Enough is enough. Peyton Manning is the greatest QB of all time.
Brett's not that high. Too many playoff mistakes for GOAT discussion.
I'll still stand by having him at 2 or 3 on the list. Brett, like Peyton and Brady, have all made a few playoff mistakes that took their team out of the game but the team would never have been in the game without them under center in the first place. One interesting factoid....we should have known that the Saints were going to win tonight because Brett has never lost an NFC championship game to a team that didn't win the Superbowl ('95 Cowboys, '07 Giants and now the '09 Saints).
Like I said before, Peyton is great, likely top 3, but he is in no way the greatest of all time. Montana always played his best in the biggest games, which is something Manning has yet to show. Manning may have a championship and will probably have every regular season record in the book, but Montana is still the QB anyone would take if they had to win the Super Bowl.
I feel Manning would have easliy won 4 SB's with those Walsh teams, and probably more. He'd have no problems throwing those short slants and swing passes out of the backfield all day.
Some of those 49er teams also had fierce defenses, something Manning has never benefited from. The Colts have had defenses ranging from statistically ok (but never feared), to outright bad. They had years where they were among the easiest teams to run against in the league, yet Manning single handedly made them SB contenders by intentionally stalling drives to keep his D off the field.
I'd be shocked if he didnt win at least one more title before he's done.
PM's the best field general in the NFL, with Brady Brees and Favre CLOSE behind. He sure got showed up in the Super Bowl...what a great game!
Showed up? How is that? He played pretty fucking well outside of one throw, he didn't even get to touch the ball for an entire quarter, and then the onside kick thing robbed him of another drive.
But there's no way in hell he's the best ever. I'd take Elway, Montana, Moon, and Blanda over Manning any day.

The Greatest of All-Time does NOT choke in the Super Bowl.
That is an automatic disqualifier.
You can be #2-through-infinity, but, you can not be number one.

But... he wasn't on those teams. You could say the same thing about Tom Brady too.. and not to sound like a raging Favre lover, but I'm sure Favre would have done pretty damn good with those stacked Niners teams that Montana won on.
If we're doing what-if scenarios, I'm sure Marino would have liked to have a Terrell Davis like Elway did. Or a Marshall Faulk like Warner had. Or the 2000 Ravens D. Etc, etc.
Given what we KNOW.. and given what we have SEEN.. Peyton Manning has 1 championship and Joe Montana has 4.
Until Manning wins another, this cannot even be a realistic discussion right now. Hell Brady was a dropped Asante Samuel pick away from having BOTH 4 rings and a perfect season under his belt. And even then, we can't anoint him the GOAT yet.

Is that why Manning's losses have mostly been because of the offense scoring much less than expected? They came out against a so-so defense and only were able to put up 17 points, while giving up 7 on an interception. Their defense held the amazing Saints offense to 24, which is by no means bad. Manning should have been able to put on a show, but I guess it was his defense's fault that they could only put up a +10 point differential when the Colts had the ball.
The Colts' defense constantly gets ragged on, but without it, Manning wouldn't have his only ring. The defense got Peyton to the Super Bowl and helped him win it. He was awful that post-season.
As for the 49ers comparison, I would love to see what numbers Montana would be able to put up in Manning's system where players cannot be touched 5 yards past the line and the offense is given nearly every advantage. Montana would have easily put up better post-season numbers than Manning... oh wait... he did that already without all those benefits.
Blanda, in his prime, could do it ALL. I mean seriously. He was comeback kid, held records, and could kick and play defense. I'd love to see Peyton kick a field goal.
In their primes, I'd take them all over PM.

Just... no.

Manning's performance last night really dropped him down a notch or two in my mind. That pick he threw was just awful. Joe Montana would have never thrown that pass. Not to mention, Manning's playoff record and stats are not that great, either.
He will finish his career as the best regular season QB of all time, but when it comes to the playoffs, he can't hold a candle to Joe.

I think I heard that Manning is 9-9 in the playoffs after last night. Manning had a chance to move up on the GOAT list but after last night, I don't think you can argue that he is any better than Favre, who has just as many championships and a better playoff record. Somewhere around 3rd-5th on the list.
Montana is still the gold standard by which all other QB's in the postseason should be judged.

I would put Manning ahead of Favre but I wouldn't argue with anyone who disagreed with me until Manning wins another one.
The only problem I have with Favre is that in 19 seasons he only won 1 ring and without Desmond Howard he probably never gets that ring.
