Also ran across this list. 400 yard passing games went up and down by year. While last year was high, it certainly wasn't unprecedented.

It dropped in 2010 because guys like Roethlisberger, Rodgers, Favre, etc. missed a couple games due to suspension/injury/retirement.

And I don't know why you would be shocked to see a 5000 yard passer in 2011 when Matt fricken Schaub nearly threw for 5000 yards in 2009.

The NFL has become a passing league, I'm not arguing that. All I am questioning is WTB's point that supposed "below average" quarterbacks will be putting up 300-400 yards a game and top tier QB's will be setting NFL records left and right this season by basing that on what he saw week 1 of this year.

For a QB to throw for 5,000 yards you would have to average 312.5 yards a game. In the last 5 years, only 2 QB's have averaged over 300 yards a game, Brees in 08 and Brady in 07.

I looked at the last 30+ years, here's what I saw.

The last year we had without a 4,000 yard passer was 1997. However, except for the 1987 and 1982 strike shortened seasons, the last year before that was 1978.

In 2009 we had a high of 10 4,000 yard passers. Here's the list:

Matt Schaub
Peyton Manning
Tony Romo
Aaron Rodgers
Tom Brady
Drew Brees
Big Ben
Phillip Rivers
Brett Favre
Eli Manning

In 2010 it dropped to 5, which is the lowest since 2006.

To answer your question, yes, I would be shocked to see another 5,000 yard passer this year. I would be shocked if I saw a repeat of 09 and had 10 4,000 yard passers. I would need to see another couple weeks like this one to start comparing the NFL to the Arena league.

To kinda put an answer to that line. Those 10 could of very well done it again if it wasn't for injuries and a dude raping a chick.

Avg. yards thrown a game is the stat you should be looking at.

So, in the last 5 years, one QB threw for over 5000 yards and another just missed. So why would you be shocked if someone threw for over 5000 yards this year?

It would be like saying "I would be shocked if we saw a 63-yard field goal this year...the last time that happened was last week."

I'm shocked at anything that I don't see on a normal basis, so I guess I'm easily impressed.

And I would be shocked if I saw a 63 yard FG this week...

I got poo poo'd last year saying someone would break the passing yards mark or come close..heck, 2 guys may do it this year, and they wont need a winning record either..Brady could have 1,800 by the end of the first four weeks

Back to Cam for a sec - it was a great debut. He impressed me picking up on the blitz as well as he did. Truth told he could've passed for 500 the way Arizona was selling out every play because about a dozen times they either got to him too fast and/or he took off without looking. Had he been able to ID his hot receiver on some of those they would've had all day to run. When he got the ball out of his hands he was far more accurate than anyone expected. And we already knew he had a cannon for an arm. Watching him hit his TEs on those 10-15 out routes was very nice - delivered on time, on target and with plenty of zip. I'm curious to see how he does when teams start mixing in more stunts against him and dropping some of those LBs that look like they're blitzing. This week against Green Bay should be real interesting.

As for the league as a whole, it's definitely a passing league now. Still, I was a bit surprised by all the passing yards because when camps, practice time, etc are shortened the defenses tend to be ahead of the offenses at every level of football. So I foolishly expected to see a lot less scoring this week, maybe even the first few weeks and then picking up after that. Guess that old adage doesn't apply anymore.

Very impressive debut. Lucked out when I accidentally started him over Fitzpatrick in my two-QB fantasy league (not that Fitzpatrick was predicted to have the game he did). It goes without saying that he won't do as well against Green Bay, but hopefully he doesn't completely implode. I don't find Jacksonville particularly threatening...

Before the bye, he has seven more games, so by the half-point of the season he'll have played teams that were ranked in pass defense last year:
5, 28, 20, 4, 22, 31, and 9 (overall d: 5, 28, 9, 4, 16, 31, and 8)

By then the season will obviously have panned-out more, and we'll clearly have a better read on where everything and everyone is going. Different defenses will have different game plans, but I don't think he's going to be the worst quarterback in the league for every game here on out. I think he'll have a good rookie season. We'll just have to wait and see, though... You really learn so little from season-openers.

Two of those interceptions were excellent plays by the defender, one on a slight overthrow. The one to Woodson was just a bad decision. Cam is fucking legit. Playcalling sucked today, no commitment to the run whatsoever is going to hurt a rookie QB especially against the Packers defense. THREE times they reached inside the 2=3 yard line and came away with FG's instead of TD's... The Panthers outplayed the Packers, they are legit... or the Packers aren't as good as everybody says they are...

I'm inclined to agree at this point. Still early in his career to say for sure, but as I said before, I'm on the Cam Newton bandwagon, being that I have him starting on two of my fantasy football teams.
