Olympic Wrestler Ben Askren in Talks with Strikeforce
By Steven Kelliher on October 10, 2009
Former University of Missouri wrestler Ben Askren (3-0 MMA), one of the most talked about young prospects in the welterweight division, said today that his management has been in talks with the California-based Strikeforce promotion. Askren disclosed the talks today in a conversation with Tapology’s Steven Kelliher. While Askren could not confirm if the two sides have reached a verbal agreement yet, he expressed his expectation to fight in December or January either for Strikeforce or another promotion.
Should the 2x NCAA National Wrestling Champion sign with Strikeforce, he would become the latest blue chip wrestling prospect scooped up by Scott Coker’s organization. Such signings could turn into a solid division-building strategy, demonstrating continued interest by the amicable promoter to look beyond former UFC competitors and other established MMA veterans. Askren has reportedly been training at American Kickboxing Academy as well as Arizona Combat Sports in preparation for his next bout.Liquidrob's Top 10 Fighters Rankings

Heavyweights Junior Dos Santos and Gabriel Gonzaga are expected to meet at UFC 108 on Jan. 2 in Las Vegas.
Multiple sources on Monday told MMAWeekly.com that the fight has been agreed to and contracts are expected to be signed shortly. Fiveknuckles.com was first to report the pairing on Sunday. The bout has yet to be officially announced by the UFC.
Sources tell MMAWeekly.com that the match-up is expected to groom the next contender for the heavyweight title.
Dos Santos (10-1) last month emerged from a starmaking turn against Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic at UFC 103 in Dallas. The 25-year-old Brazilian battered Filipovic with a crisp striking attack that caused the former Pride champion to quit with three minutes left in the 15-minute bout. It was his second upset victory since taking to the Octagon at UFC 90, where he knocked out the highly touted Fabricio Werdum in the first round.
Gonzaga (15-4) is coming off a controversial victory over UFC newcomer Chris Tuchscherer at UFC 102. After an inadvertent low kick struck Tuchscherer in the groin, causing him to briefly lose consciousness, the bout's continuance was placed in jeopardy. Tuchscherer was able to continue after the referee halted the bout, but was unable to stop Gonzaga's relentless attack after the fight was restarted. He succumbed to punches midway through the first round.
The 30-year-old Gonzaga has oft stated a desire for a second shot at the heavyweight title after falling short to then-champion Randy Couture at UFC 74. His Octagon record stands at 7-3.Comment

RUMOR
nothing credible to it but rumor none the less
Fiveouncesofpain.com appears to have the scoop on this potential slugfest:
A slugfest between Kimbo Slice and Houston Alexander is looking like a strong possibility for UFC 107.
A source close to the situation advised FiveOuncesofPain.com today that although no bout agreements have been sent, at least one of the fighters has been formally approached about the possibility of the bout.
UFC 107 is scheduled for December 12 from Memphis, Tennessee, and will feature a headlining lightweight championship bout between B.J. Penn and Diego Sanchez.
Kimbo would be coming off of the heels of his appearance on “The Ultimate Fighter: Heavyweights“, and his recent TUF 10 loss at the hands (and moon-sized belly) of Roy “Big Country” Nelson. Prior to his stint at the TUF house Kimbo suffered a lightning quick TKO defeat to Seth Petruzelli after racking up wins over guys like Tank Abbott and James “Colossus” Thompson.
Alexander recently bounced back into the winners circle with a first round TKO over Sherman Pendergarst during Adrenaline IV in September, following three consecutive defeats with the UFC.

More Rumor Stuff
Chuck Liddell talks to Sherdog about whether or not we'll see him back in the cage, when, and who he'd fight in a come back fight:
“I still love fighting. I don’t know what we’re going to come up with. I’m going to start spending a lot of time training guys or get back in there - one of the two. I needed some time off. “Dancing” actually gave me something to concentrate on and get in shape on. I just want to get back in shape and stay in shape and start training with people and see what I want to do. [And] why would anyone even want to see me fight Kimbo? I have no interest in that fight. Whatever. It is what it is. I guess I’d do it, if that’s who I had to fight to come back.”

Duffee out of UFC 107; Struve, Russow Possible Opponents for Buentello
Todd Duffee has pulled out of his heavyweight bout against Paul Buentello at UFC 107 on Dec. 12 in Memphis, Tenn., due to an injury.
“(Withdrawing) was one of the hardest decisions I’ve had to make,” said Duffee, who would not disclose the nature of his injury.
Duffee, 23, burst onto the UFC scene with a record-setting seven-second knockout of Tim Hague at UFC 102 in August. The undefeated heavyweight, who recently relocated to Las Vegas to attend the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, hopes to be back in action by early 2010.
“It was a fight I was really looking forward to,” Buentello told Sherdog.com on Tuesday. “We really matched up well.”
Mike Russow and Stefan Struve have been presented as two potential replacements for Duffee, said Buentello.
Buentello will make his UFC return on Dec. 12 after nearly four years away from the Octagon. The 35-year-old heavyweight has rattled off an impressive 12-2 record over the past six years with his only defeats coming in title matches against Andrei Arlovski (in the UFC) and Alistair Overeem (in Strikeforce.)
Russow, 33, earned a unanimous decision victory over Justin McCully in his UFC debut in August. Russow, a Chicago police officer by day, has tallied 12 wins in 13 professional bouts.
The 21-year-old Struve has shown quite a bit of promise in his young MMA career. The towering 6-foot-11 Dutchman submitted Chase Gormley with a first-round triangle choke at UFC 104 on Oct. 24 to earn “Submission of the Night” honors by the promotion.Last edited by CrimsonGhost56; 11-03-2009, 09:06 PM.Comment
