Rock Bottom (Part 2)

"I'm leaving."

"What!?"

"Calm down, calm down."

"But why?"

"Hun, you didn't even let me finish."

"First I fuck up in the game, now this?"

"Ethan!"

"What?"

"My uncle is sick and I'm going down to Hilton Head for two weeks to be with him. That's all."

"So you're not leaving this failure then?"

"Forget about the game Ethan, there'll be others."

"Easier said then done."

"What's with your attitude lately? You don't seem like yourself."

She was right, I didn't feel like myself. In addition to feeling like a failure, I was started to wonder if I was ever going to be myself again; you know, the one that goes out with many girls and doesn't give a fuck what happens. I knew I loved Melyssa, I just didn't know if I wanted to be with her.

"It's just football babe. It's got me stressed and I just feel like I can't be a normal college student, especially when I go right into basketball after the season's over."

"So you want to feel normal again? What do you expect? You were brought in to be the savior of this program. You're not going to be a normal kid on campus, no matter how hard you try."

"Anyways, I got to go. My plane leaves in a few hours. I'll call you while I'm down there, okay?"

We made our way to the parking lot, giving each other "goodbye" kisses and driving off in different directions. I didn't want to go to my dorm and face Delone, so I made my way over to Troy's apartment.

*KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK*

"Yo, what are you doing here Ethan? Sorry about the game, by the way."

"That's basically the main reason why I'm here. Anyway I can crash here for a while?"

"Sure, be my guest. I'm actually leaving here now to go to the airport."

"Yeah, Mel told me. Tell your uncle he's in my prayers as well."

"Thanks Ethan. Umm, just don't trash the place too much, alright?"

"I gotcha Troy, thanks."

"No problem, anytime."

As soon as I saw that he pulled out, I quickly threw on a dark blue hoodie, flat billed Titans hat, and aviator shades and made my way out the door. I got into my car and drove off to the nearest alcohol distributor, hoping that I wouldn't be noticed.

I got out of my car and nervously made my way inside. The man behind the counter was a older dude, flicking through channels to see college football's game of the night. He waved at me, and I returned that wave as I made my way over to the rum and liquor section.

"Jack Daniels...check. Captain Morgan...check. Bacardi...check."

I went to the counter, carrying the three cases of alcohol in both hands. He looked at me, like he could tell I was underage. I gulped as I set the cases onto the counter.

"I.D. please."

I reached into my pocket and pulled out my fake. Handing it to him, I was ready to run out the door when he said.

"Okay, Chad Murray. Here's your receipt and you're good to go. Have a nice night."

Whew, it worked.

"Thank you and you too."

As the sky grew darker, I made my way back to the car, carrying the medicine for my depression. I placed it in the trunk of the car and drove off, trying to get back to Troy's apartment as fast as I could.

Finally arriving at his apartment, I opened the door and set the cases beside the recliner. I turned on the television and changed it right to ESPN. Lee Corso and Kirk Herbstreit were talking about the games, as I unscrewed the cap to a Jack Daniels bottle.

"Behind Tim Tebow's 247 yards passing and three touchdowns, the Florida Gators kept their number one ranking intact, defeating LSU by the score of 24-14."

I wasn't paying much attention to Lee and Kirk, but rather I was more focused on how quickly I could get this liquor down. Shot after shot, my vision and focus began to get more hazy. After the first round of shots however, I could still understand a little what Lee and Kirk were saying.

"And now let's get to an important Big East matchup, Syracuse and West Virginia."

I could tell that they were mentioning our game as I downed another shot.

"Both teams are in the middle of the Big East race, but needed some help today."

Another sentence from Kirk, another shot going through my esophagus.

"Here's some highlights. First quarter, Jarrett Brown pitches to his back Noel Devine on this option play and he's in the endzone, making it 7-0 West Virginia."

Another shot down, and I'm starting to get a little delusional.

"However, Syracuse got on the board with their first drive in the second quarter. The senior captain, Delone Carter, took the handoff from former Duke point guard Greg Paulus and made his way into the endzone, tying it up."

"Yeah, that's my boy!"

"Two field goals were tacked on by the Mountaineers kicker, giving WVU a 13-7 advantage late in the game. That's when Syracuse started to drive down the field, when the game came down to one play."

"Trips left, Woy split out to the right. Looks like double coverage on him...and here's the snap! Paulus stares down Woy, and fires....it's in his hands...and oh no! The hit caused Woy to drop it, another tough loss for Syracuse. The final score from the Carrier Dome is West Virginia 13, Syracuse 7."

By now I'm completely out of it as I'm hitting near 20s in shots taken. I threw the remote at the television like I was a fan of the Syracuse team, and not a player.

"What the fuck was that Woy? I would have caught that pass! Shit, I got a fucking headache."

I stumbled over to the medicine counter, finding a bottle of Excedrin. I popped five pills in my mouth and washed them down with another shot of Jack. Then I stumbled over to the mirror, continuing my tirade. I pointed at my reflection and started yelling.

"You're a fucking failure! Do you know that? You don't deserve any of this shit handed to you. You didn't deserve that money from Michigan, you didn't deserve that State title, and you sure as hell didn't deserve Melyssa!"

Suddenly, my vision faded in and out, and I was seeing even more and more black. Delusional thoughts started to run through my mind...

Right before blacking out, I felt my phone vibrate. I could barely make out what the text said.

"hey hun, we made it on our flight fine. hope you're feeling better. love you."

I started to type my reply when I passed out.

"No, I just got a bad feeling something happened to Ethan..."

"I have a man, about six foot three, passed out in an apartment. I don't feel a pulse, hurry up!"
