When you are about ready to go through two managers in two years, that logic goes out the door. You also underestimate the amount of money they now have to do whatever they want with it. That could be 3-4 players just this off-season.
And last year is a terrible example for you to use in defense of keeping that team together. The lack of leadership from many at the top lead to that collapse, and ultimately led to this.
Again, I fail to see the net gain of trading away all of this money only to spend it again on more long term contracts. Player salaries are inflating rapidly. Look at what Votto, Pujols and Fielder got compared to Gonzalez.
