oaken Bucket game.

Indiana Lands Top Recruits on Board
Bloomington, IN - Just days before Indiana's monumental game against the Purdue Boilermakers, the top recruits that Indiana had targeted have committed to the Hoosiers.
Tim Alexander, a four star Outside Linebacker from Highland Heights, Ohio, is one of the best run-stopping linebackers in the nation. He can drop back into coverage if needed, but last season he recorded 5-8 tackles a game just off of run plays. "I guess that I have a 6th sense about running plays," he told reporters. "It's almost like I can tell exactly where the running back is going to be." He will probably be taking the place of Will Patterson, who graduates after this season is over.
The other recruit, Donald Keller, is a four star Tackle from Flushing, Michigan. He led the state of Michigan in pancakes and only gave up 2 sacks last year. Both of those sacks were in their game against Highland Heights Highschool, the place that Tim Alexander played football. And guess who got the two sacks that Keller gave up? "That bastard Alexander."
The two are teaming up this year on the Hoosiers roster, and both players may start this season.

Indiana Locks Bowl Game Appearance with Rivalry Win
Bloomington, IN - The Indiana Hoosiers aren't only celebrating their victory over Purdue because they now own the Old Oaken Bucket. They are also celebrating because they have all but locked an appearance into a Bowl game for the 2nd time in 3 years.
The Hoosiers, who won last night 38-21 over the Purdue Boilermakers, haven't won a bowl game since 1991 They appeared in 1993 Independence Bowl against the Virginia Tech Hokies, but lost the game 45-20. They also appeared in the 2007 Insight Bowl against the Oklahoma State Cowboys, but lost that game 49-33.
Even though in recent times the Hoosiers have struggled in football, they were a regular in Bowl games in the late 80s and early 90s. From 1985 until 1991, they appeared in 5 bowl games, winning two of them. They shut out Baylor 24-0 in the 1991 Copper Bowl, and crushed South Carolina 34-10 in the 1988 Liberty Bowl. They are 3-6 overall in bowl games.
"We were a powerhouse in the late 1980s, and I want to return the Hoosiers to their past dominance," coach Anthony Thompson told us at his post-game press conference. "Starting with a bowl win this year, we will work our way back up the college football standings until we are considered one of the best teams in the country, just like we used to be."
"I am sick and tired of losing. I want to win." The inspirational words of Ike Mayberry. "We've been pushed around by better teams for 20 years, and I think it's time that we fought back. We are going to catch other teams by surprise and beat the hell out of them."
The Hoosiers won't be playing another game for 3 weeks, so we can only hope that they will be ready to play when it's time for their Bowl Game.
