Bench may be biggest hurdle in Iverson-to-Clips deal

LAS VEGAS -- Yes, the Los Angeles Clippers are having talks with Allen Iverson. But a signing does not appear imminent, because Iverson is still chafing at the idea of coming off the bench.

Sources confirmed the Los Angeles Times' report that the team has offered Iverson a one-year deal at the mid-level exception of $5.8 million for next season. But, those sources said, Iverson remains reluctant to take a reserve role, which would be behind incumbent Baron Davis at the point or Eric Gordon at the two, just as he chafed in Detroit this past season playing behind Rip Hamilton. Even though Iverson would like to play in a big city, or, at the least, for a contending team, he's given no indication yet that he'd be any more willing to be a bench player in Los Angeles than he would be elsewhere.

One source with knowledge of the team's intentions said that Iverson was not the only player the Clippers were approaching. They also spoke with representatives for Milwaukee guard Ramon Sessions, as well as Indiana's Jarrett Jack, before Jack signed an offer sheet with the Toronto Raptors, in their pursuit of a backup point. Another source said that Coach Mike Dunleavy needed some assurances from Iverson's camp that he could accept a reserve role before getting completely behind the pursuit of Iverson.

In the interim, Iverson is still being pursued by Miami, Memphis and Charlotte.

However, the Clippers do remain a strong possibility for Iverson. Los Angeles could provide all kinds of ancillary income opportunities for Iverson. And the Clippers could have significant room under the cap after this season, which would give Iverson a chance to recoup some income if he were to accept the one-year offer at the mid-level.​

Clippers want direct meeting

A.I. doens't want to come off the bench.

Before they commit to Allen Iverson for one year, the Los Angeles Clippers want to look him in the eye and ask him about coming off the bench.

Iverson's answer, if the meeting happens, will go a long way toward determining whether "The Answer" will land in Los Angeles for a one-year contract for the midlevel exception of $5.8 million.

Sources told ESPN.com Tuesday that Iverson's agent, Leon Rose, was traveling to Las Vegas to arrange a meeting with the Clippers as the next step in the process of finding a new home for Iverson, the former MVP and four-time scoring champion who is an unrestricted free agent.

The Memphis Grizzlies remained the most viable fallback option for Iverson, with the Grizzlies holding the trump card -- should they choose to play it -- of being able to offer Iverson more money than the Clippers.

Also in the Iverson picture are the Miami Heat, who, like many NBA teams, are waiting this week to see how the fallout from the Paul Millsap offer-sheet signing will affect the free-agent and trade markets going forward.

Utah has until Friday to match Portland's four-year, $34 million offer sheet, and the Blazers could re-enter the market as major cap-space players -- a development that would send ripple effects throughout the league, affecting Lamar Odom, Carlos Boozer and others -- if Utah decides to match.

Memphis is eager to add Iverson for his box-office appeal in a city where the franchise has struggled to tap into the community fan base, though Grizzlies owner Michael Heisley has said he believes Miami is the favorite to end up with Iverson.

As for the Clippers, two sources said one major potential obstacle is whether Iverson would accept a role coming off the bench, and whether the Clippers are convinced he could be effective in a three-guard alignment with starters Baron Davis and Eric Gordon.

But the Clippers' relative lack of depth in the backcourt would offer Iverson additional minutes, and the allure of playing in a large market is a factor that favors both Los Angeles and Miami over Memphis.

One source indicated the Clippers' ongoing efforts to trade Chris Kaman were tangentially impacting their plans, and a second source said Los Angeles -- which tried to acquire Indiana's Jarrett Jack before he signed an offer sheet Monday with Toronto -- also continues to have a strong interest in Milwaukee restricted free-agent point guard Ramon Sessions.

If the Clippers were to exit the Iverson derby, Memphis would be able to outspend Iverson's other main suitor, the Charlotte Bobcats, whose financial flexibility in going after Iverson is restricted by luxury tax concerns.​

May To Sign With Clippers?

Sean May told the Charlotte Observer on Monday night that he has plans to work out for four teams in Las Vegas this week.

May became an unrestricted free agent after the Bobcats opted not to extend him a $3.6 million qualifying offer.

He told the Observer that he would work out for the Blazers and Kings on Tuesday, Cavaliers on Wednesday and Clippers on Thursday.

The Bobcats haven't completely ruled out re-signing him either.

The Clippers' second Las Vegas Summer League game didn’t have quite the sizzle that a game one victory over the Lakers had, but they are nonetheless 2-0 for the summer after a hard-fought 88-86 win over the New Orleans Hornets at the Thomas and Mack Arena Tuesday night.

Three young Clippers again had big games: Blake Griffin (16 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists), DeAndre Jordan (21 Points, 12 rebounds, 3 blocks) and guard Eric Gordon (22 points, 10-10 FTM-A). It is also worth noting that young Kyle McAlarney from Notre Dame sparked a late surge with seven fourth quarter points with the game on the line.

The young Clippers club was plagued with turnovers all night long, giving up the ball 21 times in a 40 minute game. When the game was over, I asked Head Coach and General Manager Mike Dunleavy what he thought and he quickly responded, "I like Blake Griffin."

And what’s not to like? The 20-year-old power forward from Oklahoma has knocked down 18-of-26 shots in his two Summer League games. The Clippers are now one of the three of the 22 teams in Vegas to remain unbeaten.

Griffin is clearly the Summer League’s number one attraction. The team has brought in extra security to help him deal with sometimes overzealous fans who just want a maybe a glimpse, a touch or perhaps an autograph. Everywhere I go in the city, after people notice the Clipper logo on my shirt, the questions have a common theme and that’s Blake Griffin.

Game three is set for Thursday night, with the Clippers and Grizzlies in the feature game at 7:30 pm (PDT). ​

Mike Dunleavy confirms team's interest in Allen Iverson

Dunleavy, who was watching games from the stands at the NBA's Summer League, on Tuesday confirmed the Clippers' interest in the free-agent guard but refused to elaborate on any future steps.

Their meeting probably won't take place in Las Vegas.

Though talks have been characterized as "very serious," there are outstanding issues on both sides. The Clippers still have other options, as does Iverson.

Iverson's other reported suitors are Miami and Memphis, although the latter appears to be mainly driven by the Grizzlies' owner, who called it a last-resort option for Iverson.

The Clippers' Baron Davis, who is in China, was said to be on board with adding Iverson and confirmed that with his posting on his Twitter page Tuesday: "Everybody's been askin about the AI talks. I LOVE AI. He is TOP 50. I remember watching A.I. when he was at GTown (Georgetown) & when he first got in the league he would be a great vet for our young guys to learn from."

The Iverson talks, which surfaced Monday, have vociferous backers and equally outspoken opponents. One question has been about the allocation of minutes between the three guards: Davis, Iverson and young Eric Gordon, who is coming off a sensational rookie season.

That is not thought to be a concern for the Clippers, who appear to believe the strengths of the three players would mesh, not clash.​

This is officially an "off day" for the Clippers' Las Vegas Summer League team; however, they will stay hard at work, meeting for a mid-day practice at Thomas & Mack Center on the campus of UNLV.

The Clippers' "G-Men" - rookie Blake Griffin and second year guard Eric Gordon - will get a full dose of the dry desert heat this month. They will stay on the Vegas strip well after their week of work for the Clippers during the Summer League. Each has been chosen to participate on the USA Select team that will be working out here from July 22-25. Griffin, Gordon and 23 other young pros will be participating in the 2009 USA Basketball Men’s National Team mini-camp. It’s a worthy honor and both are looking forward to it.

First things first, though. The Clips still have three games to play during the sixth Summer League to be played in Las Vegas. Their record is 2-0 with Memphis up next on Thursday night.

I’ll heading back to Oregon later today. It’s been a worthwhile few days here in Vegas. I was fortunate to see two games and two full practices. It’s an impressive group that Head Coach and General Manager Mike Dunleavy and Assistant General Manager Neil Olshey have put together. They’ve all worked hard under the guidance of summer league coach Kim Hughes and Assistants Tony Brown and Fred Vinson. We wish them well the rest of the way.​

I’ve escaped the heat of Las Vegas for the cooler banks of the Deschutes River in Central Oregon. A few observations after four days at the very well-run Las Vegas Summer League: Warren LeGarie and his staff are to be congratulated on the job they’ve done in making this the premier NBA event of the summer. They started in Las Vegas in 2004 with only six teams in tow. It’s grown to 22 teams while summer events in Long Beach and the Rocky Mountain Review in Utah have fallen to the wayside. Two side-by-side gyms on the campus of UNLV buzz with basketball activity for 10-straight days. Coaches, general managers, scouts, team owners and international basketball execs devour hours of hoops each day. It is a very special off-season adventure.

It was quickly obvious that Blake Griffin is the marquee player in the event this year. He’s an absolute sensation and the biggest star to hit the Summer League since its Las Vegas inception. He is the reason that the Clippers are the prime time game at the bigger Thomas & Mack Center each night. Fans from all over the country are clamoring to see the former Oklahoma star play. He’s going to be a real star in this league and a hugely popular player in Los Angeles.

I also enjoyed seeing a collection of former Clipper players competing in the Summer League. Shaun Livingston, not yet 24 years old, is continuing his come back attempt with the Oklahoma City Thunder. His contract for the 2009-10 season is not guaranteed so he’s using this event to show he can regain sufficient form to back-up young Russell Westbrook at the point in Oklahoma. He shows flashes of his once promising skills, but still lacks the explosive moves stolen from him by that tragic knee injury in February of 2007. We wish Shaun the best of luck. Other former Clippers spotted on summer league rosters include Luke Jackson with Dallas, Will Conroy with Houston, Daniel Ewing with Memphis, Paul Davis with Toronto and Yaroslav Korolev with the New York Knicks.

The Clippers return to Action tonight in the feature 7:30 pm (PDT) game against the Memphis Grizzlies. ​

I've confirmed the Clippers interest in Allen Iverson is mutual, but it's hard to say who is more into who. lverson clearly needs a job and isn't hurt at all by his name being linked to several franchises: Miami, Memphis and now the Clippers.

The Clippers are intrigued by the idea, but I'm told by a team source they are intrigued by several players right now. On the wish list before next season is adding another big (to replace Brian Skinner) and another perimeter player. The team still has it's MLE, it's bi-annual exception, veteran minimums and a $7.3 million trade exception once the Zach Randolph trade is finalized.

Which of these options it uses to sign those two players is still to be determined. Iverson fits the ``perimeter player'' job description, but the team is still formulating its plans.

Of particular concern is how adding an Iverson to the mix affects the development of shooting guard Eric Gordon, who blossomed in the second half of last season.​

Total package: Clippers' Griffin has combo of speed, power

Ever the perfectionist, Griffin doesn't fully agree with Dunleavy's assessment that he's playing great. Griffin gave himself a "B-minus" in his debut Monday, despite the 27 points and 12 rebounds. In that 93-82 win against the Los Angeles Lakers, Griffin said he forgot some plays and believed he could have done better defensively.

After he scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds in an 88-86 win Tuesday against the New Orleans Hornets, Griffin declined to grade himself. He said he did better remembering plays and on defense but wasn't pleased with his energy level.

"Yeah, definitely," Griffin said when asked if he's a perfectionist. "My biggest thing is, when you have a good game, you have to minimize your mistakes. You pass the ball, you rebound the ball, you score well, you do all those things well. You don't have any holes in your game."

So far, Hughes isn't finding many holes. "What's scary about him and unique about him is he combines speed and power," Hughes said. "Not many guys do that. LeBron (James) does. (Griffin is a) 'big' that combines speed and power. He reminds me a little bit of (former ABA and NBA star) George McGinnis."

Lakers forward Adam Morrison compares Griffin, who is listed at 6-10 but measured at 6-81/2 without shoes at the NBA draft combine, to another undersized power forward.

"He's like (Charles) Barkley in that he's a guy who's a smaller (power) forward, but he's really athletic and can put it on the floor and shoot," Morrison said.​

Wafer Interested In Los Angeles?

Recently, guard/forward Von Wafer acknowledged interest in joining the Los Angeles Clippers. In a recent post on twitter, Wafer stated the following message: "thanks for the support -- I wanted to come back but the Rockets don't want me. I will come back strong somewhere. maybe the clippers."

The Clippers have been looking at several players in free agency, including Allen Iverson, Matt Barnes, Ramon Sessions, and now Von Wafer? Wafer is an energetic player that was a big threat off the bench for the Rockets last season. Wafer averaged 9.7 ppg as well as 1.8 rpg and 1.1 apg.​
