My Guardian Angel
"He's not responding! Someone get me the defibrillator!"
"Here you go!"
"Okay, one...two...three!"
*BUZZ*
"Still no pulse! Again, one...two...three!"
"Oh thank God, we got a pulse gentlemen! Let's keep him alive..."
...
Slowly, I opened my eyes to see a blonde in front of me. I went to speak, but she put my hand over my mouth.
"Don't speak. You'll waste too much energy."
She found a space on my bed and sat down.
"I'm so glad you're alive right now. The medics said they lost you twice. Guess there is someone up there looking after you."
I continued to stare at her, wondering why she was here.
"Ethan, I know you. You might not think so, but I think I have you figured out. You love winning, maybe more than your friends, your family and your girlfriend. Whenever something like that happens, in the West Virginia game, you feel like you made it to the top Mount Everest and then got pushed off and fell to the bottom."
I didn't know what I loved more; winning or Melyssa, but she was on target with everything else.
"When I saw you laying there after the game, I knew something bad was going to happen. I didn't know what you were going to do to yourself, I just knew you'd do something. So I followed you. I followed you out to your girlfriend's house, your friend's house, and even to the alcohol distributor."
I raised a brow at what she was saying. She knew I was depressed and was planning on killing myself?
"When I saw you walk out with those cases of liquor and rum, I very well could have gotten out of my car and told you to stop. In fact, I should have tried to do that. I should have tried to save you from this mess. But I figured you were tuned out from your surronding and didn't want any part of talking to me. Especially after the last tutoring session we had, I felt like you didn't want me in your life."
I want you in my life, but I can't get a read on you. I don't want to screw things up with Melyssa, but I don't want to forget about you either.
"So when you pulled up to your friend's apartment, I just sat there and waited. I had a feeling you were going to drink till you passed out, but I didn't want to step in and piss you off. I looked through the one window and saw you screaming at yourself in the mirror. That's when I knew I had to do something. I ran upstairs and as soon as I made it up there, you were laying on the floor. Immediately, I called 911 cause I could tell this wasn't just a regular 'I passed out at a party' type incident."
A smile creeped across my face, cause I knew without her, I'd be laying in a casket right now.
"The local news is going crazy, everyone's wondering where you're at, and your coach already suspended you for next week's game. And on top of that, the medics have you placed on suicide watch, so I have no clue when you'll get out of here."
Great, probably strike two. Maybe Rodney has a heart.
"Anyways, I'm leaving. I just to make sure you're alright and tell you who saved your life."
As she got up to leave, I used a lot of my strength to reach my arm out - signaling I had something to say.
"Wait."
She turned around, surprised I had enough energy to talk.
"Don't spend too much energy, you need your sleep."
"Thank you Britt...for everything."
She walked back and gripped my hand, looking me right in the eyes.
"You're welcome. If you ever need someone, I'm here. Now get some rest."
She let go of my hand and slowly made her way out the door. Some Red Jumpsuit Apparatus started playing on the radio, as I was trying to keep my eyes open.
"...I will never let you fall. I'll stand up with you forever. I'll be there for you through it all. Even if saving you sends me to heaven..."
As I started drifting into a calming sleep, I thought to myself, "maybe Britt is my guardian angel."
