When you are about ready to go through two managers in two years, that logic goes out the door. You also underestimate the amount of money they now have to do whatever they want with it. That could be 3-4 players just this off-season.

And last year is a terrible example for you to use in defense of keeping that team together. The lack of leadership from many at the top lead to that collapse, and ultimately led to this.

Again, I fail to see the net gain of trading away all of this money only to spend it again on more long term contracts. Player salaries are inflating rapidly. Look at what Votto, Pujols and Fielder got compared to Gonzalez.

Check your facts. Beckett is making 17 million a year. Your salary estimate is 10 million off. I don't buy the clubhouse cancer bull shit. Plenty of teams have won in the past without a great clubhouse atmosphere. That's an excuse. The Red Sox are overreacting to one bad injury plagued year which is borderline retarded. Beckett will be fine, especially moving to the NL West and that ballpark.


So the Red Sox plan is to trade some bad contracts so they can make some more bad contracts? One bad, injury plagued year? We're ignoring 2010 then? Are we also going to ignore that he didn't make it to 200 innings last year? Generally, 15+ million a season is supposed to get you 200+ innings. So, basically, 1 out of the last 3 years, he's been good. The other two he's been unable to stay off the DL, unable to get batters out, and generally hated by fans in no small part because of a 5+ ERA. Oh and he's 32.

I would hope Beckett does better. He'd have to. He really can't do much worse.

I have no idea what the Red Sox' future plans are, but the one they had was becoming a messy, coat hanger abortion. The Dodgers clearly made this trade to get Adrian Gonazalez. If Crawford ends up returning to form, then it might be worth it. But they're locked in to 9 players for 144 million next season already. I'm expecting them to make some interesting trades this offseason.

Usually when a team trades for a player in August, they pay a month of his salary for the year, not all of it. The Klaw article above says the Dodgers will only pay 31.5 for Beckett. Durp durp!

Mark White, the Dodgers' real owner, said something like "I'd rather overpay to field a competitive team now, than be leery of spending money now and be mediocre." I think that falls into line with Stan Kasten's mission of "Buy bats, grow arms." Ownership is doing all the right things to put together a solid team. It's up to the players now to deliver.

Makes sense for both sides. Hopefully Crawford hasn't lost TOO much speed when he comes back, if he and Gordon are atop the lineup getting on base at semi solid rates the lineup is going to be scary. I dont have much hope for Dee though.

There are other ways to reinvest the money. The farm system needs some more work. They may not have to spend that money all on long-term contracts, either.

This is more for getting the bad apples out of there than anything else. The bonus is that they cleared $290 million along with it.

Crawford lost his speed before this season started, so good luck with him staying on as that "prolific base stealer" as he spends even more time away from the game. As the legs go, he goes, in my opinion.

As to the trade as a whole, I'm really confused with Gooby's approach to this. Yes I understand it was "just one year," but you continue to harp on the fact that this team was a World Series contender PRE 2011. How it was good up until September of last year. You somehow are convinced that this team could bounce back next year, with a core that hasn't won a playoff game since 2008, and magically regain their "world series potential."

I simply don't see it. As great of a hitter that Gonzalez is, and it will suck to see him go, this core was simply an underachieving bunch that withered away in the face of the Boston media, whether it was completely their doing or not. When you have the ability to unload a mockery of a contract in Carl Crawford, and get rid of an underperforming,egotistical veteran starter, you have to do it. It's Ben Cherington's chance to start fresh.

You continue to harp on Cherington for making such terrible moves and generally implying this is all his fault, yet I couldn't disagree more. This trade for Cherington is a chance to free himself from the restrictions of HORRENDOUS financial obligations which hung over his head before he even assumed the job. He freed up 260 million dollars, all while receiving a top 5 prospect on the verge of staying in the MLB (rubby) and another strong arm in Webster. This gives him a ridiculous amount of payroll flexibility to expedite the "rebuilding" process however he chooses. I fully believe that the Red Sox will field a competitive team in 2013, because they have the ability to bring in new talent whether it's through a weak free agent class or by trade.

Does it suck to lose a player like Adrian Gonzalez? Yes. Am I broken up over the fact we lost him? Not in the slightest. The core players were never going to win a World Series in Boston, and at least they now have the chance to at least begin to fix that.
